The 6th grade students, who are studying biodiversity and the effect of the loss of honeybees, had an opportunity to get up close and personal  with the bees. Using microscopes attached to their Chromebooks, the students could examine the bee's anatomy and how the individual parts aid in pollination. The microscopes allow the students to magnify the bees up to 1000x and take photographs.

Principal Notes                                               December 6, 2018

Dear Families,

This Sunday is Advent's midpoint.  Programs, concerts, gift exchanges, final exams and celebrations of many kinds are pushing to take center stage in our lives. Details are straining for attention against the big picture, the long view, the reason for this holy time.  In precious silence, longing for refreshment and for rest, we remember the One whose work it is we're doing, whose yoke we bear. Come Lord Jesus.

Yesterday, Fr. Peter, Fr. Gibson and 6 priests from our neighboring parishes offered the Sacrament of Reconciliation to our 3rd -8th graders as part of our student's faith journey this Advent season.

Please join us for our Christmas Concert, Carol and the Belles,  next Thursday, December 11 th at  1:30 and 6:30 in the gym. Students in K4- 5 th and the band students will be performing.

We are pleased to announce that after reviewing hundreds of applications, Mrs. Biernat and St. Mary's has been chosen to be an AstroSchool. AstroSchool participants will be exposed to  numerous topics that will directly improve our STEM teaching through Introduction to Coding and Arduino.

We are thrilled to announce that we will be offering all day K3 for the 2019-2020 school year. The time will be 7:45-2:30 with an option to leave at 11:30. Join us for two, three, four or five days. Price per day for the year will be $1150. Click here for the registration form.  Please call the school office with any questions.

Thank you to those who returned your registration and fee for next year. If you have not done this, please do so by Friday, December 14. There is a $25.00 late fee after that date.  If for some reason you are unable to pay your registration fee, please call me to make arrangements. We would still like you to register. Planning for the 2019-2020 school year has started.  We are already getting calls about open spots for next year. Sunday, January 27th is the beginning of Catholic Schools Week and our Open House. More information will be coming in January.

Winter has arrived.  Don't forget boots, snow pants, hats and gloves.  We do go outside for recess every day. It is not too early to talk about school closings . We never know what the Wisconsin winter will bring.  Last year we did have a day off due to snow. If the Elmbrook School District is in session we always follow their school closings about weather.  If they are closed, so are we. If they are off then Fr. Peter and I will make the decision to close or not. Safety is always our first concern. People often joke about wanting the "magic code" to call into the radio/tv stations to close the school.  It truly is a difficult decision that affects all our families. The decision is never made lightly. Please check WTMJ, WISN and FOX 6. We will also send a message call, text or email through ONE CALL NOW, our emergency response system. If there is no school, all afterschool and night activities are canceled. That includes athletics.  There will be no practice.

Just a reminder for those students that have basketball practice starting at 4:00, students may not be unattended from the time school lets out until practice. Players may arrive 15 minutes early for practice.

The last day of school before Christmas vacation is Friday, December 21 st . We have 8:00 mass and directly after our 2nd graders will perform the Living Nativity.  Please join us. We have dismissal that day at 11:00.  We will return on Wednesday, January 2nd.

If you have any questions or concerns, please give me a call.  I am happy to help.

Have a blessed Advent!

Lost and Found
Parents please make sure to check out the Lost and Found table in the school atrium.  Anything left after December 21 will be donated to the SMV Thrift shop.
The Hour of Code - Computer Science Education Week
The Hour of Code started as a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify CODE, to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. The Hour of Code takes place each year during Computer Science Education Week (December 3-9). All SMV students will be participating in CODE activities during this week. This is also a "kick-off" to expanded and continued CODE activities throughout the school year. Go to to experience some fun CODE activities as a family.

Feast Day of Our Lady of Guadeloupe
Next Wednesday, December 12th, is the Feast Day of Our Lady of Guadeloupe, Patroness of the Americas. As is the SMV tradition, we will have a all school gathering to celebrate this wonderful feast day on that day at 2pm in the gym. Grade 6 will lead us  with a play, prayer, song, and procession to honor Our Lady. We hope you can join us. A more detailed flier is attached.

SMV Talent Show
This year's talent show will take place during Catholic Schools Week on Tuesday, January 29th in the afternoon. Start preparing and practicing your performances now - you may sing, dance, play an instrument, or perform any other act! Students in 1st-8th grade may participate, and acts should be no longer than two minutes each. Our talent show team will be screening all student entries during the week of December 17th during recess and music class time. Please click here to sign up for the talent show by Friday, Dec. 14th and Mrs. Kesler will arrange a time to meet with you. Please email with any questions. Thank you!

After School Care Coordinator Needed
St. Mary's Visitation Parish School is looking for a friendly, energetic person to work as our After School Care Coordinator. Resposibilities include supervising a support staff member, recording and maintaining usage records, monitoring students arrival and sign out, assisting with snack time and clean up, providing students with play materials, help with homework, and above all, making After School Care a fun place to be at the end of the school day.
The hours are 2:30-6:00 p.m. or until the last child leaves.  We are open every day we have school.

SMV's Office Christmas Tree
Every year we ask SMV families if they would like to donate a Christmas ornament for our tree.  All we ask is that you put your family name and the year on the ornament.  Please drop it off in the school office.

4th Grade Reflections

SMV 4th graders reflect each week on Father Peter's homily message.  Here is what 2 4th graders wrote about this week's Faith message; "Advent is the time to make things right."
Father Peter's message means to me, that Advent is a time to fix your soul.  Like going to confession and to work harder on not making so many mistakes.  Rose
Making things right means to me is to try your hardest to be like Jesus. And to treat others how you want to be treated. Lastly try your best to try not to sin.  And that is what making things right means to me.--Grace

There are two little elves at St. Mary's these days.  Mrs. Rebecca Mindy and Mrs. Amy Van Ells are dedicating a lot of their time to the SMV In Appreciation Fund.  The In Appreciation Fund is a great way to show your support during the Christmas season for the entire school staff.  Mrs. Mindy and Mrs. Van Ells are in charge of collecting the money donated by families and then allocating it among the staff.  Thank you Mrs. Mindy and Mrs. Van Ells for being Santa's little helpers once again this year!

Recently, quite a crew of SMV students participated in the Lion King Jr. at the Sunset Theater in Elm Grove.  The show was amazing!  But even more amazing was the support the 5th graders received from their teacher Mrs. Scherr.  Mrs. Scherr attended one of the performances to show her support.  It is true, the teachers at SMV are wonderful.  Thank you Mrs. Scherr for showing your class what it means to be Positvely SMV!

And with that you will find a few things that are Positively SMV!
