Principal Notes                                               September 20, 2018

Dear Families,

Summer is official over this week. We are now in the routine of school and all that goes with that. The first day of autumn is Saturday. We look forward to cooler days and nights, fall leaves and all things pumpkin.
Due to the rain this week we have had to reschedule a few things.  Our evacuation drill has now been moved to next Tuesday.

Also, our peace prayer art project has been moved to next Thursday.

Thank you to Carlos and Meghan Jimenez  and Michelle Denis who coordinated the New Parent Social.  We could not provide all the wonderful extra things for you and your children without the help of our parents that volunteer their time.  It was wonderful to see new families mingling with our ambassador families.

I hope you are all planning to come to our 1st Annual Dance-a-Thon on Friday, September 28th.  All the money raised stays here at St. Mary's. It will be a wonderful evening.

Come one and all to the Annual Pet Blessing on Thursday, October 4 at 6:30 in the gardens in front of the church atrium. Make sure that all animals are on leashes or in proper cages or containers to insure a safe pet blessing.

The Soles for Catholic Education Walk is a month away.  If you haven't registered, please think about joining us.

Saturday, October 13th is our Annual Trivia Night. There is still time to put a group together for this fun night.  New families, we would love to see you there.  Once again, our own Mr. Falk, 6 th -8 th grade math teacher (and who appeared on Jeopardy nine times) will be hosting.

Just a reminder as you look at your calendar for October.  School is closed on October 4th and 5th.   These days are calendared as professional development time for the teachers.  On October 5th we will be going downtown and joining all of the teachers in the Milwaukee Archdiocese for our convention.

If you have any questions or concerns, please give me a call.  I am happy to help.

Have a wonderful week.

Faithfully,
Mrs. Mary Tretow
Principal

Catholic Schools Walk for Education
Saturday, October 20th, is the Catholic Schools Walk for Education at Mount Mary University. If you haven't signed up yet, you need to register by Tuesday, September 25th, to receive your free t-shirt.  Remember that 100% of the pledge money you raise stays as St. Mary's. Go to  www.catholicschoolswalk.org to register under the St.Mary's Visitation Team. Whether you donate or not, we would love for you to walk with us!

Spirit Wear Days
Spirit Wear Days are usually the second Wednesday of the month. On these spirit wear days we will be asking for a food donation for the Congregation of the Great Spirit.
We have a second spirit wear day which is usually the fourth Wednesday of the month. This month's second spirit wear day will be on the same day as the Dance-a-thon, September 28.
The school has 5:11 assemblies once a month.  Each grade has a month in which they will share with the school one of the seven Catholic Social Justice Teachings. There will be a month where we ask for a $1 which will go towards a charity that the students help.
Please check the school google calendar for the spirit wear days.

Playground/Lunchroom Duties
Parents MUST sign in for their duties when they enter the school office.  Once you have completed all six duties a $200 credit/check will be given back to you.  If you don't sign in we can not issue you the $200.  If you need help signing in please see someone in the school office for help.

Home & School Volunteers
Thank you to all of you that have already signed up to help with our events this year. We have a really fun slate of events on the calendar and we want to continue to support the needs of the school and our students. Please take a look at our Sign-Up Genius for opportunities, but please especially consider the following. If you have any questions or just want to discuss your schedule and possible volunteer options, please give me a call or send me a message.

Many thanks,
Rebecca Mindy

Publicity: H&S needs someone to promote events in a coordinated way. This is a Board position designed to work with event chairs to get the word out on upcoming events. H&S meets 1  Monday  per month.

Junior High Forensics: Forensics is a wonderful opportunity for our students to practice public speaking, develop critical thinking skills, and gain confidence. We are looking for a parent, grandparent, alumni or parish volunteer (or team) to coach our Junior High students, handle the administration and scheduling for meets, and coordinate volunteers for judging and supervision at meets. Practices have typically occurred after school and meets occur at various public and private schools in the area  on Friday afternoon/evenings and Saturdays in January and February.

Mother Son Event (Tentative): New, low-key event, possibly late Fall. An idea has already been discussed, but we need someone to take the lead on setting up the event. This is a great option for someone looking to get involved.

Dance-a-Thon
Thank you, to all the parents who have signed up to be class helpers during the Dance-A-Thon.
We are still in need of volunteers.  This is a one-day event.  Think of all the time you'll save not having to deliver cookie dough! You signing up to help for an hour or two will go a long way for this event. Thanks in advance.

Hey moms, dance a bit more because you don't have to make dinner on  September 28 !!  (Maybe that frees up some time for you to volunteer, hint, hint )
Subway dinner will be available for purchase on the evening of the  Dance-A-Thon,  September 28.
Dinner will be 5:30-6:15 pm in the school cafeteria.  Family dance to follow in the gym till 8 pm.
Please RSVP for dinner with the number of adults and children (3 & over) who will be attending.
The cost of the dinner is $6/per person or $25 for a family.
Pay the night of the event, exact change or check to SMV H&S preferred.
Dinner will include: Subs, chips, cookie, and water
Finally, a BIG Thanks to all of the teachers who created class incentives for the Dance-A-Thon.
All teachers who turned in their class incentive by Friday, 9/14 were entered into a drawing to win a $25 gift card.
The winner is  Mrs. Sinense
Be sure to ask your kiddos if they know their class incentive.
Don't forget, there is a suggestion box in the school office.  Be sure to submit your ideas for  a H&S  gift to the school if we hit our MEGA goal!!

Positively
 SMV

Everyone who visits school has surely enjoyed the absolutely lovely gardens in our front courtyard!  There are two very dedicated moms, Patty Steigerwald and Annette Walters, who work tirelessly to keep everything so beautiful.  Miss Patty and Mrs. Walters give their time, even throughout the summer months, making sure the weeds are gone, the seeds are planted and the colors are stunning for all that enter SMV.  Thank you Miss Patty and Mrs. Walters, your dedication to our school is Positively SMV!

And with that you will find a few things that are Positively SMV!
