Principal Notes                                               September 13, 2018

Dear Families,
We are just finishing our third week of school.  By now we have created a routine that is unlike the carefree days of summer, but yet it gives a rhythm to our lives in this busy world we live in.

Yesterday you received a letter and forms relating to an all school evacuation in case of a critical incident here at school.  Please turn in your permission slip and the Reunification Child Pick Up Authorization Form by tomorrow. You only need to turn in one Reunification Form per family.  The Reunification Information Form does not need to be turned it. It is for your information only. This is a copy of the form you will fill out if we have an evacuation. The form will be at the evacuation site.

Due to the lack of interest in the Before School Care for K4-8th grade, the program will be discontinued.

Please join us this Sunday for our annual Parish Picnic from 12-2pm.  This year the food will be provided by Bunzel's. This is our way of saying thanks to the parish for all that they do to support  the school. We look forward to seeing you there. Special thanks to Darby Koehne, Didi Lemberger and Belinda Russell and the 6th grade parents for organizing this event.

When you stop in the office, please take notice of the new artwork in the office.  During the in-service week for the teachers, Ms. Marina Lee, our Artist in Residence came in to do a team building activity with the teachers. The art we created is beautiful! We are so proud of it.

On Thursday, next week, Ms. Marina Lee, will be working with our students in honor of Peace Day.  They will be making a large intricate art piece on the playground with colored chalk. Be sure to stop and take a look.

Please mark your calendar for next Friday, September 21 st at 1:30pm.  Join us as we come together with the School Sisters of Notre Dame for their annual Peace Prayer.  We will be meeting at the Peace Pole on the grounds of the convent across the street.  This is for grades 3rd-8th.

Students in grade K5-8 have been working on MAP testing (Measures of Academic Progress).  This electronic test is given 3 times a year. Watch for scores to come out next week. You will receive them electronically.

If you have any questions or concerns, please give me a call.  I am happy to help.

Have a wonderful week.

Mrs. Mary Tretow

Home & School Volunteers
Thank you to all of you that have already signed up to help with our events this year. We have a really fun slate of events on the calendar and we want to continue to support the needs of the school and our students. Please take a look at our Sign-Up Genius for opportunities, but please especially consider the following. If you have any questions or just want to discuss your schedule and possible volunteer options, please give me a call or send me a message.

Many thanks,
Rebecca Mindy

Publicity: H&S needs someone to promote events in a coordinated way. This is a Board position designed to work with event chairs to get the word out on upcoming events. H&S meets 1  Monday  per month.

Holiday Treasures: Holiday Treasures is a fun event that takes place during the school day on  December 18 & 19. The students get into the spirit of giving by shopping for Christmas gifts for friends a family. Set-up can occur anytime on  December 17th (day or evening) and almost all volunteer slots have been filled. Please consider being Santa's helper at SMV. This is a great option for someone looking to get involved.

Junior High Forensics: Forensics is a wonderful opportunity for our students to practice public speaking, develop critical thinking skills, and gain confidence. We are looking for a parent, grandparent, alumni or parish volunteer (or team) to coach our Junior High students, handle the administration and scheduling for meets, and coordinate volunteers for judging and supervision at meets. Practices have typically occurred after school and meets occur at various public and private schools in the area  on Friday afternoon/evenings and Saturdays in January and February.

Mother Son Event (Tentative): New, low-key event, possibly late Fall. An idea has already been discussed, but we need someone to take the lead on setting up the event. This is a great option for someone looking to get involved.

Think of all the hours you've spent helping the kids sell magazines, picking up gift wrap and cookie dough orders and delivering orders!  How much easier is a Dance-A-Thon? Can I get a Wahooo!!!

But the event does need a bit of support. Please check out the volunteer spots needed on  Friday, September 28.  Classroom helpers, dinner set up, security and clean up ... where can you lend a hand?

If you are a family of young children and you haven't attended an SMV Playgroup, you need to mark your calendars for  October 14th when the next playgroup will be hosted!

The SMV Playgroup is an casual and fun gathering of school and parish families that occurs during the school year, once per month after  9am mass.  This past  Sunday, a huge group of families gathered on the St. Mary's playground for fellowship.  It is wonderful to see so many school families connect with each other and with other families in the parish- some of whom will be school families in the near future.  You will also find many junior high SMV students that volunteer their time to make sure the youngest of our community have tremendous fun.  Lastly, you will find two dedicated moms, Katie Carnell and Monica Schmidt, who continue to organize this event for everyone!  There are so many aspects of this event that definitely make it a Positively SMV experience!

We hope to see you in October- please watch virtual backpack and the parish bulletin for details and mark your calendars now!
And with that you will find a few things that are Positively SMV!
