Message from the Principal
Dear St. Michael-St. Gabriel Families and Friends, 

Like many of you, we are asking ourselves where the last two months have gone, but ready or not, the first day of school is just around the corner. As a reminder, our annual Back to School Bash will be held next Thursday, August 11th from 5:00-7:00 p.m. This is an opportunity for students to meet their teachers and drop off school supplies. Families will also receive an envelope from the school with our school calendar, the student and family handbook, volunteer opportunities, and access codes to PowerSchool, which is our new Student Information System replacing Jupiter this year. We will also have free and reduced meal forms and aftercare information available for you. If any of these forms are already complete, you are welcome to bring those with you. 

Please note that due to a loss of staff members, we are unable to offer aftercare the first week of school. We will keep you posted as we try to hire for this position. Also, hot lunch will be made available beginning the first day. We will dismiss at 1:30 p.m. on the first day, August 15th. 

Continue to reach out to us with any question you may have, and please be patient as we transition to our new information system and uniform company. We ask that you communicate any issues you may be having so that we can start the year on the right note.

Announcements
PARENT MEETINGS

During our Back to School Bash next Thursday, August 11th, we will be holding two parent meetings. The first is our New Parent Meeting beginning at 5:30 p.m. The second is our Hispanic Parent Meeting, which will begin at 6:00 p.m. Both meetings will be held in St. Michael Church. 
PTA CHAIRPERSONS NEEDED

Once again, we are reaching out to our families to see if anyone may be interested in chairing or co-chairing our PTA this year. It has been over two years since we have had a lead for this committee, and the need is certainly great, especially as we kick off our Walk-A-Thon during the first quarter of the year. If you are interested in learning more, please contact Mrs. Ramos at lramos@indyarchangel.org.
PARENT VOLUNTEER HOURS

This year all families will be required to complete five volunteer hours during the course of the year. There are many ways to complete these hours by attending parent meetings and conferences, but additional opportunities are noted in the attachments found below. Remember that anyone who chooses to volunteer for an event where children are present must be Safe Parish trained. We recommend working on that training now so that you may be ready to help when you would like to chaperone or volunteer for an event.    
AFTERCARE WORKERS NEEDED

St. Michael-St. Gabriel is in need of more aftercare workers for this coming year. General working hours run from 2:45-5:30 p.m. on regular dismissal days and 1:30-5:30 p.m. on early dismissal days when aftercare is made available. If you are interested in learning more about this paid position, please contact Mrs. Ramos at lramos@indyarchangel.org.
Our Back to School Bash is a great opportunity for families to drop off school supplies, pick up items, such as aftercare information and school calendars, and also meet your child’s homeroom teacher for the year.

SNAPCHAT

This Week, Snapchat released a new update that allows users to access another person's exact physical location on the "Snap Map". It also allows the other person to see how far away they are and will even provide driving and walking directions. 

Kids often accept Snapchat friends they have not actually met. Online predators exploit this and use Snapchat to contact their victims due to the disappearing messages and photos. Unfortunately, this new update could further enable stalkers, thieves, and child predators on Snapchat.  

  • How to keep your kids safe...Have kids put their Snapchat into "Ghost Mode" to disable location sharing
  • Turn off precise location in phone settings
  • Create a Family Technology Agreement
  • No tech in kids' rooms at night
  • Wait to give kids access to smartphones and social media

8th Grade Trash Bag Sales

It’s that time of year when we know many of you are beginning to bag up your leaves and clean out your gardens. If you are interested in purchasing trash bags from the school office, we are selling rolls for $11 a piece. All proceeds go to fund the eighth grade class trip. An initial order form was sent home with all students this week, if you are interested in purchasing any.  We do sell these bags throughout the year as well, so you may consider purchasing some in the spring as well.

Box Tops for Education

In case you haven’t heard, the collection of Box Tops is now moving away from the traditional clipping of Box Tops to now scanning your receipt! The new and improved Box Tops mobile app uses technology to scan your store receipt to find participating products and then instantly adds the Box Tops to our school’s earnings online. Simply go to your app store and download the Box Tops for Education app. Then choose St. Michael School (3352 West 30th Street, Indianapolis). It’s easy and saves you time! For more information, click here.
