FaithWorks Pub Lunch

By Kathy Mansfield, Chair, Outreach Committee

The Outreach Committee organized a hearty lunch after the 11 a.m. service on March 30 to launch the FaithWorks Campaign. The meal – an incredible shepherd’s pie and caesar salad – was curated by Chefs Phil Devine and Vicki Cooper. Desserts were provided by Linda Markowsky, Tim Stephenson, and Judith Kidd. Happily, $680 was raised for FaithWorks.

After lunch, Jenny Formanek outlined some of the many wonderful services funded by FaithWorks, including the Community Centre at All Saints’ Anglican Church; A Place Called Home in Lindsay, Ontario; the CommUNITY Hub at Holy Trinity, Trinity Square; One City in Peterborough; the Breakfast and Lunch program at St. James’, Orillia; the Outreach program at St. Stephen-in-the-Fields, Toronto; the Anglican United Refugee Alliance (AURA); and the Flemingdon Park Ministry, Toronto. These are just a few of the many ministry partners funded by FaithWorks.

Jay Haddad spoke about the African philosophy of "Ubuntu," which means "I am because you are." We are all interconnected in a shared humanity. Individual security depends on the well-being of the whole community. There was then a panel discussion with guests Jennifer Stephenson, Romero House Assistant Director Operations, and Rev’d Leigh Kern, Right Relations Coordinator for the Diocese of Toronto. An engaging discussion ensued around advocacy for the homeless, which was identified as a central area of concern by both panelists. Many ways in which community members can come together to advocate and support each other were discussed.

Thank you to all who volunteered for the event, but in particular the other members of the Outreach Committee: Father Hatt, Jenny Formanek, Jay Haddad, Rebecca Eacho, Linda Markowsky, Judith Kidd, Jaby Mathew, Adrienne Beecker, Aster Samuel, Glen Storey, and Larry and Mely Barwick.

“I was hungry and you gave me food;

I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink;

I was a stranger and you welcomed me; I was naked and you gave me clothing;

I was sick and you took care of me; I was in prison and you visited me.” (Matthew 25:35,36)
