St. Luke's Weekly Epistle
Week of October 30, 2016
Click here for this week's calendar & "Looking Ahead."
There is no doubt that St Luke's is a wonderful and welcoming congregation striving to share the Good News of Jesus Christ through all we do: worship, education, pastoral care, outreach, fellowship, and so much more!

There is no doubt that St Luke's is growing. When I look at the congregation during the different services, I see so many new faces from new members and visitors. New people are involved in all our ministries bringing new ideas and renewed energies. Our children and youth ministries are blooming, too!

Everything we do at St Luke's we do it because of the outpouring generosity of each and every one of you! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

In one week now, we are going to have our in-gathering Sunday, during which we will gather our pledge cards, bless them, and present them to the Lord. This in-gathering Sunday is the official end of our Stewardship Campaign. I hope we will have 100% pledgers at that time. What a wonderful testimony it would be! What a great message of love for the Lord and for our parish it would be!

Purposely, I did not talk about budget, bills, salaries, or commissions' needs during our campaign, because I deeply believe that Stewardship is, before all, a spiritual discipline. A spiritual discipline that calls us to be as generous as we can afford as a way to give thanks to the Lord from whom all blessings flow, and as a way to concretely support the Lord's work we do at St Luke's.

At this point of time however, the commissions have already expressed their financial needs for accomplishing their mission in 2017. Very soon the Finance and Budget Committee will review these demands, and will propose choices to the Vestry. My hope is that the Vestry will be able to adopt a balanced "Statement of Mission" (new name for the budget) before the end of November...

So, as your rector, and brother in Christ, I need your help.
Please, be generous!
Please, don't wait until the end of December to return your pledge card! Bring it to one of the services of November 4th and 5th.

If you are unable to attend church that weekend, please send your card by mail ASAP, or send us an email at with the amount you want to pledge for 2017, and we will contact you for the details.

To conclude, I want to use Paul's words to the Corinthians, I'm certain that you will be enriched in every way for your great generosity, which will produce thanksgiving to God through St Luke's ministries. ( 2 Co 9.11)

In thankfulness for the generosity of St Luke's people,

Online Pledging

United Thank Offering Ingathering Weekend: October 29-30
This is fall United Thank Offering ingathering weekend, your opportunity to express thanks for many blessings received. These might include your family and friends, beautiful weather and environment, St. Luke's parish, our country; you can name many more!

The large boxes will be passed after the usual offering plates, and you may place your boxes or envelopes in them. If you forget your UTO offering you may bring it next week. Thanks!
Eileen's Retirement
After 12 years of great service, Eileen Stanton, is leaving us. She first was St Luke's Bookkeeper, under Fr. Paul. She served so well that she became St Luke's Financial Assistant helping the Rector, Treasurer, Wardens and Vestry to manage our finances and to make good decisions. She worked with 3 rectors, 2 interim rectors, 4 treasurers, 8 senior wardens, and countless volunteers. She will be missed, and we wish her the best for this next step of her life.

Eileen is a very discreet person and does not want to be at the center of attention. However, we managed to surprised her this past Wednesday with a farewell lunch at the Manzanita Grille with the staff, the clergy, and the Vestry members. It was good to celebrate her and to show her how much we appreciate her! A few pictures from the special lunch are below!

Calling Veterans and their families!
Veterans' Day, November 11, is fast approaching. This year we would like to expand our previous years' observations by having a special coffee hour to honor our veterans and putting together a list recognizing current veterans and a list of remembrance for those no longer with us. Please email or drop off at the Church Office or in the Gathering Hall the following information: name, branch of service, dates of service, and a picture, preferably in uniform. For the spouses or children of veterans, please do the same for your loved ones. We need this as soon as possible so we can compile our honor display. We can copy photos! Please let us know if you would like to help make this a very special celebration. Contact Ed and Jan Hume by clicking here.
Come and watch The Champions on November 12
The Champions, a documentary, which will be shown on Saturday, November 12, at 3 p.m. in the Parish Hall, is an inspirational story about the pit bulls rescued from the brutal fighting ring of former Atlanta Falcon's star quarterback, Michael Vick, and those who risked it all to save them, despite pressures from PETA and the Humane Society to euthanize the dogs. It is a story of second chances, redemption and hope. This uplifting documentary takes us on a journey about more than just dogs-about prejudice, being misunderstood, the power of resilience, and the significance of the relationship we as humans have with animals.
Who is My Neighbor?
You are invited to attend a special presentation: "Who Is My Neighbor", research and findings released by the Morrison Institute by The Rev. Richard Morrison, Canon for Ecumenical and Community Relations on Sunday, November 13, after the 10 a.m. service in the Parish Hall.
We also welcome Canon Morrison as our guest preacher for both the 8:00 and 10:00 AM services. Again, the 30 minute presentation, which will specifically address northern Arizona demographics, will be held during the coffee hour after the 10 a.m. service on November 13.

Don't Spend Christmas Alone - St. Luke's Gift to the Community
December 25, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Shuttle Transportation News:   When it comes to a need to transport Christmas dinner guests from Prescott to St. Luke's, for many years we have been fortunate to count on the diligent help of Scott DeJoseph who coordinates two vans from The Prescott Christian Church; thank you for partaking once again!

This year, we are extending a broader invite to our beloved community! Transportation will be offered from Prescott Valley (PV), thanks to Rod and Cindy Lusk, owners of New Horizons Transport, and from Chino Valley, thanks to Sandy Stutey, Director of Yavapai Regional Transit. Many new guests will benefit from this opportunity. Without shuttle transportation many would have stayed home, but, instead, they will share holiday joy among us.  On behalf of St. Luke's parish members and guests, thank you for making this event possible for new guests.
Please thank and support the businesses that so generously join hands with St. Luke's to outreach and service the Quad-city community. You make the difference!

Angeles Ramos Zarate, Event Chairwoman

"At the end of life we will not be judged by how many diplomas we have received; how much money we have made; how many great things we have done. We will be judged by, 'I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat, I was naked and you clothed me, I was homeless, and you took me in.'" -Mother Teresa

Outreach Commission Notes
Kenya Project: Last fall the Outreach Commission decided to begin a fundraising project for the Amagoro Junior Academy in Katakawa Kenya. The funds were to be used for the building of four classrooms. The original plan was to raise $3,500 a year for four years. Through the amazing generosity of the parishioners of St. Luke's, we raised approximately $12,000 in less than one year. We are asking you to help us raise $2,000 to complete our commitment in one year. Photos of the progress of construction on the classrooms are in the Gathering Hall along with a box containing envelopes in which donations can be placed. You may turn your donations in directly to the office or place them in the offering plate. Please write Kenya Project on the memo line of your check.

Be a Santa to a Senior: For the last 12 years, Home Instead Senior Care has partnered with
local non-profits to identify lonely, isolated and seniors in need to share a little holiday cheer.  We anticipate providing gifts to approximately 300 seniors in our community. Many seniors have difficulty opening packages.
Please purchase a gift bag(s) and/or holiday tissue paper.
Deposit bags and paper in the designated box in the Gathering Hall. For more info on Be a Santa to a Senior, contact Home Instead Senior Care at 928-708-9960.

The Outreach Commission usually meets monthly at 4 PM in the Conference Room. Our next meeting is scheduled for November 14. We would welcome your attendance at this or a future meeting to learn more.
The Truth About Cancer: A Testimonial
"...Thank you very kindly for taking the time to share this impactful documentary series, along with your wisdom and professional insights, over the past several weeks. My husband and I both lost parents to cancer. It seems to be so prevalent these days that, quite frankly, it is a concern that often crosses my mind. How wonderful it is to know that there are physically and spiritually healthy alternatives to the common treatments of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation-all of which have scientifically-supported outcomes. It has also been invaluable to learn methods we can use at home of preventing cancer and other chronic diseases from ever developing in the first place. Again, many thanks."

The nine-week series continues on Monday, October 31, at 6 p.m. in the Conference Room at St. Luke's.
