TravelWritersTravel Writers Coming to Southern Maryland 

Sixty or more travel writers will be coming to Southern Maryland as part of the 2011 Media Marketplace of the Mid Atlantic Tourism Public Relations Alliance (MATPRA) September 13-15. SMCT and county industry members are involved in conference planning. The conference will include tours of several St. Mary's County sites and attractions, a lunch at Sotterley Plantation and a reception and dinner at Historic St. Mary's City.

Plans and funding for construction of a new naval air museum are in place with construction scheduled to begin shortly. The new facility will be a boon for tourism, local hotels and Lexington Park revitalization. PRNAM's Museum Association will kick off fundraising for exhibits for the new facility with a dinner with former astronaut and US Senator John Glenn on Wednesday, April 13. The Association also has a new Web site:  For info on the museum and event contact

The Unified Committee for Afro-American Contributions (UCAC) under the leadership of Nathaniel Scroggins and past president Janice Walthour, will dedicate a monument to US Colored Troops as the nation begins its commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. The memorial monument will be installed at the John G. Lancaster Park and will honor USCT and Union soldiers while paying tribute to the two USCT Congressional Medal of Honor recipients from St. Mary's.  The monument will attract visitors interested in the Civil War and in African-American history.  For more information visit



SMCT developing electronic marketing program


SMCT has embarked on a major initiative to increase the county's competitive edge as a travel destination, and provide local partners with a great new marketing tool.  A technical advisory committee helped identify features to be incorporated into a new Web site design to include mapping and trip-planning functions, and functions that will allow partners to post packages, deals and events.  The initiative also includes development of a mobile app and enhanced social media features.

As the US Navy's premier aviation research, test and evaluation center, the Naval Air Station Patuxent River and St. Mary's County will participate in this nation-wide commemoration. Local events include a lecture series at Patuxent River Naval Air Museum and activities produced by the Lexington Park Business and Community Association. The Centennial celebration will hit its stride Labor Day Weekend (September 3 and 4) when the 2011 Air Expo features the Blue Angels and highlights the centennial.

St. Mary's, Calvert and Charles counties working under the leadership of the Calvert Marine Museum will produce a Southern Maryland War of 1812 map and guide.   Sotterley Plantation, the Patuxent River Naval Air Museum and the Historical Society are planning related exhibits and activities. A county War of 1812 steering committee under the leadership of county preservation planner Grace Mary Brady is working to ensure representation in state and national War of 1812 commemorative activities and programs.

Historic St. Mary's City will present its highest honor, the Cross Bottony, to docent and local historian and lecturer Peter Himmelheber at Maryland Day ceremonies on March 26. All in the historic preservation and museum community know and value Pete's research, articles and lectures, his outstanding abilities as a guide, and his dedication to furthering understanding and appreciation of Maryland's past.

A graphic logo and the tag line "a most convenient place" are now appearing in Leonardtown promotional materials. SMCT, the Leonardtown Business Association and Town of Leonardtown worked together to produce the items as part of a new marketing campaign. Contact for information.



LtownArtsCenterLeonardtown Arts Center to open this spring


Twelve studios and space for classes will open to the public in early spring in the Court Square building. The St. Mary's Arts Council will also relocate there. Building owner and Leonardtown Council member Dan Burris and Arts Council president Barbara L. St. Mary's second restaurant week will be held June 6-19.  The 2011 event planning team is headed by restaurateurs Rob Plant/Blue Wind Gourmet and Dana Spicuzza/ D.B. McMillan's Irish Pub and Grill.  Twenty-six restaurants participated in the 2010 promotion.  Restaurants who participated in a follow-up survey reported an 11 - 20% increase in customers during restaurant week. BeerfestBeerfest at Historic St. Mary's City


Historic St. Mary's City will host its first Beerfest on May 22 from noon to 6 p.m.  The event will feature mid-Atlantic micro breweries.  Food and drink-related events such as Restaurant Week, the Crab and Oyster Festivals, the Rockfish Festival and the Riverside Winefest are helping to position St. Mary's as a food destination. SMCT's Rebecca Deprey was joined by experienced ABA hand Shelley Peterson/Sleep Inn and Suites, and ABA newcomer Sue Wilkinson/Historic St. Mary's City at the 2011 marketplace, January 8-12 in Philadelphia.  Combined, they met with over 35 tour operators for sales appointments and networked with hundreds of motorcoach operators. Each tour bus that spends one overnight brings $11,000 on average to the local economy.

Maryland hotels, restaurants and attractions can send news about their specials or packages to the Maryland Office of Tourism for broadcast on Twitter. Messages must adhere to Twitter's standard for length: no more than 140 characters in total. A web address that offers more information should be a part of each message. Notice of "Tweetable" deals will go to the more than 2,000 followers of the tourism office's Twitter account, TravelMD. Send tweets for specials to Liz Fitzsimmons.
