Spirituality for the Second Half of Life Ministry
You are invited to join us for an event scheduled for Saturday, February 10, 2018, from 9:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m. to introduce this new ministry in the Diocese.
We all optimistically embark on a new phase of our lives in our 50s as we begin to contemplate retirement and a whole new way of living. But this exploration of new ways continues into our 90s and beyond - seemingly ever changing. We want to spend some fellowship time with you considering what we want this second half of our lives to look like - and how God desires to enter into both the adventure and the challenges - and how we, as a community of faith, can share the journey together - perhaps deciding together on a variety of stage- and age-related activities and gatherings. We hope that you will join us to explore ideas for the St. Luke's "family of sages". We will spend two hours thinking and planning together followed by lunch together at 11:30 a.m. We hope to see you then.
The Reverend Ann Johnson        Linda M. Williams, PhD, CSD

Please indicate your plan to attend on the sign-up sheet in the Gathering Hall
or call the Parish Office at 928-778-4499.

Outreach News
The Outreach Commission would like to remind everyone of the scholarships and grants due dates coming up in March.

The  2nd annual  St. Luke's Episcopal Church Educational Scholarship
application is now available on St. Luke's website. The name was changed to Educational Scholarship rather than College Scholarship due to the fact it also encompasses trades schools. The qualification to apply has changed to include any accredited school in  any state rather than Arizona only. If you know a student graduating from a quad-city high school direct him or her to St. Luke's website to apply for the Scholarship which is due March 30, 2018 . Applications are also available in the Gathering Hall on the Outreach table.

Many of you may know or be involved in a group/program that helps others and may need a little financial help, direct them to our website to fill out a grant  application for assistance. This is due March 15, 2018.

The next Outreach meeting will be Monday February 12, 2018 @ 4:00 pm.
Please join us as we are always looking for new ways in which we can spread God's news throughout our community.
A Magical Journey
Michael Goodluck, Navajo Flutist and Story Teller
The father of two children, Michael has dedicated himself to combating alcohol and drug abuse in the Navajo Nation as a Youth Coordinator working with Fighting Back, Inc. He adheres to this personal statement; "Each one of us has a unique opportunity to make this world the best it can become-for ourselves and the people around us."

As for his music, Michael has crafted his own line of flutes for 25 years. The haunting melodies that accompany his stories add a special element to the experience.

You're invited to meet him in person on Saturday February, 17, 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. at St. Luke's in the Parish Hall.

Building Bridges of Understanding dedicated to Caring, Learning, Interacting, Participating.
Getting to Know Muslim Neighbors
Learn more about the beliefs and practice of Islam through readings, lectures, discussions, and videos. A trip to a local mosque will be offered. This opportunity to broaden perspectives on faith and feelings of Muslims is guided by two scholars, one Christian and one Muslim.  Become familiar with the culture and beliefs, exploring beyond headlines, to engage the "heart-lines" of Muslim people.

Help Needed with Educational Scholarship Applications
As we did last year, St. Luke's will be awarding two $1000 scholarships to graduating seniors in the Quad Cities area.  The scholarships may be used for tuition, books, and other expenses of attending an accredited college or university, junior or community college, or vocational/trade school.  Applications are due March 30, 2018, and the awards will be announced at the 10:00 a.m. service on Sunday, May 6, 2018.  Between the application deadline and the announcement of the awards, we need volunteers to serve in three capacities:
  • Reading and reviewing the applications for completeness
  • Reading and evaluating the required two to three page essays
  • Interviewing the finalists on Saturday, April 28, 2018
If you would like to participate in the scholarship review in one of these ways or have any questions, please get in touch with Mary Berkheiser at  zukor1949@gmail.com.

Operation Deep Freeze
Operation Deep Freeze is held at the local Salvation Army. When the temperature goes below 28 degrees, an emergency winter shelter is provided with a hot meal, shower, and overnight stay for people who are homeless in the Prescott and Quad City area. Volunteers sign up to take a one week assignment, which runs from Monday through Sunday. St Luke's week is February 26 - March 4. If called upon the food for the evening meal must be prepared at the Salvation Army's kitchen. The Salvation Army will contact our lead person Liz Kennedy when the temperature is expected to go below 28 degrees, in turn she will contact whoever has signed up. The sign-up sheet is located in the Gathering Hall.
Lenten Soup Suppers
Each Wednesday in Lent (not Ash Wednesday) a group provides soups for the parish to share. It could be a group of people who are friends, a committee of people, a prayer group...just a group to provide the soup and bread for the evening. It is fun and delicious! Please check with your group to see if they are willing to offer this evening of food and fellowship. The dates available are Feb. 28, March 7, and March 21. Call Pam Williams if you need more information. 928-277-8226. Sign-up sheets are out now!

Becoming Beloved Community
THE JOURNEY AHEAD

Becoming Beloved Community represents a set of interrelated commitments around which we as Episcopalians may organize our many efforts to respond to racial injustice and grow a community of reconcilers, justice-makers, and healers.  As you continue to learn about this strategic vision we encourage you to imagine a labyrinth.  On the road toward reconciliation and healing, we move around corners and double back into quadrants we have indeed visited before, each time discovering a fresh revelation or challenge.
