St. Luke's Weekly Epistle

Week of October 8 , 2017

A prayer of lament for those who grieve and to remember those in need of healing after the shooting in Las Vegas:

Eternal God, hear the cries of your people. Do not ignore our pleas for your mercy. We cry out to you; we beg you to hear our petitions. Behold now all who grieve; let them, by your Spirit, know of your compassion, even as their hearts are broken and their lives pierced with the pain of sorrow in the deep valley of grief. Bring comfort to those who yearn for healing from injury and bless with your wisdom and tenderness those who care for them. We confess that you have been our God in ages past; be now our God of steadfast love and mercy for years to come. Amen.

The Rev. Lowell G. Almen
Bishop of the Grand Canyon Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America

Acolyte Training
The word Acolyte is a traditional general term which means "assistant" and applies to all worship ministers.  Acolytes embody the ministry of all the baptized and play a vital role in helping the clergy cultivate an environment in which worship may be celebrated with reverence and awe, allowing for full participation by the congregation.

Would you like to serve at the Altar?  If the answer is "yes", or "maybe," please join us for our annual training/retraining on:

Free Table
The Free Table is off to a great start with many items having been given and received. Remember the table is near the piano in the parish hall. Any items on or under the table are free (the table itself is NOT free) and if you have items you wish to give place them on the table or near the piano if the table is not up.

By sharing what we have we help each other, and we help the environment. By giving things we don't currently need a new home we help to cut down on waste and on the need for more stuff to be made and shipped over here.

The table will be available at all three services, so whenever you worship, stop by and see what curiosities are available! It changes each week.

Journey to Generosity --
Reflection for October 8
"Living within a vision of God's justice"
by the Rev. Winnie Varghese
When I hear these words about tenant farmers, stewards, scheming to get more than their fair, legal share, I can't help but think of sharecroppers, serfs, peasants, landless laborers, migrants on every continent through the ages, wondering what it might take to create some security in their lives.
