Manifestation, Circumcision and Naming of our Lord Jesus Christ
Eight days after the Holy Nativity of our Lord, we celebrate His Circumcision, one of the Feasts of the Lord, on which - in accordance with Hebrew tradition - He received the name "Jesus": "And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the Child, His name was called Jesus, which was so named of the Angel before He was conceived in the womb" (Luke 2:21).
The name "Jesus" comes from Joshua or Yehoshuah, the Hebrew word for "savior" or "deliverer." Devotion to the Holy Name can be traced back to Paul's Letter to the Philippians, which says God highly exalted Jesus "and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth" (Philippians 2:9-11). The true descendants of the Patriarch Abraham were separated from the other nations by the sign of circumcision (a prefigurement of Baptism: "the circumcision made without hands" [Colossians 2:1]) and thereby became members of the God-ruled community of the Old Testament; that is, through circumcision, they entered among the chosen People of God. Christ was now "made under the law," being conformed to the prescriptions of the Mosaic Law (Galatians 4:4) and "fulfilling" the Law (Matthew 3:15), in order to elevate the Church of the Law into a Church of Grace, into a new "Israel of God" (cf Galatians 6:16), into a Theanthropic organism-into His Body.
The Circumcision of our Lord inspired the Holy Church to institute a beautiful and deeply symbolic custom for the newborn children of Christians to be baptized eight days after birth.

Prayer of the week
Look with love, O merciful Father, on the created works of your hand, and grant the camps of the angels to be guardians of our feeble persons. Deliver us from temptation, from the wandering demons of night, that by day and by night we may give you glory incessantly.
Keep watch over your faithful people, strengthen those fleeing persecution, and protect the holy soil of Armenia.
Make us equal to your true worshipers, who worship you in spirit and in truth; for to the most-holy Trinity is befitting glory, dominion, and honor, now and always. Amen.

Feast of Nativity and Theophany Celebrated at St. Mary
St. Mary Armenian Church observed the Feast of the Nativity and Theophany of our Lord on January 5 and 6, marking one of the principal feasts of the Armenian Church’s liturgical year. The celebration began on the evening of January 5 with scriptural readings offered by the students of St. Mary Shnorhali School, followed by the Nativity Eve Badarak, celebrated by Der Hovsep. The service invited the faithful into prayerful reflection on the mystery of Christ’s birth and manifestation. It concluded with the traditional Home Blessing, affirming Christ’s presence in the life of the family and household. A fellowship gathering hosted by the Parish Council followed the service, providing an opportunity for parishioners to gather and greet one another.
On January 6, the community assembled again to celebrate the Feast of the Nativity and Baptism of our Lord. The Blessing of the Water Service formed the central rite of the day, commemorating Christ’s baptism and His revelation as the Son of God. The role of Godfather was fulfilled this year by Aram Seropian, the son of Andrew and Armine Seropian, one of the youngest members of the parish.
Following the service, the St. Mary Avak Society hosted a Nativity Luncheon for the parish community. Special thanks are due to the Avak Society organizing committee—Mary Shafakian, Takuhi Haladjian, and Eva Shafakian—as well as to the volunteers and supporters whose efforts made the gathering possible. The luncheon featured a variety of traditional Armenian dishes, including rice pilaf, turkey, lula kebab, eggplant tava, cheese boreg, sweet potatoes, cabbage pickles, turshy, and anoush abour.
Throughout these two days, the faithful gathered in worship and fellowship, marking the Feast of the Nativity and Theophany with the traditional proclamation:
“To you and us good news! Tzez yev mez Medz Avedis!
Christ is born and revealed. Kristos tsnav yev haytnetsav.”

Shnorhali Students Proclaim Scripture on the Eve of the Nativity and Theophany
On the evening of the Eve of the Theophany and Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, as our church was filled with prayerful anticipation, Shnorhali School students were entrusted with a deeply meaningful role during the Patarag, proclaiming passages from the Holy Scriptures.
Prepared with care and reverence, our students approached the altar and proclaimed God’s Word, becoming active participants in the sacred life of the Armenian Church. Their voices carried the timeless message of Christ’s birth and revelation, reminding all present that faith is not merely taught - it is lived, witnessed, and faithfully passed from one generation to the next.
This experience was far more than a public reading; it was a moment of spiritual growth and responsibility. Through their participation in the Patarag, our students bridged classroom learning with worship, deepening their connection to the Church, strengthening their faith, and affirming their Armenian Christian identity.
We are deeply proud of our students for their dedication, composure, and reverent presence, and we extend our sincere gratitude to our families and clergy for their guidance and support throughout this preparation. Moments such as these reflect the heart of Shnorhali School’s mission: to nurture faith, tradition, and service in the lives of our children.

Shnorhali School’s Christmas Handes
This year, Shnorhali School’s Christmas Handes was a heartfelt celebration of the true meaning of Christmas, shared through the voices and joyful spirit of our students as they proclaimed the good news of Christ’s birth. Our Kindergarten class opened the program with sweet performances of Nor Darva Handes and Tonatsar, setting a tone of joy and celebration.
From there, the rest of our Shnorhali students led the audience on a meaningful journey back to Bethlehem through song and storytelling, gently inviting us to reflect on the humility, hope, and love revealed in the Nativity. We are so proud of the time, effort, and dedication our students poured into this performance and deeply grateful to our teachers and volunteers whose care and service made this beautiful celebration possible.

“A Light Has Dawned”: Catholicos Karekin II’s Christmas Sermon
His Holiness Karekin II delivered a stirring message on Armenian Christmas, January 6, reassuring the faithful that even in the darkest of times, Christ is the unconquerable light who brings hope to the world.
He spoke during the Pontifical Divine Liturgy marking the Feast of the Nativity and Theophany of Christ, at the Mother Cathedral of Holy Etchmiadzin.
In a message directed to Armenian faithful throughout the world, His Holiness assured listeners: “Today, as ever, the angelic good tidings of the Holy Nativity and the light of the Bethlehem star are an invitation to all people to transform life through trust in God…. Heeding this heavenly message, let us live and act with the Lord, offering zealous and wholehearted service in all spheres, for the sake of a secure and prosperous personal, family, and national life.”
He went on: “The Lord is ever faithful in saving fallen humanity from error and downfall; for God does not desire the death of the sinner, but that he turn from his evil ways and live, as the prophet Ezekiel proclaimed (Ez 18:23). In Christ, the path of resurrection and renewal through faith is opened before us…. By the saving power of the Son of God, oppression, death, and destruction all retreat. Through the Holy Nativity of the Savior, light dawns upon those who sit in the shadow of death.”
Following the Christmas Divine Liturgy, His Holiness led the “Blessing of Water” ceremony, and then spent time among the great crowd of worshippers who had come to receive his blessing.

A Statement on the Unfolding Events in Armenia
In December, the Primate and Diocesan Council of the Eastern Diocese issued a statement expressing serious concerns “about the recent events unfolding in Armenia, involving the escalating situation between the State and the Church.”
“These two foundational institutions,” reads the statement, “together with the Armenian Diaspora, are essential to our survival as Armenians.
“We call for restraint and national unity. The Constitution of the Republic of Armenia and its democratic process must be respected, as should the self-governance, policies, and protocols of the global Armenian Apostolic Church—protocols that have stood as consistent pillars of the Armenian Church throughout its history.
“At this critical moment for the Armenian nation—in a time of geopolitical uncertainty, and in full view of the world—we need all our national institutions to remain strong and able to play their respective, vital roles. Our government must steer our young democracy through the complexities of balancing security, reform, and societal harmony. Our Church must continue to play its vital and historic role in safeguarding our identity, heritage, and faith.”
The statement continues: “In times such as these, our hope and strength rest in Christ and in the unity of our Church. We turn to prayer, trusting that the Lord will grant peace, healing, and wisdom to all His children. As the psalmist proclaims: ‘Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me’ (Psalm 50:15).”

Worldwide Week of Prayer to Focus on Armenian Church (Jan. 29, NYC)
Every year, the worldwide Christian ecumenical community holds “A Week of Prayer for Christian Unity.” January 2026 will mark the 58th Week of Prayer, which will go forward January 18-25, 2026, under the Biblical theme “One Body, One Spirit, One Hope.”
For 2026, the Week of Prayer will have a special focus on the Armenian Church. Services will reflect the spirituality of the Armenian Christian tradition, incorporating prayers and hymns by St. Nersess Shnorhali and St. Gregory of Narek. Liturgical resources developed by the World Council of Churches with a committee of Armenian clergy and liturgical scholars are being utilized by churches across the globe during the Week of Prayer.
In New York City, the event will culminate in an ecumenical prayer service at the beautiful Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral (337 East 74th Street, in Manhattan). Archbishop Elpidophorus of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese will host church leaders on the evening of Thursday, January 29, at 6:30 p.m.
Diocesan Primate Bishop Mesrop Parsamyan along with many Armenian clergy will be part of the occasion, as our sister churches pray for the wellbeing of the Armenian Church and nation, and for Christian unity, using the words and music of the Armenian tradition.

RECYCLING PROGRAM NEWS
Thanks to our Recycling Committee for their work in sorting and bringing home the recyclables every Sunday, especially during our recent Food Festival. What has been discouraging, though, is that people continue to throw half-full coffee cups and food into the container, which makes it very messy for us. Please put only the following in the container:
Empty plastic bottles
Empty aluminum cans
Empty glass bottles
Nothing else!!
No paper, no plastic silverware, no coffee cups, no paper plates, no food. We are trying to keep things simple.

Special Gift for St. Mary Gift Shop
St. Mary gift shop is offering limited numbers of imported bottles of medieval Armenian health elixirs formulated from ancient manuscripts deciphered at the Matendaran Museum of Ancient Armenian Manuscripts. These elixirs are made in Armenia by Armen Sahakyan, a pharmacologist and botanical scholar who has been working at the Matenadaran Museum for the last several decades. A trained medical doctor ordained a deacon in 1997, Sahakyan has dedicated his life to the maintenance of Armenia’s sacred botanical traditions.
The three different batches available at our gift shop (Royal Elixir, Arates Elixir and Arates Tonic) are made from a codified recipe of medieval Armenian medicine, using a special distillation process. They contain medicinal and aromatic plants, known for their healing properties. Through the distillation and aging process alcohol is created, so think of them as perhaps Armenia’s first (healthy) cognac!
The supplies are limited and each bottle is numbered, including the batch and year of production. All of the bottles were donated to St Mary Church, so 100% of the proceeds will go to the St Mary Endowment Fund, with a portion also going to support Armenian clergy serving in Artsakh.

We are initiating a new form of ministry at St. Mary Armenian Church. For parishioners who would like to make an electronic prayer request, they can do so by Clicking Here
A group of volunteers will receive the request and pray at their earliest convenience. Additionally, a new physical prayer request box will be placed at the entrance of St. Mary Armenian Church with blank forms that anyone can fill out and drop in the box. These requests will be retrieved weekly and delivered to the members of the volunteer prayer group. If you would like to become one of the volunteers of the Prayer Group please email us.

11 Now a man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2 (This Mary, whose brother Lazarus now lay sick, was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair.) 3 So the sisters sent word to Jesus, “Lord, the one you love is sick.” 4 When he heard this, Jesus said, “This sickness will not end in death. Do you believe this?” 27 “Yes, Lord,” she replied, “I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.” 28 After she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary aside. “The Teacher is here,” she said, “and is asking for you.” 29 When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him. 30 Now Jesus had not yet entered the village but was still at the place where Martha had met him. 31 When the Jews who had been with Mary in the house, comforting her, noticed how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to mourn there. 32 When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” 33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. 34 “Where have you laid him?” he asked. “Come and see, Lord,” they replied.35 Jesus wept.36 Then the Jews said, “See how he loved him!” 37 But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?” 38 Jesus, once more deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance. 39 “Take away the stone,” he said. “But, Lord,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man, “by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days.” 40 Then Jesus said, “Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?” 41 So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. 42 I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.” 43 When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” 44 The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”45 Therefore, many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary, and had seen what Jesus did believed in him. 46 But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.

1Մարիամի եւ անոր քրոջ՝ Մարթայի գիւղէն, Բեթանիայէն, Ղազարոս անունով մէկը հիւանդ էր: 2(Ասիկա այն Մարիամն էր՝ որ օծեց Տէրը օծանելիքով ու սրբեց անոր ոտքերը իր մազերով. անոր եղբայրը՝ Ղազարոս հիւանդ էր:) 3Ուրեմն իր քոյրերը մարդ ղրկեցին անոր եւ ըսին. «Տէ՛ր, ահա՛ ան՝ որ դուն կը սիրես՝ հիւանդ է»: 4Երբ Յիսուս լսեց՝ ըսաւ. «Այս հիւանդութիւնը մահուան համար չէ՝ հապա Աստուծոյ փառքին համար, որպէսզի Աստուծոյ Որդին փառաւորուի անով»: 5Արդարեւ Յիսուս կը սիրէր Մարթան եւ անոր քոյրն ու Ղազարոսը: 6Ուրեմն երբ լսեց թէ հիւանդ է, եղած տեղը երկու օր ալ մնաց. 7յետոյ ըսաւ աշակերտներուն. «Եկէ՛ք, դարձեալ Հրէաստան երթանք»: 8Աշակերտները ըսին իրեն. «Ռաբբի՛, Հրեաները հի՛մա կը փնտռէին քեզ՝ քարկոծելու համար, ու դա՞րձեալ հոն կ՚երթաս»: 9Յիսուս պատասխանեց. «Օրը տասներկու ժամ չէ՞: Եթէ մէկը ցերեկը քալէ՝ չի սայթաքիր, որովհետեւ այս աշխարհի լոյսը կը տեսնէ. 10բայց եթէ մէկը գիշերուան մէջ քալէ՝ կը սայթաքի, որովհետեւ իրեն հետ լոյս չկայ»: 11Այս բաները խօսելէ ետք՝ ըսաւ անոնց. «Ղազարոս՝ մեր բարեկամը՝ քնացած է. բայց կ՚երթա՛մ՝ որպէսզի արթնցնեմ զայն»: 12Իր աշակերտները ըսին. «Տէ՛ր, եթէ քնացած է՝ պիտի առողջանայ»: 13Յիսուս կը խօսէր անոր մահուան մասին, բայց անոնք կը կարծէին թէ քունո՛վ հանգստանալուն մասին կը խօսէր: 14Այն ատեն Յիսուս բացորոշապէս ըսաւ անոնց. «Ղազարոս մեռաւ. 15ու ես ուրախ եմ ձեզի համար՝ որ հոն չէի, որպէսզի դուք հաւատաք. բայց եկէ՛ք՝ երթանք անոր»: 16Թովմաս, որ Երկուորեակ կը կոչուէր, ըսաւ աշակերտակիցներուն. «Մե՛նք ալ երթանք՝ որպէսզի մեռնինք անոր հետ»: 17Երբ Յիսուս եկաւ, գտաւ որ ան արդէն չորս օրէ ի վեր գերեզմանը դրուած էր: 18Բեթանիա Երուսաղէմի մօտ էր՝ տասնհինգ ասպարէզի չափ. 19եւ Հրեաներէն շատեր եկած էին Մարթայի ու Մարիամի, որպէսզի սփոփեն զանոնք իրենց եղբօր համար: 20Ուստի՝ երբ Մարթա լսեց թէ Յիսուս կու գայ՝ գնաց դիմաւորելու զայն. բայց Մարիամ նստած էր տան մէջ: 21Մարթա ըսաւ Յիսուսի. «Տէ՛ր, եթէ հոս ըլլայիր, եղբայրս չէր մեռներ. 22Բայց գիտեմ թէ հիմա ալ՝ դուն ի՛նչ որ խնդրես Աստուծմէ, Աստուած պիտի տայ քեզի»: 23Յիսուս ըսաւ անոր. «Եղբայրդ յարութիւն պիտի առնէ»: 24Մարթա ըսաւ անոր. «Գիտեմ թէ յարութեան ժամանակը՝ վերջին օրը՝ յարութիւն պիտի առնէ»: 25Յիսուս ըսաւ անոր. «Ե՛ս եմ յարութիւնն ու կեանքը: Ա՛ն որ կը հաւատայ ինծի, թէեւ մեռնի՝ պիտի ապրի. 26Եւ ո՛վ որ կ՚ապրի եւ կը հաւատայ ինծի, յաւիտեա՛ն պիտի չմեռնի: Դուն կը հաւատա՞ս ասոր»: 27Ըսաւ անոր. «Այո՛, Տէ՛ր, ես կը հաւատամ թէ դո՛ւն ես Քրիստոսը՝ Աստուծոյ Որդին, որ աշխարհ պիտի գար»: 28Երբ ըսաւ ասիկա՝ գնաց, ու ծածկաբար կանչեց իր քոյրը՝ Մարիամը, ըսելով. «Վարդապետը եկած է, եւ կը կանչէ քեզ»: 29Երբ ան լսեց՝ շուտով ոտքի ելաւ ու եկաւ անոր քով: 30Յիսուս դեռ եկած չէր գիւղը, հապա այն տեղն էր՝ ուր Մարթա դիմաւորեց զինք: 31Բայց Հրեաները, որ տան մէջ էին անոր հետ եւ կը սփոփէին զայն, երբ տեսան թէ Մարիամ շուտով կանգնեցաւ ու գնաց, իրենք ալ հետեւեցան անոր՝ ըսելով. «Գերեզմանը կ՚երթայ՝ որպէսզի հոն լայ»: 32Իսկ Մարիամ, երբ հասաւ Յիսուսի եղած տեղը ու տեսաւ զինք, անոր ոտքը իյնալով՝ ըսաւ անոր. «Տէ՛ր, եթէ հոս ըլլայիր՝ եղբայրս չէր մեռներ»: 33Ուրեմն երբ Յիսուս տեսաւ զայն՝ որ կու լար, եւ անոր հետ եկող Հրեաները՝ որոնք կու լային, սրդողեցաւ իր հոգիին մէջ ու վրդովեցաւ, 34եւ ըսաւ. «Ո՞ւր դրած էք զայն»: Ըսին իրեն. «Տէ՛ր, եկո՛ւր ու տե՛ս»: 35Յիսուս լացաւ: 36Ուստի Հրեաները կ՚ըսէին. «Նայեցէ՛ք, ո՜րչափ կը սիրէր զայն»: 37Անոնցմէ ոմանք ալ կ՚ըսէին. «Ասիկա՝ որ կոյրին աչքերը բացաւ, չէ՞ր կրնար այնպէս ընել՝ որ ա՛յս ալ չմեռնէր»: 38Ուրեմն Յիսուս՝ դարձեալ սրդողելով ինքնիր մէջ՝ գնաց գերեզման. ան քարայր մըն էր, որուն վրայ քար մը դրուած էր: 39Յիսուս ըսաւ. «Վերցուցէ՛ք այդ քարը»: Մեռելին քոյրը՝ Մարթա՝ ըսաւ անոր. «Տէ՛ր, արդէն նեխած պիտի ըլլայ, որովհետեւ չորս օրուան է»: 40Յիսուս ըսաւ անոր. «Քեզի չըսի՞ թէ պիտի տեսնես Աստուծոյ փառքը՝ եթէ հաւատաս»: 41Ուստի վերցուցին քարը: Յիսուս բարձրացուց իր աչքերը եւ ըսաւ. «Հա՛յր, շնորհակալ եմ քեզմէ՝ որ լսեցիր զիս: 42Ու ես գիտէի թէ ամէն ատեն կը լսես զիս. բայց ըսի շուրջս կայնող բազմութեան համար, որպէսզի հաւատան թէ դո՛ւն ղրկեցիր զիս»: 43Ասիկա ըսելէն ետք՝ բարձրաձայն պոռաց. «Ղազարո՛ս, դո՛ւրս եկուր»: 44Մեռելն ալ ելաւ՝ ոտքերն ու ձեռքերը պատանքով կապուած, եւ դէմքը՝ վարշամակով պատուած: Յիսուս ըսաւ անոնց. «Արձակեցէ՛ք զինք, ու թո՛յլ տուէք որ երթայ»: 45Հրեաներէն շատեր՝ որ եկած էին Մարիամի քով, երբ տեսան Յիսուսի ըրածը՝ հաւատացին իրեն: 46Բայց անոնցմէ ոմանք գացին Փարիսեցիներուն ու պատմեցին անոնց Յիսուսի ըրածը:
