Principal Notes                                                    February 20, 2020

Dear SMV Families,

Next week is Ash Wednesday and it begins the forty days of Lent that leads to Easter. On Ash Wednesday, we come together to remind ourselves that we don't always follow God's ways and need to ask God for His mercy and forgiveness. Like God's people in the time of the prophets, we wear ashes to show that we want to turn away from whatever keeps us from God, and to have a change of heart, so that we can live in right relationship with God and each other.

For Catholics, Ash Wednesday is also a day of fasting and abstaining from meat. Fasting reminds us that food alone cannot make us happy. We must also be fed with prayer, with God's Word and by meeting Jesus in the Sacraments, especially Reconciliation and Eucharist. The small sacrifices we make during Lent make room in our hearts to welcome the risen Jesus at Easter. Please take some time to talk with your children about the meaning of Lent and discuss together what could be a meaningful sacrifice for this time. Join us for Mass at 8:00 on Wednesday morning to begin our Lenten journey.

Just a reminder, there is no mass on Tuesday.

Our Lenten theme is," Do Justice, Love Kindness, Walk Humbly," Micah 6:8.  Click here for the electronic copy of our Lenten Overview. On Friday your student will be bringing home a hard copy of our Lenten overview.

We will be participating in Catholic Relief Services Operation Rice Bowl. Your donations of loose change will help the needs of our global community.  Bowls will be going home tomorrow.

Also, we are asking you to help the clients of Milwaukee's House of Peace by filling a special brown bag with personal hygiene products for them. Clients of this agency are the homeless, unemployed and underemployed of the inner city of Milwaukee. Through this collection, we join in solidarity with them so as to be one in Christ with "the least of these." Bags will be going home tomorrow.

Congratulations to the 8th grade girls along with our 8th grade boys who will be playing in the Padre Serra Tournament at Marquette High School. We will let you know the date and time when it is available.
We are working on the school calendar for 2020-2021. Click here for a preliminary schedule.

* Lent is a fitting time for self-denial: we would do well to ask ourselves what we can give up in order to help and enrich others by our own poverty. Pope Francis

Faithfully Yours,
Mrs. Mary Tretow

Six Flags Read to Succeed
In past years, some of your children in K5-grade 6 may have participated in Six Flags Read to Succeed. This program requires students to keep a log of their minutes read at home, excluding school work. When six hours (360 minutes) of reading is reached, they receive a ticket to Six Flags theme park. The program is now changed. It is no longer administered through school. If you are interested in having your children participate, go to

Use the school code AGXXE for all grades (K5-grade 6) and register your children. You will enter their reading minutes online and submit on or before April 17. You will then receive the Six Flag ticket by e-mail.
Questions? Please contact Miss Benson in the library.

The Makerspace is looking for empty Kleenex boxes and tape.  Please send them to the school office.

Elementary Forensics
We hope you have received the email containing the google doc to register for Elementary Forensics.   Remember, you need to fill out one for EACH of your children participating!   Registration should be done by Tuesday, February 25th!  We really want as many 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders to participate as possible.  Friday, March 20th will be our in-house Forensics Fest starting at 9:00am.  Coaching sessions will be offered after school on these Mondays: February 28, Mar. 6, and Mar. 13.  All coaching sessions will be held in the library from 2:45-3:30pm.  We will be looking for parent volunteers to help out on these Mondays in a future email.  Any questions, email Ann Scott  or Julie Perez

The Auction for Education Games Committee really needs your help with our Wine Pull and our Gift Card Wall.  Please consider donating a bottle of wine or a gift card (any denomination of gift card, but ideally $25 value or more)  These gift cards can be from places you frequent: gas stations, coffee shops, Target/Wal-Mart, restaurants, grocery stores, the mall, etc.  Purchase the gift card from SCRIP and you will earn money toward your tuition for next school year!  Did you receive some gift cards at Christmas that you will not use?  Please consider donating them to our auction's gift card wall. Please drop off these gift cards and/or bottles of wine in the school office.  We appreciate your help and generosity.

Positively SMV

Please join me in welcoming one of SMV's newer members, Mrs. Maria Schloemer.  You will find Mrs. Schloemer in Mrs. Smrz's classroom where she serves as the k4 aide.  Mrs. Schloemer feels blessed to live and work in such a faith filled community.  She also has a rich and deep history at our neighboring parish and school, St. John Vianney.  Her parents where charter members of both the SJV parish and school, all three of her sons currently attend school there, and she serves as their chair of the Pro Life Committee.  In their free time, the family likes to spend time on Post Lake in Elcho, WI, boating, swimming, fishing and enjoying the peace of the outdoors.  Mrs. Schloemer is also busy finishing her last semester of the Saturday Institute for Lay Ministry.  With so many things to keep her busy, Mrs. Schloemer says she still takes time everyday to thank God for "this opportunity to share my life and faith with St. Mary's and to receive back even more love from all of you"!  Thank YOU Mrs. Schloemer for sharing your time and faith with our school and most especially some of our youngest students!
