Principal Notes                                               October 11, 2018

Dear Families,

There are only nine days left until the Souls for Education Walk at Mount Mary University.  It is not too late, you can still register. We will be serving coffee and donuts starting at 8:45. We have arranged for a bus to come to school and to take the first 60 people that would like to ride it. The bus will leave at 9:15. It will leave Mount Mary at 12:00 to take you back to school.  When you arrive at Mount Mary that day look for the signs that say Deanery 4. I will be there with a large SMV flag. Please pray for good weather for the day!

Thank you to Jen Zils and her Dance-a thon team comprised of Annie Bolger, Michelle Akel, Lissette Fuller and Erin Lampe for all their work on our first dance-a-thon.  Thank you to the parents who contributed your time and talent and treasure. Also, thank you for reaching out to your companies for all the matching gifts that came in. A final number will be coming soon.

Congratulations to our 8th grade boys volleyball team!  They have been invited to the Seton Volleyball Tournament. We will share information about when and where it is available.

Just a reminder that Monday, October 15, is the last day to wear shorts.

If you have any questions or concerns, please give me a call.  I am happy to help.

Have a wonderful week.

SMV Christmas Concert Information
For this year's Christmas concert, students in 4K through 5th grade will perform the mini-musical Carol and the Belles . 4th and 5th graders will have the opportunity to audition for main character roles during music classes this week and next week. Our musical is set in 1954, so all students in 4K-1st and 3rd-5th grades should start planning a 1950's outfit for the Christmas concert. This "costume" can be very simple - such as jeans and a white t-shirt for boys and jeans with a sweater and scarf for girls. Please click here if you need some more inspiration! Mrs. Kesler will speak with students in main character roles about costumes. Students in 2nd grade should plan to wear their living nativity costumes for the birth of Jesus scene in our musical. Mrs. Kesler and Ms. Koepke will talk more about this with 2nd grade soon!

Calling all parent artists! We are looking for parent volunteers to help paint our set for the Christmas show. If you are interested and could be available on a weekday between 12:00 pm and 3:30 pm, please email Mrs. Kesler at Thank you!

Home & School Volunteers
Thank you to Jen Zils and the many volunteers and donors who made the Dance A Thon a huge success! Home & School appreciates the vision, hard work and generosity that made this a successful, new event for SMV!

Spooks & Spoofs: We need your help to make this SMV tradition a success! Spooks & Spoofs is our annual Halloween party, complete with a costume contest, haunted house, dancing, games, a bouncy house and more. We have volunteer opportunities on the night of the event and both during the day and evening before the event. Please check out the Sign Up Genius to find time that fits into your schedule. We hope to see you there!!!
Holiday Treasures: We are looking for a co-chair to run Holiday Treasures. Erin Lampe has agreed to take the lead, but she could use someone to help her out. This is a fun event that takes place during the school day on December 18 & 19. The students get into the spirit of giving by shopping for Christmas gifts for friends a family. Set-up can occur anytime on December 17th (day or evening) and almost all volunteer slots have been filled. Please consider being Santa's helper at SMV. This is a great option for someone looking to get involved.
Junior High Forensics: We are looking for 2 more people to join Brigid Harmeyer on a team of 3 to lead our Forensics program and coach our students. We hope to be able to continue this program at SMV, but we'll need your support. Forensics is a wonderful opportunity for our students to practice public speaking, develop critical thinking skills, and gain confidence. Practices have typically occurred after school and meets occur at various public and private schools in the area on Friday afternoon/evenings and Saturdays in January and February. Please contact Rebecca Mindy or Brigid Harmeyer if you may be interested or have questions as you consider this opportunity.

In Appreciation Fund
For the VERY organized parents in this group, we wanted to give you a heads up that the IN APPRECIATION FUND will be back again this year!!!!
This is a VERY easy way to give a holiday gift to the SMV faculty and staff.
We will be collecting funds in November and early December and they will be distributed between ALL SMV staff members!!
Any amount is appreciated!
Your family's last name will be included in the cards we give to each recipient!!
There will be more information coming in the virtual backpack in the next month!
The good news is.... you have one less person to buy a Christmas present for!
If you have any questions please ask either Rebecca Mindy or Amy Van Ells.

As so many of you know, our wonderful school is supported in many, many ways by our parish community.  As such, opportunities that allow for our school families to give back to the parish with time and talent are so important.
Starting this month, SMV families will have the opportunity to be Ministers of Hospitality at 9am masses.  Below you will find the link to sign up.  Helping families would distribute Orders of Worship at the start of mass and also help with the presentation of the Offertory Gifts. Thank you for your help in sharing the SMV spirit with our parish community!

And with that you will find a few things that are Positively SMV!
Athletic News

SMV's 6th grade girls placed 2nd in the St John Vianney's Volleyball Tournament in September.  Not only did they play well, but they received a very nice compliment from the tournament referee for being one of her favorite group of girls. They truly represented the school in a positive manner.
