Principal Notes                                               January 10, 2019

Dear Families,

Catholic Schools Week is not far away. It is scheduled for the last week in January. This year's theme is "Catholic Schools: Learn, Serve, Lead, Succeed." We have many things planned - watch for more details coming home soon.   We will begin with our annual Chili Chomp and Book Fair on Friday night, January 25th.  Our Open House will be on Sunday, January 27th from 8:00-12:30 pm. Please plan on stopping by to visit your child's classroom,  our Jr. High Science Fair. The Boy Scouts will be serving a pancake breakfast in the cafeteria from 8:00-11:00. Come join us! We will be giving tours to prospective families.  Please encourage any family who is interested in coming to St. Mary's to attend.  You are our best marketing tool, help us spread the word.  More information will be coming soon.

Grades K5-8th grade will start MAP's testing Friday.   Results will be emailed shortly after that.

This school year seems to be flying by.  It's hard to believe, but Thursday, January 17th marks the end of the 2nd quarter.  We are already halfway through the school year. Conferences are Thursday, February 14th. This conference is not mandatory.  A request can be made by you, the parent or the teacher.  Dismissal is at 11:00 that day. Conferences are 2:00-6:00. Signup Genius will be coming soon.

It is the time of year when people start looking at their taxes. You might want to check with your tax professional to see if your family qualifies for tax credits and /or deductions associated with child care and private school tuition payments.

Over the past year, a small group of volunteers has been working to establish an Athletics Board to support our Athletics programs at SMV. Thanks to the following people who where instrumental in establishing our Board and will continue to serve during the 2019-2020 school year: Kevin Carnell, Katy Cornell, Kevin Ellis, Bill Martin, Tom Mindy, Nick Puetzer, Jeff Russell, Marissa Selthafner, and myself. Special thanks to Tom Mindy who will be serving as Athletic Director for the 2019-2020 school year! I personally want to thank Jeff Russell for his leadership this past year as our Athletic Director.

Office Notes

Labeling Items
Please make sure that you label your child's clothing items.  It is that time of the year when we have lost snow pants, hats, mittens, boots, coats, sweaters, water bottles piling up in our lost and found.  It helps us to return the items if your name is on the items.

Remembering your duty
Parents if you are unable to do your playground or lunchroom duty that you signed up for in the beginning of the school year please let the office know so that we can find a sub for you.  It is really hard for one person to do lunchroom duty by themselves and it is not safe to have only one person for playground duty.

New Phone Number/Address
If you got a new cell phone and number over the holidays please let the school office know so that we can update our information.

Six Flags
Six Flags Read to Succeed is a reading program that allows students to earn a free ticket to Six Flags theme park. Students in K5 through grade six may participate. Students need to log their independent reading to reach 600 minutes before the end of February. See the Parent Letter in this Virtual Backpack for more information, or contact Miss Benson in the library.
Open House
Please consider helping at our upcoming SMV Open House on Sunday, January 27th.  We are in need of hospitality help and tour guides.  It is a very enjoyable morning as you are able to socialize with existing families, meet new families, and share your SMV spirit!  Thank you in advance!

" My children were more than adequately prepared by SMV for the rigors of high school. They are among the few who know how to write a lab report, they are familiar with annotating novels, they are very well versed in math and geography as compared to their peers and they say Theology is a breeze because it's a review of everything they learned at SMV.   Across the board SMV graduates excel in high school, particularly as compared to their peers.
Two years ago Mr. Monday, principal of Marquette High, was asked at a Freshmen parent meeting if the Catholic grade schools are doing a good job preparing students for the academic rigor at Marquette High. His response was that only a handful are, and one of them is SMV."  -Beth Parey
And with that you will find a few things that are Positively SMV!
