TOP STORY
EAST OF THE ASSUMPTION OF THE HOLY MOTHER OF GOD

Each year on the Sunday closest to the date of August 18, the Armenian Church celebrates the Feast of the Assumption of St. Mary, the Holy Mother of God. In the Calendar of the Armenian Church, this feast is the fourth of five major feasts that are commemorated, and is the oldest one dedicated to St. Mary.

According to tradition, following the Ascension of Christ, Mary lived out the rest of her days in Jerusalem, cared for by St. John the Evangelist. She died in Jerusalem some 15 years after Christ's Ascension and was buried in her family tomb in Gethsemane.

After she passed away, all the apostles-save Bartholomew who was absent at that time-conducted her funeral with great ceremony at a cave-like tomb in the Garden of Gethsemane. Later, St. Bartholomew returned and wished to see Mary one last time.

He convinced the apostles to open the tomb, but they could not find her body inside. Angels' voices were heard for three days and nights. The apostles interpreted the angels' singing as a sign that our Lord had assumed, or taken up, his mother into heaven as he had promised her.

They found the empty tomb a confirmation of that promise for she had not been dead, but had fallen asleep. For this reason, the church refers to the end of Mary's earthly life as "the dormition" rather than "death."

The Armenian Church has a deep and abiding respect towards St. Mary. Special emphasis is placed on her being a mother, her honesty, her unique spirit of humility, her virtuous behavior and her unselfish dedication.

DIOCESAN & OTHER NEWS
Assumption of the Holy Mother-of-God

On Sunday, August 18, the Armenian Church will observe the Feast of the Assumption of the Holy Mother-of-God, which commemorates how St. Mary at her death was taken up in body and soul, or “assumed,” into heaven. This act of tenderness was performed by Christ many years after his Ascension, as a loving tribute to the mother who bore and raised him.

On this feast day, the “Blessing of Grapes” service takes place immediately after the Divine Liturgy. The service is rich in symbolism and emphasizes the important role of the Virgin Mary in the revelation of God.

At St. Vartan Armenian Cathedral in New York City, Holy Assumption will be celebrated with the Divine Liturgy on Sunday, August 18, beginning at 10:30 a.m.

FAR NEWS
Kids Thriving in FAR’s Childhood Nutrition Project

The life of 4-year-old Gor Terjyan, a kindergartner in Armenia’s Tasghkahovit village, has drastically changed in the year since his school started offering more nutritious meals.

The school has been able to do so thanks to the Fund for Armenian Relief. In 2018, FAR brought the childhood nutrition program it had successfully pioneered in 18 kindergartens in Armenia’s Berd region to a number of schools in Aragatsotn—the province in which Gor lives.

To the delight (and relief) of his parents, Gor has become more active since the meals program went into effect. He’s even put on a healthy amount of weight. “Now, when Gor comes home from kindergarten he’s not starving for a snack,” said his mother Liana. “He’s developed an eating routine and discipline, which I find very healthy.”

BIBLE READING

1 And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. 2 (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) 3 And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. 4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) 5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. 6 And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. 7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.
Luke 2.1-7
