Week 2, Here We Come!
August 22, 2016
Week One in Review
With parents and students lined up at the door, St. Mary's began its 161st year of educating the students of Fredericksburg and the surrounding area. Students, eager to rekindle friendships with classmates they hadn't seen since the conclusion of last school year, and teachers, eager to meet their new crop of SMS students, were excited to get this year started. We experienced great joy, beginning the year celebrating mass, as well as great sadness with the loss of our cafeteria manager, Ms. Terrie Nixon. The rain was welcome and somewhat symbolic as water represents new life, and that, like the rain, is something that has been absent over the summer months. We capped off the first week of school with a celebration of our first week back as well as the life of Ms. Nixon by our students enjoying each other's company in fellowship and recess. By the smiles present on the faces of all the Apache students, it's abundantly clear that this is going to be a fantastic school year.
School Supply Drive
In response to the recent events in Louisiana, St. Mary's will be doing what we can to help out and to send our Apache support to the area of Louisiana affected by recent flooding. We will be collecting school supplies Monday-Wednesday of this week that will be sent on Thursday to help our neighbors to the east get school started on the right foot. Please have your student(s) drop off school supplies with their homeroom teacher.
No School Friday
Friday is a Student/Staff holiday to celebrate the Gillespie County Fair. Our athletics program will be "floating" down Main Street to represent St. Mary's School. The parade starts around 10:00. Come out and support our community and our St. Mary's athletes.
St. Mary's will have Picture Day this Wednesday, August 24th. This is a free appropriate dress day. Flyers should have been brought home on Friday of last week.
Remind Messaging Service
Many of our teachers are adopting the use of a service/app called Remind (previously Remind 101). Please join the Remind service for our school from the following link:
. I will be sending reminders that will be received via the Remind app or via text messaging.
We want to know what ways you prefer to help in. We are asking all families to give of their time to help improve our school. Please fill out the form that was sent home Friday (or click on the link above) and return it to your child's homeroom teacher by tomorrow, Tuesday, August 23, 2016.
Spirit Shirts on Sale
Get your Apache Spirit Shirts! Orders are due by Wednesday, 8/31. Shirts are $8 each. We'll accept cash or checks made payable to SMS.
St. Mary's participates in Box Tops for Education to fund some of our classroom supply needs. We also collect: tabs for Ronald McDonald houses and used eyeglasses for the Lions Club "Lions Recycle for Sight" program. Any of these items can be given to your student's homeroom teacher. We will collect throughout the year.
What-a-Night at Whataburger!
We had a very successful evening at Whataburger. Thank you to all the family and friends who came to eat and supported the Apaches. We raised $750 for SMS in 3 hours. Whataburger commented that this was one of their most successful Whatanights. Way to show our Apache Spirit. Suzanna Sanchez won the raffle prize of Whataburger for a year and Anika Page won the coated insulated Apache cup for the best social media post for #apachewhatanight. The judges from the Fredericksburg Standard and parish office had a hard time deciding. We appreciate all of your photos.
Catholic Daughters Scholarship
Catholic Daughters are offering a $1000 Scholarship ($500 per semester) to any eligible St. Mary's School student whose family is registered as members of one of the Catholic Churches of Gillespie County. This scholarship is based on financial need as the primary consideration. Anyone who wishes to apply for this scholarship should pick up an application in the front office. The deadline for entry is September 15.
Athletic passes are available in the school office for $30. This will cover your admission to any Apache sporting events played at home. These are only available in the office; they are not available at the admission gate of the event.

Please pick up your children from extended day care in Room 8 of the elementary building. You can access the building from the stairs on the west side of the building. If you need to reach our extended day staff, please call 830-889-3914 between 4:00-5:45.
