The Episcopal Church Welcomes you!

When people visit a church the first impression is very important, so important that many visitors know for sure whether they are going to come back. I have experienced the warm welcome of this congregation when I first visited St Luke's with Sophie to be interviewed by the Search Committee and the Vestry. I have experienced it again when I moved here with my family. I have also heard so many of you sharing how well you were welcomed when you first visited St Luke's. I was so glad, and proud, and thankful, last Sunday during the Newcomers' Luncheon, to hear that the same inviting welcome was the main factor that people wanted to be part of this congregation. People who visit us experience first hand that the motto "The Episcopal Church Welcomes you" is real. There is a place here for all. All are welcome as they are! We are truly blessed to be a welcoming community!

A Prayer for Memorial Day
Almighty and everlasting God, in whom all souls live now and evermore, the God not of the dead but of the living; We bless you for all those who have faithfully lived and died in the service of their country. As we ever hold them in grateful remembrance, in your love and mercy let light perpetual shine upon them, and bring us all at last into your eternal kingdom of peace, through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.    (Anonymous)

A way to honor Chris Christy and her future ministry
On June 11, Chris Christy is going to be ordained a deacon. During the ordination service the bishop will pray for Chris with these words: "God now calls you to a special ministry of servanthood directly under your bishop. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are to serve all people, particularly the poor, the weak, the sick, and the lonely. As a deacon in the Church, you are to study the Holy Scriptures, to seek nourishment from them, and to model your life upon them. You are to make Christ and his redemptive love known, by your word and example, to those among whom you live, and work, and worship. You are to interpret to the Church the needs, concerns, and hopes of the world. You are to assist the bishop and priests in public worship and in the ministration of God's Word and Sacraments, and you are to carry out other duties assigned to you from time to time. At all times, your life and teaching are to show Christ's people that in serving the helpless they are serving Christ himself."  We rejoice about Chris' ordination and her future ministry at St Luke's and in the larger community. She will be in the midst of us, with Kimball, as a reminder of our common vocation to servanthood.

On Sunday June 12 during the reception following our 10:00 AM service, gifts will be offered to Chris, liturgical items, communion kit, etc. If you want to participate, you are invited to put in the collection plate an envelope with your donation of cash or check, (please, don't forget to write "Chris' Ordination" on the envelope and the memo line). You may also send a check by mail.

For practical reasons all donations should arrive before the end of May.

Thanks for supporting Chris!

Getting to Chris Christy's Ordination on June 11
There will be a wagon train (or conga line!) leaving from St. Luke's Saturday morning, June 11 at 6:00 a.m. headed south for Trinity Cathedral in Phoenix for Chris Christy's ordination to the Sacred Order of Deacons. Because parking at the cathedral is challenging at best, we need to leave early. This will allow the group to get parked, have a cup of coffee, freshen up, and get seated before the service begins at 10:00 a.m.

Sign-up sheets are now in the Gathering Hall to sign-up to help drive or to sign-up for a ride!

Women of the Bible
Joan Chittister writes about the witness and wisdom of women's voices in the Bible. She invites us to seek and embrace friendship as it is embodied between women, between God and all of creation, and between all human beings.

This is one of the books available for check-out displayed on the round table in the parish library. Click here to see the complete listing of books for "Women of the Bible".
Thank You!
We wanted to share a note of thanks as a follow-up to the Newcomers' Luncheon on May 22 from newcomer, Keehna Sture:

The Newcomers' Luncheon yesterday was lovely! The entire experience-- from the delicious food, to the fellowship, to the sharing of "newcomer stories"-- deepened my gratitude for having been led to St.Luke's! Thanks and blessings to each of you for your contribution to a synergistic experience that resoundingly said: "WELCOME!" I know that I speak for the entire group of newcomers when I say, again, THANK YOU!
