NEWS & EVENTS
From Your
Senior Pastor

I hope you have had a chance to read the materials and watch the video concerning some of the hopes and dreams for the Burton Street House (see below). Please join me in thanking those who served on the task force that has worked so hard for many months: Gwen Ziegler (chair), Nathan Custer (architect), Joe Adams, Nick and Pam Ripley, Karen Kremer, Pastor Steve Pichaske and then Tammy Stephens. They have made it possible for Young Life to begin using the building already - and they have helped us all consider how that historic House, once the parsonage for St. Mark’s, can someday be used for youth ministry, community outreach, and congregational programs. ~ Pastor Westphal
Burton House Proposed Improvements

Based on input from the August 15 informational meeting, the current plan is to postpone the more extensive renovations and instead seek gifts in this fall’s Special Appeal to do essential repairs on the Burton Street House. Here is updated information on the proposed Burton House improvements:

  • The journey of the Burton House purpose can be viewed here.
  • Potential "days in the life" of the Burton Street house can be viewed here.
  • Burton House renderings can be viewed here.
  • An informational video on the remodel from members of the Burton House Committee can be viewed here.
  • A video from the Washington team lead of Young Life regarding their plans for usage of the Burton House can be viewed here.
Sunday School Update

What a joy it was to see our children and families return for Rally Day and the return of St. Mark’s Sunday School! It’s not too late to register your student for the 2021-2022 school year. Click here or to register today. Contact Nancy Vogel at [email protected] with questions.
The Faith at Home resource is once again available for families who are worshiping at home. This weekly resource has transitioned from one which follows the weekly preaching theme to one which follows our weekly Sunday School lesson (for students 3 years old thru 6th grade). Student leaflets (like those our “in-person” students use each week) are available to families to pick up from the Main Street vestibule on the east side of St. Mark’s. Contact Nancy Vogel ([email protected]) with questions.

What exactly is Trunk or Treat?
People decorate the trunks of their cars (and in some cases, the surrounding areas), park in the church parking lot, and hand out treats to children dressed in costumes!

How do I decorate my trunk?
Pick a theme or let your imagination run wild! (Please choose themes that are family friendly and appropriate for church and children).

What else will there be to do?
We’ll have games and a balloon artist, a contest with prize for the best trunk, and of course, CANDY!

Who is invited to this event?
All ages are invited to participate! Please note that children must be accompanied by an adult. Be sure to spread the word, and invite your friends, family and neighbors to join in the fun!

I want to participate…do I need to sign up?
If you are decorating your trunk and handing out treats, please sign up in the Gathering Space or by clicking here. If you are simply coming to join in the fun, there’s no need to sign up.

Questions? Contact Nancy Vogel at [email protected].
Who will claim this year’s title for Best Trunk? It could be YOU! Start planning your costumes and trunk today!
Highlights from the September 19
Special Congregational Meeting

Congregation President Case Pudik reviewed the reason for needing to make certain safety renovations to our building in order for DCFS to renew the license for St. Mark's Child Care and Preschool. He also explained that the cost ($100,000) exceeds 6% of our operating budget, requiring congregational approval. This will be funded with $60,000 in Child Care and Preschool reserves and $40,000 to be raised from our upcoming Stewardship Special Appeal.

A motion to approve the renovations and funding plan was unanimously approved by members present.
