Wonder in Godly Play
If you haven't been stopped short in a while to recognize an everyday-looking miracle, take a peek into St. Luke's Sunday School classrooms. This summer, Mary Queen and Diane Reddy discovered their shared passion about teaching in a Godly Play manner. Then, for the first time in two years, the Arizona Diocese offered an August teacher training workshop for Jerome Berryman's curriculum. Visit to learn about the Christian Education materials.
They showed up. First principle of transformation! Diane recalled an ark somewhere in a church closet. The beautifully crafted objet d'art for children's use was located and placed in a rearranged classroom. Director of Children's & Youth Ministry, Sophie Buisson, planned another classroom. The three participated in the Phoenix weekend training.
To establish the other classroom, Sophie determined the "storeroom" would have to be cleared. Another principle of transformation-make room! Here's what happened at St. Luke's on Tuesday morning after the training:
"Mon Dieu," Sophie nearly shouted from the attic to the two teachers. "I can't believe it. It's truly divine providence!"
Carefully wrapped, stored in boxes, waiting in the attic beside perfectly carpentered bookcases, were many treasured figures used in Godly Play Biblical and liturgical story telling. In awe, the Sunday Child Ministers team unpacked the legacy left by an earlier St. Luke's community of believing teachers.
Organizing and rearranging "new" Godly Play classrooms called out a sense of sacred action. Here is deep gratefulness for the opportunity to wonder and be a part of St. Luke's history of teachers.
Treat yourself. Come! Look and share the miraculous blessing from the attic above!

Funeral Reception Committees
At St. Luke's there is a small ministry, which comes under Pastoral Care, known as the Funeral Reception Committee. This ministry is made up of 2 teams of about 10 women each.  One team is in need of a new leader. These 10 women of each team bake all the cookies, set up the Parish Hall, serve at the reception and then clean up. Most of these women have been on this committee since St. Luke's moved to the present building.  It is imperative for us to have more volunteers to bake cookies and be active members on these teams. If you are interested in helping with this important ministry, please call Pat Eaton (928- 771-1821) or send her an email  (

Social Media Sunday 2016
Sunday, September 25, 2016, is officially known throughout the church community as Social Media Sunday. Our Arizona Diocese Canon for Media and Communications, Nicole Krug, has challenged us to join this fun, online, ecumenical event. How can you participate? We at St. Luke's will focus on three social media applications: Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat.  We can use these applications for things like:
  • Instagram a selfie or photo from St. Luke's
  • Snapchat a story from St. Luke's - perhaps something that touched you during the sermon or a particular reading
  • "Check in" on Facebook, and update your status by sharing something that is important to you about St. Luke's and why you attend
  • Take a photo during the Fundraising Gala - A Taste for Mission - and upload it to any of the applications
Important! Nicole has asked that we include the hashtag #SMS16 in all of our postings so that our social media participation becomes part of the worldwide conversation. This is an exciting way to be part of this ecumenical effort to share the good news about building community with social media. We also encourage you to use the hashtag #SLEC1617 as this is the hashtag we will use for St. Luke's Church. This will also help our ongoing Communications efforts to ensure that St. Luke's is engaged in the Quad Cities community. Let's make our presence and joy known!

Our Youth Group has volunteered to help those of us who are new to social media become more experienced in time for the September 25th event. They will be available after BOTH the 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. services on Sunday, September 18, in the Parish Hall, during coffee hour, to answer questions, distribute info on the social media platforms mentioned above, and to even set up accounts for you, if you so desire!
