Supply priest on January 22
While the Staff & Vestry are away on retreat, we will have a guest preacher & author join us at St. Margaret’s! The Rev. Mary Demmler is a long-time friend of Jeff’s (they went through discernment together in the Diocese of Georgia) and is also the author of a book called Phe & the Work of Death. Mary will preach and celebrate at both services and will also lead a forum on her book.
About Mary:
The Rev. Mary R. H. Demmler has been a priest in the Episcopal Church since 2004 and worked in parishes around the Southeast. Currently she lives in Hall County with her family on their farm where she serves as farm manager. She continues to write, having published her first book Phe and the Work of Death in early 2022. She also reflects on a variety of topics on her blog, prayerfulkitchen.blog. Mary leads one day and weekend retreats on a variety of spiritual topics. She also works part time for Grace, Gainesville, as their Associate Priest for Youth. Her husband, Derek, is an educator at Gainesville High School. Their three kids, River, Bailey, and William, enjoy acting and the arts, playing sports, spending time on the farm, and being involved in church life.
About Phe & the Work of Death:
When we die, do we die alone? Even when surrounded by loved ones, the dying person enters into an aloneness, a realm where the living cannot reach. But is it possible that other beings surround us as we enter and then depart the final earthly stage? Author Mary Demmler, an Episcopal priest, allows us to hear the voice of such a being, a companion and guide during the very last stage of life in a variety of human beings undergoing the ultimate separation. We too hear Phe’s voice, as we visit the dying with her, feeling the hope of the presences, and knowing their compassion and awareness of centuries-long experience with dying. In the process we witness changes even in the beings themselves. This is a comforting book, filled with love and with hope.

From the Rector
Hebrews - Some people group Hebrews in with Paul’s letters, but this is one epistle that is written so differently, that it’s pretty clear to most scholars that Paul wasn’t the author. This letter is very general, by an anonymous author to an anonymous Jewish-Christian audience. The author was clearly experiencing persecution, so that sets the context to both elevate the person of Jesus and to challenge the readers to remain faithful. In terms of elevating Jesus, the author describes Jesus’ role takes precedence to angels, the Torah, Moses, and the priests. The reason is because Jesus sacrificed all for the sake of humanity. His self-emptying and humility elevate him as the ultimate priestly king, and that is what connects him to the Hebrew Covenant. Hebrews can sometimes be difficult for Gentiles to absorb completely, however this letter in the New Testament reminds us of the importance of the Old Testament and how Jesus carries God’s plan forward to create the ultimate Reign of God. Next week: James!

Adult Formation & Classes
- Wednesdays at 1:00pm: Centering Prayer with Pauline Rodwell
([email protected]) on Zoom

Are you interested in participating in a Bible Challenge; i.e., reading the Bible in one year? We did this about three years ago, and those who participated got a lot out of it. A schedule was sent out so everyone read the same scriptures at one time. A few of us posted on St. Margaret’s Facebook page interesting information, songs or stories that went along with the days’ readings. Some interest has been expressed in doing this again, possibly adding weekly or monthly meetings (in person or via Zoom) to discuss the readings. If you are interested in participating in such a challenge, please contact Pauline Rodwell at [email protected] or 770-836-1170. Please don’t wait – the challenge would begin on New Year’s Day!
| The Journey is a second option for daily scripture readings and reflections and is now available online free of charge. More information is available at https://www.biblereading.org. | | |

When I Go…
A 4-week series on getting your affairs in order starting January 29 at 10:10am
Have you ever had to plan a loved one’s funeral without knowing what to do? Or had to deal with their estate without having the proper legal ease? Too often, we’re making important decisions while we’re in the midst of grief, which makes it all the more difficult. People often “don’t want to talk about it,” however, talking about our deaths is important, healthy, and can be a true gift to your loved ones. In this 4-week series, we will look at the various areas one needs to prepare.
Jan 29 - Father Jeff will discuss the Burial Rite & preparing for your liturgical service.
Feb 5 - Linda Parmer will talk about the legal planning one needs to think about.
Feb 12 - Keith Hancock from Almon Funeral Home will talk about arranging the other necessary parts of a funeral.
Feb 19 - Ketty Cusick will talk about the gift of legacy planning
If you aren’t able to attend these, but are interested, please let Jeff know so we can get you the information you need.
