Operation Deep Freeze
St. Luke's is sponsoring two weeks February 2nd-8th and February 16th -22nd to cook for approximately 25 people when the temperature goes below freezing.
The Salvation Army opens its doors for dinner and provides sleeping arrangement for those sleeping outside. The meals are simple. (e.g. sloppy joes, coleslaw, baked beans, chips and dessert) Food is prepared at the Salvation Army. You can create your own menu that you would like to serve. We need a minimum of 4 people per evening.
Don't miss out on this fun evening working side by side with your parish family!
If you see this as a project you would like to be involved in
Sign Up in the Gathering Hall or Call Mary Hallford at 602-796-1177.
Companion of the Order
Do you know that the Episcopal Church in America recognizes around 30 Religious (monastic type) communities? The communities range from traditional monastery or convent bound orders to ones scattered with no formal home residence. Some orders are segregated by gender and some are open to all. Each order centers around an established Rule of Life - a set of instructions on the rhythms of living out our baptismal promises. Many orders have a focused outreach (teaching, hospitality for retreats, pastoral care, working with the homeless, etc.)
I was an Associate of a religious order, The Sisters of the Holy Nativity, for over 40 years until they became retired and unable to function. They provided a rule of Life and spiritual structure for me from the time I was in high school until a few years ago. Now, I am making a commitment to become a Companion with the order known as Anamchara Fellowship. I am excited about being back in a community with a daily rhythm of study, prayer and a new but similar Rule of Life. While the S.H.N. order was all women, Convent and Retreat House based, and deeply Anglican, my new association with the Anamchara Fellowship is more contemporary with single, married, and open gender members. They do not have a central home but have a yearly Gathering of members and many opportunities for communal worship including daily Compline on Zoom on the internet. They are divided into Priories which meet monthly at various places across the country. They base daily worship and communal worship on The Northumbrian Prayer Book with a bias towards Celtic prayers and saints.
Two nuns from the Anamchara Fellowship will attend St. Luke's on February 2nd to administer my oath to become a Companion of the Order. I hope you will take the opportunity to ask them (or me) questions you might have about this part of our Christian and Episcopal expression of faith.
Faithfully,   Nancy Carmichael

St Luke's Centering Prayer Group
When you pray, go into your inner room, close the door and pray to your Father in secret. And your Father, who sees in secret, will cause your life to blossom. Matthew 6.6
Is your prayer life calling you to a deep resting in God beyond thoughts, words and feelings? Do you already have a regular practice of silent prayer and appreciate the intimacy of shared silence? The Centering Prayer Group helps its members to establish and maintain a daily practice of the prayer of quiet, what Christians refer to as contemplative prayer. Our group gathers on the second and fourth Fridays in the Meditation Room (adjacent to the Fellowship Hall) from 9 to 10:30 AM. We begin with 20-minutes of communal silence, followed by discussion of materials that deepen our understanding of contemplative living. This month we finish Martin Laird's A Sunlit Absence. In February, we will begin our first-ever video series Following the Mystics Through the Narrow Gate with James Finley and Richard Rohr. All are welcome - come "taste and see".
Facilitator Linda Guy (2linda.guy@gmail.com) can be contacted for more information.
