TOP STORY
FEAST OF THE TRANSFIGURATION OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST

On Sunday, July 28, the Armenian Church observes one of its five major feasts: the Feast of the Transfiguration of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The observance recalls Christ's ascent up Mount Tabor, accompanied by his disciples John, James, and Peter. At the mountain's summit, to the disciples' frightened amazement, Christ was transfigured in a blinding white light; the Old Testament figures Moses and Elijah emerged from the mists of time to confer with the Lord; and the voice of God boomed from out of the heavens to affirm Jesus as his Son.

Jesus urged the disciples not to speak of it. But the gospels recorded it for posterity, and the Armenian Church celebrates it every year.

In a uniquely Armenian part of the celebration, churchgoers sprinkle each other with water on the feast day-which Armenians call "Vartavar." What does water have to do with Christ's Transfiguration? For an answer, watch the latest Bread & Salt video. Click on the link to view "Make a Splash"

To learn more about this feast day, download the Diocese's Transfiguration iBook . It is packed with interactive features, including video, music, photo galleries, and more. A version of the book is also available for non-iPad users; click on the following links to view it in your browser or to download a PDF .

PARISH NEWS
DTP 2019

Through the grace of God, Haig Jamgochian, Sbdn. Armen Chubukian, Dn. Mark Krikorian and I were blessed to be able to represent St. Mary Armenian Church of Washington D.C. at this year’s St. Nersess Armenian Seminary Deacons Training Program. For ten days we participated in daily activities including morning and evening services, deacons training classes, Armenian language classes, bible studies, lectures, and cultural hour. Throughout the week we also attended special events such as a personal invitation to our primate H.E. Bishop Daniel Findikyan’s private hall for dinner and a Q&A session. We also attended and participated in the Divine Liturgy at St. Gregory the Enlightener Armenian Church in White Plains, NY. Later in the session we had our annual beach day at Rye Playland and concluded the evening with a visit to the amusement park and watching the fire works for the 4th of July. Lastly, we were able to bare witness and participate in H.E. Bishop Daniel Findikyan’s first diaconal ordination, where he ordained Johnny Chadoyan to the Deaconate in St. Hagop Chapel. What St. Nersess summer programs offer is not just fun and knowledge but access to some of the best quality staff and tools our Diocese has to offer. After attending a summer conference at St. Nersess, you or your child will not just leave a better Armenian, Christian and person, but most importantly will leave the seminary campus with the tools needed to be a true Christian in 2019. Our goal at St. Nersess Deacons Training Program is for our participants to leave the seminary understanding their role in the church and their role as part of the body of Christ. There is also the added benefit of establishing a lifelong brotherhood with people all over our diocese and abroad. If anyone of you are interested in having your child(ren) attend the St. Nersess summer conferences, please look at their website, stnersess.edu for more information. St. Nersess also offers a high school conference, a post high school conference, and an adult conference for those who are not interested in being altar servers but want the St. Nersess experience. Please consider St. Nersess Armenian Seminary Summer Conferences for your summer plans next year.

Bishop Mashalian Elected as Patriarchal Locum Tenens

The Armenian Patriarchate of Constantinople took an important step towards the election of a new patriarch this week, when it chose Bishop Sahak Mashalian to fill the role of “locum tenens”: the “placeholder” who will administer the Patriarchate until a new Armenian Patriarch is chosen.

The election of Bishop Mashalian was the result of a closed-door meeting of the patriarchal congregation on July 4, which was scheduled to follow the mourning period for the late Archbishop Mesrob Mutafyan, the 84th Armenian Patriarch of Constantinople, who passed away last March following a decade of incapacitation due to illness.

In his role as locum tenens, Bishop Mashalian’s principle task will be to organize a patriarchal election, while managing the operations of the Patriarchate until then. In remarks to the public following the July 4 meeting, he said: “The congregational assembly has chosen me as locum tenens by a majority of the votes. Now, the placeholder should order the election process, lead all ecclesiastical meetings, and ensure that the elections are held impartially. I am very grateful that my church brothers have shown this confidence in me, and I will try to be worthy of the trust given me by our clergy and people.”

The Istanbul native has previously served in the Armenian Church’s Jerusalem Patriarchate; in Armenia as dean of Holy Etchmiadzin’s Kevorkian Seminary; and at the Istanbul Patriarchate as director of ecumenical and interfaith relations, and secretary of the Religious Council.

The election of an 85th Armenian Patriarch of Constantinople could take place before the end of the year—but the timeframe depends on the assent of political and religious authorities. When the election is scheduled, Bishop Mashalian is expected to be among the candidates, along with the long-serving patriarchal vicar Archbishop Aram Ateshyan, and others as yet unannounced.

Bishop Daniel Ordains His First Priest: Fr. Andreas Garabedian

In the closing days of June the Armenian Church was blessed with a new priest, as Diocesan Primate Bishop Daniel performed the sacrament of holy orders on the former Deacon Narek Garabedian. As part of the ordination, the Primate conferred a new name on the candidate, who will henceforth be known as the Reverend Fr. Andreas (Andrew).

The ceremonies, which included a Service of Calling on Friday evening, June 28, and a Divine Liturgy on Saturday, June 29, took place at the St. Gregory the Illuminator Church of Chicago, IL, where Fr. Andreas has served for the past two years as Deacon-in-Charge, and where he will return as pastor following the traditional 40-day period of seclusion.

Clergy and faithful from throughout the region joined the local parishioners to take part in the service and its subsequent celebratory banquet, honoring the start of Fr. Andreas’ priestly ministry.

The occasion also marked a milestone in the ministry of the Primate, as Fr. Andreas is the very first priest to be ordained by Bishop Daniel’s hand. But the second is fast approaching: Deacon Arman Galstyan will be ordained by Bishop Daniel on July 26-27, at the St. George Church of Hartford, CT. ( Click here  for information on that event.)

FAR Supports Musical Education

Ani and Robert Mgdesyan, ages 7 and 10, live in Georgia’s Javakhk Region with their mother and grandparents. Their father, Onik, who was a local police chief, died in a car accident in 2012. He made a good salary and since his death, their mother Amalya, a teacher, has struggled greatly to try to make ends meet. Last year, both children were accepted into FAR’s Children of Armenia Sponsorship Program (CASP) and will receive support in the form of annual stipends until they turn 18. In this way, CASP has been a great help, enabling Amalya to be able to afford winter clothes and firewood to heat their house, which helps the family to survive the brutal Javakhk winters. CASP currently helps a total of 539 children and their families. This year, 86 of those children are from Javakhk. Read more here : https://farusa.org/2019/07/04/casp-casp-stipends-assist-javakhk-siblings-and-their-struggling-family/ To support FAR’s educational projects, go to:   https://weareayo.org/donate
BIBLE READING
13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say the Son of Manis?"14 They replied, "Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the proph ets."15 "But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?"16 Simon Peter answered, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God."17 Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. 18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."20 Then he ordered his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.17 After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. 2 There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. 3 Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus.4 Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters-one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah."5 While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!"6 When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified. 7 But Jesus came and touched them. "Get up," he said. "Don't be afraid." 8 When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus.9 As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus instructed them, "Don't tell anyone what you have seen, until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead."10 The disciples asked him, "Why then do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?"11 Jesus replied, "To be sure, Elijah comes and will restore all things. 12 But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but have done to him everything they wished. In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands." 13 Then the disciples understood that he was talking to them about John the Baptist.
