ABOUT THE GNOSTIC GOSPELS AND GNOSTICISM
(an introductory encounter- Oct 13, 20 and 27, led by Lamar Cope) During the 2
century C.E. there were a number of sectarian spin off groups that formed within the larger umbrella of Christendom. We will explore the world of Gnostic thought and the Christian examples of it. Then, with that world in mind, we will examine briefly two of the so-called gnostic gospels, The Gospel of Thomas and the Gospel of Philip. We will ask how they resemble the gospels in the New Testament, how they differ from them, and why they were not included in it. Finally we will explore briefly how gnosticism may be of value for us today.
