Principal Notes                                               November 15, 2018

Dear Families,

Thanksgiving is right around the corner. As we reflect on the many things for which we are thankful, I want to share a few of mine with you.   I am thankful for our students who come to school every day ready to learn. They give us a daily reminder of what is important and why we are here.  I am thankful for the support of the parents in creating a wonderful partnership with us. I am thankful for Fr. Peter and St. Mary's parishioners, the teachers, our school secretary, the classroom aides, the parish staff, the lunchroom staff, the bus drivers, and the after school staff.  I am also thankful for our volunteers who enthusiastically contribute so much to our school. There are so many people that work behind the scenes on a daily basis to make this a wonderful place. Not a day goes by that I am not amazed how God is working through all of us so his voice can be heard.  I witness random acts of kindness all day. Not just from our students and staff, but from all that enter our building. I am thankful to be here at St. Mary's and be a part of this loving community. My life is better because of all of you.

Thank you to everyone that contributed to the Thanksgiving Drive.  We were able to make 16 baskets that will be delivered today to those in need.

On November 28, at 10:00 all parishes, schools and Catholic faithful within the Archdiocese of Milwaukee are encouraged to ring in the 175th Anniversary of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, the day the archdiocese was founded back in 1843. Our school will be participating in the one minute of bell ringing. We have purchased a small bell for each child to participate and a small chocolate candy bell to celebrate.  Feel free to send a bell on that day if you wish.

Winter has arrived. Please make sure your child is dressing for the weather. That includes a coat, leg covering, hats, gloves and snowpants if necessary.  We do go outside for recess every day.

We still have tags on the Angel Tree in the school atrium.  Stop by and take one. You will make someone's Christmas brighter. Angel Tree items are due Monday, November 26 th .

Did you know that you can buy gift cards through our Scrip Program?  What a great way to buy Christmas gifts and help pay your tuition. You can get 80% of the profit toward next year's tuition. Wouldn't you like to start earning money for your 2019-2020 tuition? Click on the Scrip links on the left under Home and School. We also have gift cards in the office for purchase right away. If you haven't signed up, do so today!

Just a reminder, the students only have school on Monday, November 20th. See you at conferences.
Happy Thanksgiving!

If you have any questions or concerns, please give me a call.  I am happy to help.

Office Notes
Picture Re-take Day
Picture re-take day has been scheduled for November 27.  If you choose to have your child's picture re-taken all you need to do is bring back the photos on the 27th.  If this is the first time your child will be having their photo taken they must bring in the envelop with payment.  If you need an envelope please see Mrs. Dries in the office. Students who are having re-takes or need to have them taken a first time may dress up for the day.

Hot Lunch Menu Change
On Monday, November 26, the hot lunch choices will be chicken tenders or mini corn dogs.

Geo Bee
SMV held its 2018-2019 National Geographic Bee on Wednesday.  Competing were Daniel Rauh, Ellie Clemence, Jonathan Harmeyer, Johnny Stollenwerk, Nick Kroog, Peter Kearney, Will Kearney, Max Mindy, Robert Fuller, & Jack Fitterer.  The Championship Round saw Max Mindy and Nick Kroog face, with Max Mindy as school champ!

SMV Library
Now that the first quarter is over I would like to encourage families to catch up on returning library books. Typically books are due one week after checking them out. It is very time consuming to send reminders so I just continue to encourage everyone to bring back what they have each week, or request to renew it. Thanks for your help with this.

After School Care Coordinator Needed
St. Mary's Visitation Parish School is looking for a friendly, energetic person to work as our After School Care Coordinator. Resposibilities include supervising a support staff member, recording and maintaining usage records, monitoring students arrival and sign out, assisting with snack time and clean up, providing students with play materials, help with homework, and above all, making After School Care a fun place to be at the end of the school day.
The hours are 2:30-6:00 p.m. or until the last child leaves.  We are open every day we have school.

In Appreciation Fund
The In Appreciation Fund will be running until Friday, December 7th!!!! The forms have already been sent home! There is also a link in the Virtual Backpack in case your form gets misplaced. Lets thank our wonderful SMV staff for all they do for our children!

If you have any questions please contact
Rebecca Mindy or Amy Van Ells

If you have had the opportunity to work in the lunchroom this school year, you have certainly met Mr. Andy!  Mr. Andy is one of the two new SMV employees that spend their days in the school cafeteria.  The resume of Mr. Andy is quite impressive.  His career has been in architecture and education, and he also owned a restaurant in Kuwait City.  As a St. Mary's parish member, he has enjoyed getting to know the school children.  We are so fortunate to have Mr. Andy in our lunchroom each day.  He always brings a smile and a cheerful disposition.  Next time you see Mr. Andy, make sure to say hello!

And with that you will find a few things that are Positively SMV!
