Did you ever watch the show Myth Busters? Classified on wikipedia as "science entertainment," this show set out to "use elements of the scientific method to test the validity of rumors, myths, movie scenes, adages, Internet videos, and news stories." One episode I remember focused on what we call the five-second rule... you know that rule you told your kids that food was safe to eat if it was on the floor less than five seconds. Well, they demonstrated that, in face, bacteria transfers to food immediately, regardless of how long it's been on a contaminated surface. They did demonstrate that how much bacteria transferred depended on factors like the surface type, moisture, and the food itself, not the time spent on the floor. I guess I should stop telling my kids it's safe to eat it if they drop it on the floor! Myth busted.
This Easter season, we are looking at some of the myths of the Christian faith. These are things we tell people that aren't actually even true: God won't give you more than you can handle... God helps those who help themselves... love the sinner, hate the sin. All of these have some kernel of truth, but ultimately they are not rooted in our biblical faith.
Join us for worship this week as we bust the myth that "Everything happens for a reason." It's also Star Wars Day, but we do encourage you to use the force and leave your lightsaber at home.
See you soon,
— Pastor Lynn
