St. Mark's Weekly E-blast

We gather, connect, and serve so all may experience the love of Christ.

Do you remember what it felt like to be new in a community?

I do. I drove a U-Haul to Chicago to attend seminary—young, single, and knowing almost no one. It was a long way from my home in northern Florida, and that first semester was hard. I had lived away from home before, but never this far. I didn’t go home for Thanksgiving or any other holiday that fall.

What carried me through were the evening meals in the seminary cafeteria. Friday nights were my favorite—international students gathered to talk, laugh, and share stories. That Thanksgiving, one student roasted a turkey, and the rest of us brought dishes from our own cultures. It was a feast of food and friendship.

As the school year begins, how will you choose to gather?

At church, we often gather with familiar faces—people we know from our pew or neighborhood. But what would it look like to intentionally connect with someone new?

Many of you already do this through ICS or Nash, tutoring students, distributing food, and working side by side with others. Thank you.

Now we have a new opportunity, one that lets you not only gather around the table, but also welcome someone far from home. Through a program called International Friends, you can help a student from another country feel seen, known, and loved—just like I once needed.

Come to the Magee campus this Sunday or the Sanctuary campus next month to learn more and meet a representative from International Friends. Let’s make room at the table.

Be a Friend to the World — Right Here in Tucson

Did you know that more than 7,000 international students from 141 countries studied at the University of Arizona last year? These students often arrive in Tucson eager to connect with the local community, learn about American culture, and share their own backgrounds and traditions.

International Friends (Tucson) is a volunteer organization that helps build these connections by pairing international students with local community members who commit to meeting with their student at least once a month for one year. It’s a simple and meaningful way to foster friendship, cultural exchange, and mutual understanding.

Each fall, International Friends hosts a welcome picnic for students and their local hosts to kick off the academic year and begin building relationships.

As part of our commitment to hospitality and welcome, the Church & Society Committee at St. Mark’s UMC is partnering with International Friends to support this effort. We invite you to learn more:

· Sunday, August 10 — A representative from International Friends will give a short presentation in the Fellowship Hall at the Magee Campus, following both the 8:30 and 10:00 AM services.

· A similar presentation will be offered at the Sanctuary Campus on Sunday, September 7.

If you’re ready to volunteer or want to explore what’s involved, you can fill out a brief application here:

Indigenous Season of Learning

A movement called Land Back was started a few years ago to restore justice to Indigenous communities. In some cases it is tribes buying back land, especially sacred land. Sometimes it is giving tribal nations stewardship of land. In 2021 full stewardship of the National Bison range in Montana was given to local tribes. And earlier this year the Tohono O’odham nation signed a co-stewardship agreement with the Bureau of Land Management for the Baboquivari Mountains and Coyote Mountains. - Church and Society
