Sunday of the Unjust Steward
Jesus’ parable about an unjust steward who was accused of cheating his master (Luke 16:1-17—the reading for Sunday, March 12) is famous for being difficult to understand. But it gives very concrete clues about what it means to be a “good steward.”
The steward is a figure who comes up in many of Jesus’ parables—a “stock character,” we might say, who would have been very recognizable to Christ’s listeners. What did stewards do, in the time of Jesus? What made them so interesting to our Lord? And what does this occupation tell us about our own obligations to God?

Prayer of the Week
Lord, please keep watch over your faithful people, and protect the holy soil of Artsakh and Armenia—now and always. Foil every aggressor against our homeland. Defend the innocent and voiceless, Lord. Console all those who grieve, and remember those who sacrificed their very lives in your Name. Deliver your faithful children from conflict, and bestow your peace on all mankind.
Look with love, O merciful Father, on the created works of your hand, and grant the camps of the angels to be guardians of our feeble persons. Deliver us from temptation, from the wandering demons of night, that by day and by night we may give you glory incessantly. Amen.

Networking With DC Young Armenians
On Sunday, March 5th, 2023, DMV college students and professionals had the opportunity to meet during the networking event. We extend our appreciation to everyone who attended the first-of-its-kind event, which was a huge success! The panelists comprising some of D.C.'s finest professionals gave thoughtful insights pertaining to their respective careers and inspired the youth to pursue their passions. A Q&A session followed the presentation and the attendees had the chance to network afterward with additional professionals from our community who offered great suggestions and words of wisdom. We are extremely grateful to each and every professional for their participation.
We are thankful to Marianna Yearboro, President of the Armenian Law Students Association at Georgetown University for her initiative to cohost the event with Alex Madajian, representing ACYOA Seniors of St. Mary Church.
For those of you who are interested in joining ACYOA Senior’s group, please contact Alex Madajian: at akexnn1112@gmail.com
Stay tuned for future similar events.

Lenten Period Begins
According to the liturgical calendar of the Armenian Church, the Lenten season has begun on Monday, February 19. This year, at St. Mary, Lenten Services and Discussions will occur every Wednesday. The year's theme is "The Holy Sacraments of the Church and their meaning." We will learn about the Holy Sacraments of the Church and their very real implications on our daily lives. A sacrament is a rite that not only signifies some specific grace but also produces that grace in the soul of the person to whom it is administered. Although everything within the Church is sacramental, there are seven formal sacraments of the Armenian Church which correspond to the different states and situations of a person's life.
The third of the six-week series took place on Wednesday, March 8. Dr. Nareg Seferian spoke about the Sacrament of Holy Communion. He presented its history and relevance to our lives today and spoke about the meaning, importance and necessity of receiving communion.
The day's special guest was Tatul Hakobyan, a reporter and political analyst from Armenia. Mr. Hakobyan spoke about the current situation in Artsakh and Armenia, shared his thoughts and ideas about the present and future of our homeland, and answered questions.
Toward the end of the service and presentation, the parishioners and friends enjoyed fellowship with each other and dinner hosted by St. Mary Choir members.

Making Mahs
This week our devoted team of "Mahs Bakers" gathered at St. Mary Church's kitchen to make mahs. Our special thanks to Lola Pickering, Gulbahar Ozkayan, Janet Arabian, and Takuhi Ozbenian who skillfully mixed the ingredients to make the mahs.
The Armenian word "mahs" means a portion. It is blessed, unconsecrated bread (not Holy Communion) that is given to the faithful to take to those who were unable to share in Holy Communion. It becomes their "portion" of the Badarak. When you receive mahs, extend your right hand so that the small piece of bread can be placed on the back of your hand, and as you receive the mahs say "Pazheen eem Asdvadz haveedyan" (God is my portion forever).

Support the Shnorhali School Lenten Good Deeds
Have you seen the new bulletin board outside the church office? It was constructed by the school children in support of their first Lenten good deed, collecting old blankets and towels for the Montgomery County animal shelter. We ask you to go through your linen closet to see if there are any towels or blankets that you might be able to part with (maybe they aren't being used or have seen a lot of use!). The donation receptacle will be underneath the bulletin board during Lent.
The second Lenten Good Deed is for our older students (4th grade through high school). We will be asking for donations of sandwich materials that the students will assemble into sandwiches to be donated to the homeless through an organization in DC called Martha's Table. If you would like to donate sandwich materials, please use the following Signup Genius https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c094eafaf2da64-lenten#/ We would like to have all sandwich materials brought to school on Sunday, March 19.

Special Gift for St. Mary Gift Shop
St. Mary gift shop is offering limited numbers of imported bottles of medieval Armenian health elixirs formulated from ancient manuscripts deciphered at the Matendaran Museum of Ancient Armenian Manuscripts. These elixirs are made in Armenia by Armen Sahakyan, a pharmacologist and botanical scholar who has been working at the Matenadaran Museum for the last several decades. A trained medical doctor ordained a deacon in 1997, Sahakyan has dedicated his life to the maintenance of Armenia’s sacred botanical traditions.
The three different batches available at our gift shop (Royal Elixir, Arates Elixir and Arates Tonic) are made from a codified recipe of medieval Armenian medicine, using a special distillation process. They contain medicinal and aromatic plants, known for their healing properties. Through the distillation and aging process alcohol is created, so think of them as perhaps Armenia’s first (healthy) cognac!
The supplies are limited and each bottle is numbered, including the batch and year of production. All of the bottles were donated to St Mary Church, so 100% of the proceeds will go to the St Mary Endowment Fund, with a portion also going to support Armenian clergy serving in Artsakh.

“Full of Grace”: Honoring the Legacy of St. Nersess Shnorhali
Eight hundred fifty years after his death, his influence is still felt every day in the Armenian Church.
The soaring hymns that praise God, the sensitive prayers that beg His forgiveness, the policies of mercy and outreach that guide the operations of the church—all bear the mark of St. Nersess Shnorhali (1102-1173).
His title Shnorhali means “full of grace”—and the divine gifts that flowed from Nersess Pahlavuni left behind a legacy of devotional poetry and music unparalleled in Christian history. In his later years, when he ascended to the throne of Catholicos, Nersess revitalized the church’s charitable ministry and conceived an ambitious plan to make peace among the fractured centers of Christendom. But these were also years of solitude and struggle, as his hopes for a more unified church were opposed from without and within.
This year marks the 850th anniversary of St. Nersess Shnorhali’s death, and the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin has launched a year-long commemoration of his life and work. In a Pontifical Encyclical issued this week, His Holiness Karekin II, the Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians called on the worldwide Armenian Church to honor the saint’s legacy throughout 2023.
“Shnorhali’s entire life was focused on the glorification of God, and the urgent mission of leading the hearts of the people to Him,” the Catholicos wrote. “We invite our entire church to commemorate Shnorhali’s eternal memory during this 850th anniversary year. Through conferences, publications, and celebrations, as well as in national and ecumenical circles, let us appreciate anew the eternally relevant message of this great teacher of the Christian faith, and benefactor of our national-religious life.”
A number of commemorative events will be taking place at the Mother See in Armenia. Also, the Armenian and Roman Catholic churches are collaborating on a major international conference, to take place in Rome this autumn.
The Eastern Diocese and its parishes will also mark the anniversary; look for details in the coming weeks. In the meantime, watch an episode of “Living Voices”—the Eastern Diocese’s video series exploring great figures of the Armenian Church—that brings to life the story of St. Nersess through dramatic re-enactments and a stirring narration.

Announcements from the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin
Last week at the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, the Supreme Spiritual Council concluded its winter meeting, presided over by His Holiness Karekin II, the Catholicos of All Armenians. With its adjournment on March 3, the Council released its report, which includes announcements that will be greeted as welcome news to the entire Armenian Church—and especially to the faithful of the Eastern Diocese.
First, the re-opening of the Mother Cathedral of Holy Etchmiadzin, following its extensive restoration, will take place in the autumn of this year. Celebratory ceremonies on September 30 through October 3, at the Mother See in Armenia, will culminate in the Blessing of the Holy Muron. This will be the first time the Muron Blessing has taken place since 2015.
Second, on October 8, His Holiness Karekin II will lead an Episcopal Consecration service, wherein the Catholicos will ordain several new bishops for the Armenian Church.
The Eastern Diocese is very happy to announce that our Primate, Fr. Mesrop Parsamyan, will be consecrated as a bishop on that occasion. We greet this joyous news with gratitude to His Holiness, prayerful enthusiasm for our Diocese, and loving congratulations to Fr. Mesrop.
Finally, on Saturday, October 14, the faithful of our Diocese will be able to welcome our newly-ordained Primate back home, when he celebrates his first episcopal badarak at St. Vartan Armenian Cathedral in New York.
With these dates now officially confirmed by the Holy See, the Diocese will be organizing a pilgrimage to Armenia, so its faithful can take part in the historic, holy ceremonies in the fall. And arrangements are being made for faithful throughout the Diocese to come as pilgrims to St. Vartan Cathedral in New York, for the joyous episcopal badarak on October 14.
Details on these events will be announced in the near future. Until then, we offer prayers of thanks to our Lord, for guiding us to these bright developments, and for shining His holy light on our people always.

An Aspiring Journalist Pursues Her Dream, on a FAR Scholarship
Ani Tamrazyan believes she has found her dream profession in journalism, through which she wants to focus on human rights and law. “The Fund for Armenian Relief has played a big role in this,” she said.
As a child, Ani wanted to become a doctor. But in high school, she had a change of heart. “I liked how journalism deals with human lives and values,” said Ani, now 22, who noted that one of her first journalistic projects touched on environmental problems of her native village in Haghartsin, Armenia.
After receiving her Bachelor’s degree at Yerevan State University, Ani initially started working, putting her dream of earning a Master’s degree on hold—until she learned about FAR’s “Ester Ajemian Scholarship” program. She applied immediately. “My parents could not afford more tuition, and I hadn’t earned a penny back then. I decided that I would go for a Master’s degree if I got a scholarship. And I did,” she said with pride.
Now, Ani is studying again at Yerevan State and is deeply immersed in several reporting projects. She also works part-time at a local independent media station called Factor TV, where she tackles challenging subjects in her stories, such as the rights of Artsakh’s displaced.
The “Esther Ajemian Scholarship” is one of many scholarships offered through FAR. Empowering Armenia’s youth of today, and enabling them to accomplish their dreams through education, is an ongoing part of FAR’s mission.

16 Then Jesus[a] said to the disciples, “There was a rich man who had a manager, and charges were brought to him that this man was squandering his property. 2 So he summoned him and said to him, ‘What is this that I hear about you? Give me an accounting of your management, because you cannot be my manager any longer.’ 3 Then the manager said to himself, ‘What will I do, now that my master is taking the position away from me? I am not strong enough to dig, and I am ashamed to beg. 4 I have decided what to do so that, when I am dismissed as manager, people may welcome me into their homes.’ 5 So, summoning his master’s debtors one by one, he asked the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ 6 He answered, ‘A hundred jugs of olive oil.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bill, sit down quickly, and make it fifty.’ 7 Then he asked another, ‘And how much do you owe?’ He replied, ‘A hundred containers of wheat.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bill and make it eighty.’ 8 And his master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly; for the children of this age are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than are the children of light. 9 And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of dishonest wealth so that when it is gone, they may welcome you into the eternal homes.10 “Whoever is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much, and whoever is dishonest in a very little is dishonest also in much. 11 If then you have not been faithful with the dishonest wealth, who will entrust to you the true riches? 12 And if you have not been faithful with what belongs to another, who will give you what is your own? 13 No slave can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.”14 The Pharisees, who were lovers of money, heard all this, and they ridiculed him. 15 So he said to them, “You are those who justify yourselves in the sight of others, but God knows your hearts; for what is prized by human beings is an abomination in the sight of God.16 “The law and the prophets were in effect until John came; since then the good news of the kingdom of God is proclaimed, and everyone tries to enter it by force. 17 But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away, than for one stroke of a letter in the law to be dropped.18 “Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and whoever marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery.19 “There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. 20 And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, 21 who longed to satisfy his hunger with what fell from the rich man’s table; even the dogs would come and lick his sores. 22 The poor man died and was carried away by the angels to be with Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 In Hades, where he was being tormented, he looked up and saw Abraham far away with Lazarus by his side. 24 He called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in agony in these flames.’ 25 But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that during your lifetime you received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in agony. 26 Besides all this, between you and us a great chasm has been fixed so that those who might want to pass from here to you cannot do so, and no one can cross from there to us.’ 27 He said, ‘Then, father, I beg you to send him to my father’s house— 28 for I have five brothers—that he may warn them so that they will not also come into this place of torment.’ 29 Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the prophets; they should listen to them.’ 30 He said, ‘No, father Abraham; but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ 31 He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’”
