Principal Notes                                                    December 19, 2019

Dear SMV Families,

During these last days before Christmas we reflect on the surprising ways in which God has worked in our own lives: relationships repaired, behaviors transformed, illnesses healed, energies rekindled, and hope restored. Let's continue to watch and be grateful for unanticipated gifts, no matter how simple or disguised. Come Emmanuel.

Please join us for mass at 8:00 tomorrow. It is wonderful to see so many parents and grandparents sitting with their children/grandchildren in church. Following mass tomorrow our 2nd grade will be presenting the Living Nativity. Hope you can join us! Dismissal is at 11:00.

This is the last regular Virtual Backpack for 2019.  On Christmas Day, we will have a special edition to share with you. Our regular Virtual Backpack will return on Thursday, January 9th, 2020.

My Christmas wish for you is that you have a peaceful and holy Christmas season. Enjoy the time together with family and treasure every moment. The greatest gift of God's Son is best experienced as family. Enjoy the special liturgies and prayers as well during this season.

May God bless you all!  Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
The school office will close tomorrow at 11:30 and reopen on Thursday, January 2 nd .

*The spirit of Christmas is kindness.

Faithfully Yours,
Mrs. Mary Tretow

Lost and Found
The lost and found table is growing at St. Mary's. Please stop in and see if anything belongs to you and your child.  During the Christmas break the lost and found items will be donated to the SMV Thrift shop.

A request from the school library
Unless your child is in the middle of a good novel, we would like all library books returned before Christmas. It is easy to misplace books over the long break.
Thank you!

Chess Scholars
Chess Scholars will be starting on January 9th.  Chess helps develop your child's intellect. No previous experience is necessary.  To sign up please visit

SMV Office Christmas Tree
Every year we ask the parents to help decorate our Christmas Tree.  If you would like to donate an ornament please put your family name and the year on it. Then, come and look at all the ornaments on the SMV Christmas tree.

Scholastic Book Fair will be coming to SMV in January!  Your child will be able to preview and browse through the books with their classes and create a wish list.  Sales will begin January 24 during the Chili Chomp, during our Open House on Sunday, January 26 and during recess times on January 27-29.  Cash and credit cards (with an adult) will be accepted (and there is tax on all sales).  Keep an eye out for the book fair flyer, wish lists and times for those dates.
Auction News

The SMV Oktoberfest Annual Auction for Education planning is well underway! This premier annual event will be held on March 28, 2020.  Save the date! The auction committee needs your help in making this, SMV's largest fundraiser of the year, our most successful to date! Proceeds from past auctions have been used to support the purchase technology needs, instruments for the music program, air conditioning for the classrooms, a new gym floor, the art teacher salary, classroom spending money for the teachers, and a new playground for our students.
Both Live and Silent Auction donations are needed.   We are looking for tickets (i.e. Packers, Brewers, Admirals, Bucks, Badgers and Marquette), condo stays (local or otherwise), hotel and airline points, concert and event tickets, gift cards, corporate sponsorships, and cash donations! We appreciate your consideration and generosity!
If you would like to donate, but do not have any ideas, check out the Amazon Cart. These items will be used in the raffles and silent/live auction packages.
The auction website is also available for online donations, downloading auction forms, and finding additional information regarding the event. Visit and also feel free to email the 2020 Auction Team with any questions you may have at
With gratitude,
Elizabeth Hagman and Michelle Thomet

Positively SMV

This time of the year the school doors are continually opening with a rush of visitors and volunteers.  Each person that enters SMV is certainly met with the smiling face of Mrs. Kris Dries!  Mrs. Dries is currently our school secretary but has served in many roles- from the K4/K5 aide, to lunchroom supervisor, to the Jr. High art teacher.  Mr. and Mrs. Dries have 3 children that all attended SMV.  The oldest son volunteers his time with the Rock Aqua Jays Water Ski Team- he holds a world record for being part of the world's largest water skiing pyramid!  They have a daughter who is a 6th grade math teacher and a daughter who is a registered nurse in Colorado.
Mrs. Dries loves being part of SMV because of the, "caring teachers, the fantastic faith based education and how it is like a family".  As Mrs. Dries says, "I am so lucky to have a job that I truly love."
Thank you Mrs. Dries for being the smile that greets us each and every day!
