Responding to Gulf Coast Floods
In mid-August, parts of the US Gulf Coast experienced historic levels of flooding, with at least seven dead, and tens of thousands unable to return to their homes. As of Monday, August 15, more than 40,000 homes and businesses remained without power, and over 10,000 homes were flooded.

Episcopal Relief & Development's US Disaster Team has been in close contact with dioceses in the region and is providing support for their local efforts. The immediate response will help provide basic necessities to those most impacted. Affected dioceses will then coordinate with Episcopal Relief & Development to meet needs in the coming months and years. Currently, the Episcopal Diocese of Louisiana, its churches and their ministries are reaching out to those in need of assistance, assessing what needs to be done and serving as best they can.

"In a disaster like this, we work closely with local church leaders to assess what is truly needed," said Katie Mears, Director of Episcopal Relief & Development's US Disaster Program. "We have begun to provide resources needed to assist those most vulnerable."

Contemplative / Centering Prayer Update
The Introduction to Centering Prayer workshop last Saturday was very well attended: 20 people! The interest and enthusiasm that permeated the day is a reflection, I believe, of the widespread hunger among us all for a way to stay deeply connected with God in the midst of our busy, noisy lives. With the growing interest in Centering Prayer among our parishioners, St. Luke's now has a designated meditation room, next to the library, where, beginning  tonight , our monthly contemplative prayer gatherings will be held. All are welcome! The session will begin at  6 p.m.  with a CD presentation by Father Thomas Keating, entitled "Consenting to the Presence of God," followed by 20 minutes of Centering Prayer. Please contact me--Keehna Sture --if you have questions:   ksture5983@gmail.com
Weekly AA Meetings Continue Fridays at 5:30 p.m.

The Recovering group of Alcoholics Anonymous continues its Friday 5:30 p.m. meetings at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in the Conference Room. This is an OPEN group. For further information, call 480-244-6669.
The Students are Back!
We received a nice update from Brad Eubanks, the Chaplain at Canterbury, Episcopal Campus Ministry in Flagstaff, that we wanted to share with you:

I am so excited that my office is no longer a quiet sanctuary, that there is laughter arising from all over Canterbury, that the roads in Flagstaff are no longer as empty... that's right! the STUDENTS HAVE RETURNED!  And Canterbury is here to greet them with open arms and open hearts.

Thank you for all of your support in making Canterbury what it is.
We couldn't do this without you. From friendship to prayers to financial support, we count on you to help make our campus ministry here in Flagstaff happen. Thank you.
Please hold the students, faculty, and staff of Northern Arizona University in your prayers
as we begin a new academic year.
Progressive Christian Studies continue this Wednesday
The fall session of the Progressive Christian Studies continues this coming Wednesday, August 31, from 5 to 6 p.m. in the Conference Room. It is based upon the book Speaking Christian by Marcus Borg. EfM - Education for Ministry
Education for Ministry invites people into small, mentored communities that help us understand our lives and shape our actions as we deepen our Christian faith. We believe a gracious God calls us into relationship to serve the world. Through study, prayer, and theological reflection, EfM enables us to discover and exercise our gifts for ministry where we live and work.

EfM at St. Luke's begins Thursday, September 1. For more information, contact Sharon Neece by email  here.
