TOP STORIES
SAINT SARGIS THE WARRIOR AND HIS SON MARTIROS AND HIS FOURTEEN SOLDIERS

He became a figure of enduring spiritual stature in the Armenian Church. But he began his sojourn among our people as a stranger. This Saturday we will honor his memory once more-some 17 centuries after his death-during the Feast of St. Sarkis the Warrior.

Sarkis, or Sergius, was a 4th-century Roman soldier who became a Christian, and was persecuted for his faith. Fleeing Rome with his son Mardiros, Sarkis found refuge in Armenia, which at the time had been a Christian nation for two generations.

Father and son were eventually martyred in Persia. But years later, their relics were retrieved by St. Mesrob Mashdots, and brought back to Armenia-where Sarkis has remained a beloved saint, and an inspiring example of courage and conviction for our people.

It's noteworthy that St. Sarkis came to our homeland seeking refuge. What he found in Armenia was a welcoming home, a sanctuary of safety and acceptance, and a place where his memory would make a lasting, inspirational impression.

DIOCESAN AND OTHER NEWS
North America's Diocesan Primates Meet in California

The Primates of the Armenian Church's three diocesan jurisdictions in North America met on February 7 to discuss ways to collaboratively advance the church's mission among the people under their pastoral care.

At the Western Diocese's headquarters in Burbank, CA, Archbishop Hovnan Derderian hosted the Very Rev. Fr. Daniel Findikyan and Bishop Abgar Hovakimyan. The three are respectively the primates of the Western U.S., Eastern U.S., and Canadian dioceses.

Their meeting addressed topics such as youth outreach, lay ministry, Christian education, clergy preparation, and evangelism. There was a strong consensus among the three primates on the need to "focus more sharply on the authentic Christian mission of the church," said Eastern Diocesan Primate Fr. Daniel Findikyan.

A Legacy of Lions

The excellent sports website "The Athletic" departed from its usual coverage this week to address a story of history, sacrifice, and the unforgettable power of compassion.

The story, from the annals of the Armenian Genocide, concerned Stanley and Elsa Kerr-an American couple whose heroic efforts helped save thousands of Armenian orphans from death. Dr. Kerr eventually told his story in the classic Genocide-era account, The Lions of Marash.

Now a century after the Kerrs' outreach to Armenian refugees, their grandson, Steve Kerr, is the championship-winning coach of the Golden State Warriors NBA franchise. Coach Kerr was on hand when his family's legacy was celebrated by the San Francisco-area Armenian community. It turned out to be an emotional evening for everyone involved-including (to judge from the comments) readers of the online sports magazine.

"The Athletic" has unlocked its paywall to make the piece available to the general public, so click on the link to read the whole article.
#HyeManners: #HolyCommunion

HolyCommunion

Holy Communion is the climax of the Divine Liturgy: the very heart of the liturgy, instituted by Jesus himself. But as you approach the altar to receive the sacrament, what words or actions should you express?

Learn the answer in the latest offering from HyeManners, the Eastern Diocese's online series of instructional micro-videos. Click here to watch HolyCommunion.

Diocesan Parishes Lend Assistance to Wildfire Victims

The generosity of parishioners across the Eastern Diocese raised $10,000 to assist victims of last fall's destructive wildfires in California. In a message to the faithful last November, Diocesan Primate Fr. Daniel Findikyan urged parishes to take up collections for the cause.

The collected contributions were forwarded to the American Red Cross in Los Angeles on the recommendation of Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate of the Western Diocese. A message of appreciation from the Red Cross said the Diocese's charitable outreach will help bring food and shelter to families re-building in the wake of the disaster.
2019 Diocesan Assembly to Meet in Watertown, MA

The 117th Diocesan Assembly will convene May 2-4, 2019, at the Marriott Hotel in Burlington, MA. The St. James Church of Watertown, MA, will host the Diocesan Assembly, the concurrent Women's Guild Assembly, and the Clergy Conference (meeting April 29-May 1), bringing together hundreds of Armenian Church leaders from the Eastern Diocese. Diocesan Primate the Very Rev. Fr. Daniel Findikyan will preside.
Clergy, Diocesan delegates, and parish council chairs will soon receive notification (via mail and e-mail) regarding registration. Information on the 117th Diocesan Assembly-including online registration and room reservations-will be available on the St. James parish website in the coming weeks.

22 The next day the crowd that had stayed on the opposite shore of the lake realized that only one boat had been there, and that Jesus had not entered it with his disciples, but that they had gone away alone. 23 Then some boats from Tiberias landed near the place where the people had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks. 24 Once the crowd realized that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum in search of Jesus. 25 When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, "Rabbi, when did you get here?" 26 Jesus answered, "Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. 27 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval." 28 Then they asked him, "What must we do to do the works God requires?" 29 Jesus answered, "The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent." 30 So they asked him, "What sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you? What will you do? 31 Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written: 'He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'[a]" 32 Jesus said to them, "Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world." 34 "Sir," they said, "always give us this bread." 35 Then Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. 36 But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. 37 All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. 38 For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me.
John 6:22:38
