Life, Death, and Everything in Between—Your Input Matters

When my son was in early elementary school, he surprised us at the dinner table with: “I want to see a dead person.” Once my husband and I picked our jaws up off the floor, we discovered his curiosity came from recent losses in our church—people he knew and cared about. He wasn’t trying to be morbid. He simply wondered.

In our family, we talk about death often—it’s inevitable when both parents are pastors. But we know that not everyone is comfortable with those conversations. Many avoid the topic altogether until they have no choice.

And yet, talking about death can be deeply meaningful. It can help us face life’s hardest moments with more courage, understanding, and even peace. That’s why the Counselor in Residence Committee is working with Roots and Roads Community Hospice Foundation to explore ways to create safe, open spaces—much like a Death Café—where we can share stories, ask questions, and reflect together.

Before we begin, we want to hear from you! Check your inbox tomorrow for a brief survey from the Counselor in Residence Committee. Please take a few minutes to answer our questions. Your feedback will shape the topics, format, and tone of these conversations so they can meet the real needs and questions of our community.

After that dinner-table conversation years ago, my son learned that curiosity about death is really curiosity about life—about meaning, love, and connection. My hope is that these conversations will help all of us find that same deeper understanding.

See you soon

This Friday, August 15, join the Mark-a-Ritas for Bunco at 2 pm in room 17/18 at the Magee Campus.

Join us this Sunday at the Sanctuary Campus for our monthly potluck. Bring a dish to share (no nuts please!) and come and get to know all the great people at the Sanctuary Campus!

THANK YOU!

Thanks to the generosity of the St. Mark’s congregation and the tireless efforts of the Nash Neighbors committee members, 80% of the teachers’ wish lists were purchased and delivered to the school on 8/1. While we strive to fill every grade level request completely, there are always more needs than assets. With the donations of the congregation and monies from Nash Neighbors, the fact that we were able to fulfill so many needs is incredible! The school staff is so very grateful as are the Nash committee members.

The July Peanut Butter Party for Interfaith Community Services is over and we exceeded our goal once again! A huge Thank you to our congregation for helping to feed families this summer! Our congregation brought in 1775 jars of peanut butter and an anonymous donor provided an additional 1768 jars for a grand total of 3543 jars of peanut butter!

Bible and a Bite is back from it Summer Hiatus!

Join us on Thursdays at 12:30 pm at the home of Chris Shafer. Bring a something to eat and the most current Upper Room for study, prayer, and conversation. Contact the church office if you need the address.

August 24 at 3 pm in the Magee Campus sanctuary.
