TOP STORY

Beginnings and Endings: The Sunday of the Advent

Early in our journey through Great Lent, we observed the Sunday of the Expulsion, which retold the story of mankind's first disobedience, our exile from paradise, and the beginning of humanity's long history of separation from God.

In a nice expression of symmetry and resolution, Lent concludes with the Sunday of the Advent (March 17): that is, the coming of Jesus Christ, through whom God entered human history and restored what had been lost in exile from Eden.

The Advent calls to mind the birth and revelation of our Savior, his subsequent sacrifice for mankind, and his victory over sin and death. As the last Sunday of Lent, this day is especially devoted to the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, reminding us that he is our eternal Lord and King. Just as everything once began with God, so too will everything one day end with Him.

Please join us every Wednesday at 7:00 PM throughout Lent for Spiritual Journey To Prepare for Holy Resurrection: Lenten Worship Service, Spiritual Discussion, and Lenten Dinner. To see the 2025 Lenten Series flyer, Click Here.

Greeters Ministry Ushers Workshop – March 30

On Sunday, March 30, following the Divine Liturgy, St. Mary Armenian Church held a Greeters Ministry Ushers Workshop led by Anna Seferian. The 90-minute training brought together our dedicated team of Ushers to review the purpose, tasks, and responsibilities of this important ministry.

During the session, ushers discussed current challenges and opportunities, shared best practices, and strengthened our commitment to welcoming parishioners and visitors with warmth and grace.

We thank Anna for leading the workshop and all participants for their enthusiastic engagement and service to our parish community.

Mid-Lenten (Meechink) Luncheon – A Joyful Tradition

On Sunday, March 30, following the Divine Liturgy, the St. Mary Women’s Guild hosted a lavish Mid-Lenten (Meechink) Luncheon in celebration of the halfway point of Great Lent. Meechink is a cherished tradition in the Armenian Church, reminding us of the spiritual progress we have made and encouraging us to persevere with renewed strength and hope as we journey toward Holy Week and Easter.

Parishioners gathered in fellowship to enjoy a beautifully prepared Lenten meal, lovingly made by the members of the Women’s Guild. The afternoon was filled with warmth, community spirit, and gratitude.

We thank the Women’s Guild for their dedicated work in making this special event both meaningful and memorable.

Acolyte Training Session – March 30

On Sunday, March 30, following the Divine Liturgy, our altar servers gathered once again for a productive and spiritually enriching Acolyte Training session led by Fr. Hovsep Karapetyan. As part of St. Mary Armenian Church’s ongoing Acolyte Training Program, these sessions are designed to prepare our young altar servers for ordination as acolytes, equipping them with both knowledge and a deeper spiritual connection to their church.

This week’s session focused on the duties and meaning of the acolyte, the importance of their role in the Divine Liturgy, and the significance of ordination. The group also received instruction on the liturgical books used in the Armenian Church, learning how to handle them with reverence and understand their purpose in the flow of the worship service.

Through this training, our altar servers gain hands-on experience and grow in their understanding of the Church’s rich traditions. Their dedication and enthusiasm are a true blessing to our parish community and a testament to the bright future of our Church.

For more information about the Acolyte Training Program, please contact St. Mary Armenian Church.

Lenten Journey: The Healing Power of Forgiveness

On Wednesday, April 2, St. Mary Armenian Church continued its Lenten Journey 2025 series with an evening centered on the theme of “Forgive, and You Will Be Forgiven” (Luke 6:37).

Following the Rest Hour service, Dr. Anna Seferian delivered an inspiring reflection on the Christian understanding of forgiveness, drawing from Scripture, the teachings of the Church, and real-life struggles with offering grace. She reminded us that forgiveness is not just a personal virtue but a central command of Christ, modeled by His own boundless mercy. She encouraged the present to reflect on the barriers that often hold us back—pride, fear, and the desire for justice—and instead embrace forgiveness as a process rooted in humility, patience, and love. She also offered practical, faith-based steps to help us move toward reconciliation, inspired by both biblical guidance and Armenian Christian tradition.

After the presentation, parishioners gathered for a Lenten dinner generously sponsored by the parents and teachers of St. Mary Shnorhali School. The evening continued with a special presentation by Vardan Vardanyan, who shared valuable insights into the current challenges and opportunities in the government job sector. His practical tips and guidance on how to navigate the hiring process offered attendees timely and helpful resources. In addition, Andre' Sahakyan offered helpful advice on how to manage financial resources during times of crisis.

Supporting St. Vartan Cathedral – A Lenten Good Deed Project by Our Shnorhali Students

As we journey through the season of Lent, our Shnorhali School students are embracing the spirit of faith, generosity, and community through their annual Lenten Good Deed Project. This year, they are dedicating their efforts to support our Mother Cathedral, St. Vartan, which is in urgent need of restoration. Time and the elements have taken their toll, and it is now our turn to ensure that this cherished symbol of strength and hope remains a beacon for generations to come.

Each student has received a collection box to take home, encouraging them to practice almsgiving—a vital Lenten tradition—by making small contributions throughout the season. More than just a fundraiser, this project teaches our children the values of giving, compassion, and stewardship. By participating, they develop a deeper sense of belonging, ownership, and connection to our Mother Cathedral in New York, understanding that their support plays a role in preserving our spiritual heritage.

We invite our entire parish community to encourage and support our students in this meaningful endeavor. Collection boxes will be returned to the school by Sunday, April 13th. Let us come together in the true spirit of Lent, ensuring that our faith and traditions continue to thrive.

DIOCESAN & OTHER NEWS

The Annunciation: “With God, Nothing is Impossible”

On Monday, April 7, the worldwide Armenian Church will celebrate the Annunciation to the Virgin Mary: one of five feasts devoted to the blessed mother of Jesus Christ. It concerns the defining event of Mary’s life: her realization that she had been chosen by God to be the mother of His Son.

The announcement came by way of the angel Gabriel, and it troubled Mary at first. But Gabriel tried to allay her fears: “Behold!” he told her. “You shall conceive and bring forth a son, and call his name Jesus. He shall be great, and be called the Son of the Highest … and of his kingdom there shall be no end.”

In her youthful sweetness and innocence, Mary asked the angel how this could ever come to pass. Gabriel’s reply—“With God, nothing shall be impossible”—is one of our greatest expressions of Christian hope.

And Mary’s reply is equally wonderful, as an example for all people who sense God’s hand in their lives: “Behold the handmaid of the Lord. Let it be unto me according to thy word.”

Nine months later, her son was born—and with him, the hope of the world’s redemption. It is worth noting that the Armenian Church’s fixed date for the Annunciation, April 7, comes exactly nine months before the Armenian Church’s fixed date for the celebration of Christmas, January 6.

The entire touching story is told in Luke 1:26-38. Click the link to read more about St. Mary.

FAR Celebrates Achievement in Mathematics Education

In 2022, the Fund for Armenian Relief’s Yervant Terzian Armenian National Science and Education Fund (ANSEF) partnered with the Armenian Society of Fellows to establish the innovative “Math Honors Program”: a rigorous course of study that finds talented students in Armenia, and equips them with advanced mathematical skills, in preparation for future academic and professional success.

Since its launch, the number of students successfully completing the Math Honors Program has doubled, bringing more young Armenians into the sciences and helping them deepen their knowledge of advanced mathematics. The program has also grown in prestige, with its graduates representing Armenia in international math and science Olympiads.

Taught online by Armenian American professors based in the U.S., the program also benefits from local teaching assistants in Armenia who help guide students through coursework and challenging exams. Graduates (like the recent ones shown here) receive special certification for having completed the program.

Supporting these and other educational efforts of the Fund for Armenian Relief will help to inspire and nurture Armenia’s next generation of innovators. Learn more on FAR’s website.

Thanks to our Recycling Committee for their work in sorting and bringing home the recyclables every Sunday, especially during our recent Food Festival. What has been discouraging, though, is that people continue to throw half-full coffee cups and food into the container, which makes it very messy for us. Please put only the following in the container:

Empty plastic bottles

Empty aluminum cans

Empty glass bottles

Nothing else!!

No paper, no plastic silverware, no coffee cups, no paper plates, no food. We are trying to keep things simple.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Special Gift for St. Mary Gift Shop

St. Mary gift shop is offering limited numbers of imported bottles of medieval Armenian health elixirs formulated from ancient manuscripts deciphered at the Matendaran Museum of Ancient Armenian Manuscripts. These elixirs are made in Armenia by Armen Sahakyan, a pharmacologist and botanical scholar who has been working at the Matenadaran Museum for the last several decades. A trained medical doctor ordained a deacon in 1997, Sahakyan has dedicated his life to the maintenance of Armenia’s sacred botanical traditions.

The three different batches available at our gift shop (Royal Elixir, Arates Elixir and Arates Tonic) are made from a codified recipe of medieval Armenian medicine, using a special distillation process. They contain medicinal and aromatic plants, known for their healing properties. Through the distillation and aging process alcohol is created, so think of them as perhaps Armenia’s first (healthy) cognac!

The supplies are limited and each bottle is numbered, including the batch and year of production. All of the bottles were donated to St Mary Church, so 100% of the proceeds will go to the St Mary Endowment Fund, with a portion also going to support Armenian clergy serving in Artsakh.

BIBLE READING

34 But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. 35 And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. 36 "Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?" 37 And he said to him, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.".

41 Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question, 42 sayings, "What do you think about Christ? Whose son is he?" They said to him, "The son of David." 43 He said to them, "How is it then that David, in the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying, 44 "'The Lord said to my Lord, "Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet"'?

45 If then David calls him Lord, how is he his son?" 46 And no one was able to answer him a word, nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions.

23 Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, 2 "The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses' seat, 3 so do and observe whatever they tell you, but not the works they do. For they preach but do not practice.4 They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on people's shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to move them with their fingers. 5 They do all their deeds to be seen by others. For they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long, 6 and they love the place of honor at feasts and the best seats in the synagogues 7 and greetings in the marketplaces and being called rabbi by others. 8 But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all brothers.9 And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven. 10 Neither be called instructors, for you have one instructor, the Christ. 11 The greatest among you shall be your servant. 12 Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.

Matthew 22:34-23:39
