Principal Notes                                                    December 5, 2019

Dear SMV Families,

This Sunday is the second Sunday in Advent.  Programs, concerts, gift exchanges, tests, and celebrations of many kinds are pushing to take center stage in our lives. Details are straining for attention against the big picture, the long view, the reason for this holy time.  In precious silence, longing for refreshment and for rest, we remember the One whose work it is we're doing, whose yoke we bear. Come Lord Jesus.

On November 24th the Archbishop led the closing Mass for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee's year-long 175th anniversary celebration at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. During this special celebration the Archbishop also inducted thirty-two members to establish the first Order of the Catechists. I was part of this special group. Individuals were selected with a special task in mind, to use the teachings of the Catholic Church and integrate them into the ministry of the Church in which they are engaged. These ministries ranged from teaching, parish business management and RCIA, to school administration and motherhood. We were charged with praying daily for those engaged in their ministries, as well as with meeting three times a year as an Order to receive formation from the archbishop, the auxiliary bishops or a pastoral expert. We also pledged to intentionally incorporate the teachings of the Catholic Church into our area of ministry. I am truly humbled to be part of this.  Please click here to read the article in the Catholic Herald.

Please join us for our Christmas Concert  next Tuesday, December 10 th at  1:00 and 6:30 in the gym. Students in K3- 5 th and the band students will be performing.

Thank you to those who returned your registration and fee for next year.  If you have not done this, please do so by Friday, December 13. There is a $25.00 late fee after that date.  If for some reason you are unable to pay your registration fee, please email/call me to make arrangements. We would still like you to register. To guarantee your spot we need your registration. Planning for the 2020-2021 school year has started.  We are already getting calls about open spots for next year. Registration for parish members starts on December 16. Non-parish members registration is on Sunday, January 26th , the beginning of Catholic Schools Week and our Open House. More information on Open House  will be coming in January.

Winter has arrived.  Don't forget boots, snow pants, hats and gloves.  We do go outside for recess every day. It is not too early to talk about school closings . We never know what the Wisconsin winter will bring. In regard to school closings,  if the Elmbrook School District is in session we always follow their school closings about weather.  If they are closed, so are we. If they are off, then Fr. Peter and I will make the decision to close or not. Safety is always our first concern. People often joke about wanting the "magic code" to call into the radio/tv stations to close the school.  It truly is a difficult decision that affects all our families. The decision is never made lightly. Please check WTMJ, WISN and FOX 6. We will also send a message by phone, text or email through ONE CALL NOW, our emergency response system. If there is no school, all after school and night activities are canceled. That includes athletics.  There will be no practice.
The last day of school before Christmas vacation is Friday, December 20th. We have 8:00 mass and directly after our 2nd graders will perform the Living Nativity.  Please join us. We have dismissal that day at 11:00. We will return on Wednesday, January 2nd.

*The true spirit of Christmas is Kindness.

Faithfully Yours,
Mrs. Mary Tretow

Positively SMV

Mrs. Nicole Klein is a SMV name you most likely have heard.  Mrs. Klein is currently the student service coordinator and extension teacher at SMV.  In her 18 years at school she has also taught computers, first grade and math.  Mrs. Klein has three children, Tyler, Mitchell and Josi and lives in Hartford.  The family stays very busy attending wrestling tournaments, baseball games and ballet recitals.  They also love camping, boating and spending time outdoors together.  Mrs. Klein is passionate about her job at SMV because of "the support and family atmosphere"- she loves continuing to learn about educational strategies and how to help students improve.  Thank you Mrs. Klein for sharing your talents with our students  and helping to make SMV such a wonderful learning environment!

Parents, Another season of Catholic Youth Ministry (CYM) basketball is upon us!  SMV is in need of a CYM Basketball Coordinator.  CYM basketball offers boys the opportunity to continue to represent their Parish as they attend high school.  The CYM Coordinator would be responsible for coordinating gym times with the school, distributing uniforms, organizing coaches, and other duties such as managing the relationship with the league.  Practice begins in November and the season runs through the beginning of March.  After setup is complete, duties are relatively minor.  The CYM Coordinator sits on the SMV Athletic Board and would be asked to attend 3-4 board meetings per year.  This is great way for you to stay connected with SMV sports.  If you are interested or have questions, please reach out to Tom Mindy, SMV AD,, 414 467 6864.
