Principal Notes                                                      August 31, 2018

Dear Families,

The first days of school are behind us.  We're settling into a routine that brings us back to busy school days and weekends filled with places to go and things to do, all things vying for our time and attention.  Next week we welcome our K3 students to St. Mary's!

Last week was a week of in-service for the teachers.  The week was filled with welcoming each other back, what we did on our summer vacations, meetings about procedures, curriculum, our goals for this year and many more things that help us prepare for the school year.

This year the Archdiocese of Milwaukee will be celebrating their 175th Anniversary.  Our parish also will be celebrating it's 160th anniversary. In this year we will study and reflect on the history of both, teaching about those individuals in the early years and appreciating their faith, determination , and sacrifices.

Along with that,  we will concentrate on the Seven Catholic Social Teachings.  We will explore with our students, the life and dignity of the human person, the call to family, community, and participation, rights and responsibilities, option for the poor and vulnerable, the dignity of work and the rights of workers, solidarity and care for God's creation. During the next few months I will share with you more on each teaching.

The Archdiocese has asked each teacher to do a "175 Minute Service Challenge" during this anniversary year connected to one of more of these teachings.  Catholic Schools proclaim Christ in everything we do and have a rich history of doing their part, through service , to make a difference in the world. The teachers are being asked to submit this to the Arch.  At our convention this year, in October, all these works from all the teachers in the archdiocese will be shared with us. Later on in the school year, I will share with you the things our teachers are doing in the "175 Minute Service Challenge."

6 th -8 th grade parents, please mark your calendars.  We will have an orientation meeting for you on the evening of Tuesday, September 4 th .  We will begin with a short meeting in the school atrium at 6:30.  Then you will be going to the classrooms and following your child's schedule and meeting each of their teachers.

For all new families to SMV, you are invited to our New Parent Social on Tuesday,  September 18th at 6:30 p.m. Please join us on the school patio for a social to get to know other families.

Just a reminder, there is no school tomorrow or Monday. Enjoy the long weekend!

If you have any questions or concerns, please give me a call.  I am happy to help.

Faithfully,
Mrs. Mary Tretow
Principal

Office Notes
Forms
We are asking that ALL parents, who have not done so yet, fill out the forms as soon as possible.
Please click on the SMV Forms on the left side under Permanent links.  This is necessary for we use these forms for emergency contact information.  This is something that needs to be done at a computer and not on your cell phone.  If you can't do it from your home, please stop in at the school office and we can help.

Playground and Lunchroom Duties
Built into your tuition are several fees such as playground/lunchroom duty and the book and tech fees.  We ask that every family signs up to do six duties of either playground or lunchroom duty or a combination of the two.
To sign up for duties please see the links on the left under permanent links that say Playground duty or Lunchroom duty.
The Hot Lunch/Playground deposit will be refunded once you have completed your six days.
Remember you must sign in at the school office before doing your duty.  This is our and your way of keeping track of how many duties you have done.

Immunization Records
The Archdiocese and the State of Wisconsin requires that we have on file an immunization form for each child.  We are required to do reports to the Arch and the State on how many students are in compliance. There is a box to check if you chose not to have your child immunized. We still need to have the form.

School Library Volunteers
The library schedule is complete and can be viewed as a link in this Virtual Backpack. If you would like to volunteer, please e-mail Ms. Benson with the days and times that interest you. Example: (The second  Friday  of each month at  9:30 a.m. ) Your choice will be confirmed in the next few days.

Why a Dance-A-Thon?
A Dance-A-Thon is easy to host, is a one-time annual event and allows 100% of all donations to stay in with our Home & School Committee. With previous fundraising efforts like magazines and cookie dough, only ~35%* of the proceeds stayed with our Home & School.

Additionally, donations are 100% tax-deductible.

Several schools in the area have moved away from traditional fundraising (magazine, cookie dough, gift wrap) and instead are hosting 100% donation based events. St. Dominic's has been hosting a Dance-A-Thon for over 6 years and raises over $35k/year from this one event. St. Charles Hartland is in their second year of hosting a Dance-A-Thon and is seeing great success in both their fundraising and community building.
(*% contribution to school depends on the type of product sold)
What questions do you have about the SMV Dance-A-Thon? Reach out to the  committee chair, Jen Zils - zilsfamily@gmail.com

Positively
 SMV

It may be early in the school year, but we already are seeing awesome examples of the SMV spirit!
Last weekend, so many of you came out to Sendik's in support of Home and School.  Delicious hamburgers, hot dogs and brats were enjoyed by all with proceeds going to the SMV annual Auction for Education.  Thank you also to the wonderful students and parents (and Deacon Piontek!) who grilled and served!  It was wonderful to see our community come together in support of this great cause.
We also had a group of several students, the Cornell kids, Jeffrey Russell and the Selthafner kids, work together a few weekends ago and host a lemonade stand in support of the St. Hyacinth school supply drive.  They raised over $170 and were able to purchase a full cart load of notebooks, paper, pencils, glue, and many other needed items!  What a great example of everyday stewardship!  Great job kids!

And with that you will find a few things that are Positively SMV!
