Dear St. Michael-St. Gabriel Families and Friends,
Next Wednesday begins the Lenten season with Ash Wednesday, and each year, students and adults consider what they may give up during this time, such as eating chocolate, drinking soda, or being on social media too much. While there is nothing wrong with giving up things that take away our time from God and our families, we might want to consider a more positive approach to Lent this year and consider adding something into our lives, such as prayer or even Eucharistic Adoration. Perhaps we haven’t found time in our busy schedules to pray as regularly as we should, so now may be the time for us to consider adding just ten or fifteen minutes of quiet prayer and reflection into our own lives or perhaps even sitting quietly with our Lord during Eucharistic Adoration. Whatever you choose to do, remember that it should be something that helps to bring us closer to God. We will celebrate our Ash Wednesday liturgy at 8:15 a.m. All are welcome to join us.
On Monday, we will be inducting new seventh and eighth grade members into the National Junior Honor Society. These are students who had at least a 3.5 GPA and have illustrated qualities of service and leadership within their community have submitted applications for consideration and will now be inducted into our local chapter. The induction ceremony will take place at 6:00 p.m. in St. Michael’s Church.
Also, as a school, we will be celebrating all of our Valentine’s Day festivities on Tuesday, February 13th, as Wednesday is the first day of Lent, a time in which we are asked to fast and begin our Lenten goals. On Tuesday, students may dress in red or pink tops or Valentine’s Day attire.
To date, 80% of our families have returned their registration packets for next year. Because we have now begun accepting new students, there are some classes that only have a few spots available, and our PreKindergarten will be the first class to fill. I cannot stress enough how imperative it is to turn in your paperwork so as not to risk losing a spot for your child for next year. Please contact us with any questions or concerns you may have.

Queridos Padres y Amigos de San Miguel-San Gabriel,
El próximo miércoles comienza la temporada de Cuaresma con el Miércoles de Ceniza y cada año, los estudiantes y adultos consideran lo que pueden renunciar durante este tiempo, como comer chocolate, beber refrescos o estar demasiado en las redes sociales. Si bien no hay nada de malo en renunciar a cosas que nos quitan tiempo de Dios y de nuestras familias, es posible que deseamos considerar un enfoque más positivo de la Cuaresma este año y considerar agregar algo a nuestras vidas, como la oración o incluso la Adoración Eucarística. Quizás no hemos encontrado tiempo en nuestras ocupadas agendas para orar con tanta regularidad como deberíamos, por lo que ahora puede ser el momento de considerar agregar solo diez o quince minutos de oración en silencio y reflexión a nuestras propias vidas o tal vez incluso sentarnos en silencio con Nuestro Senor durante la Adoración Eucarística. Cualquier cosa que elijas hacer, recuerda que debe ser algo que nos ayude a acercarnos más a Dios. Celebraremos nuestra liturgia del Miércoles de Ceniza a las 8:15 a.m. Todos son bienvenidos a unirse a nosotros.
El lunes, incorporaremos a nuestros miembros de séptimo y octavo grado a la Sociedad Nacional de Honor Juvenil. Estos son estudiantes que tuvieron al menos GPA de 3.5 y han demostrado cualidades de servicio y liderazgo dentro de su comunidad, han presentado solicitudes para su consideración y ahora serán incluidos en nuestro capítulo local. La ceremonia de juramentación se llevará a cabo a las 6:00 p.m. en la Iglesia San Miguel.
Además, como escuela, celebraremos todas nuestras festividades del Día de San Valentín el martes 13 de febrero, ya que el miércoles es el primer día de Cuaresma, un momento en el que se nos pide ayunar y comenzar nuestras metas de Cuaresma. El martes, los estudiantes pueden vestir con blusas rojas o rosas o con vestuario del Día de San Valentín.
Hasta la fecha, el 80% de nuestras familias han devuelto sus paquetes de inscripción para el próximo año. Debido a que ahora hemos comenzado a aceptar nuevos estudiantes, hay algunas clases que solo tienen unos pocos espacios disponibles y nuestro Pre Kindergarten será la primera clase en llenarse. No puedo enfatizar lo suficiente lo imperativo que es entregar la documentación para no correr el riesgo de perder un lugar para su hijo para el próximo año. Por favor contáctenos con cualquier pregunta o inquietud que pueda tener.

IREAD-3 Testing
In March, students in Grades 2 and 3 will be taking the Indiana IREAD-3 exam. Earlier this month, the state released their findings that thousands of Indiana students are entering Grade 4 without the foundational reading skills that are needed to succeed the rest of their educational career. Each year, we have hard conversations with families about where their children may be academically, and while retention is always a last resort, please know that continuous work both at home and school, especially in reading, is needed for students to be successful and to progress forward. Our teachers are working to prepare our students for this exam, and any third grade student who does not pass initially will have an opportunity to take the exam again in May. As always, it is our hope to have all students pass and move on to the next grade. Also, know that those students in Grade 2 who pass the exam this year will not have to take the exam as a third grader. Any second grader who does not pass this exam this year, however, will wait to take it again next March.
EXAMEN DE IREAD-3
En marzo, los estudiantes de 2 y 3 grado tomarán el examen de Indiana IREAD-3. A principios de este mes, el estado publicó que han encontrado que miles de estudiantes de Indiana entran al 4 Grado sin las habilidades de lectura fundamentales que son necesarias para tener éxito en el resto de su carrera educativa. Cada año, tenemos conversaciones difíciles con las familias sobre dónde pueden estar académicamente sus hijos, y aunque la retención es siempre el último recurso, sepa que el trabajo continuo tanto en el hogar como en la escuela, especialmente en lectura, es necesario para que los estudiantes tengan éxito y puedan progresar. Nuestros maestros están trabajando para preparar a nuestros estudiantes para este examen, y cualquier estudiante de tercer grado que no pase inicialmente tendrá la oportunidad de tomar el examen nuevamente en Mayo. Como siempre esperamos que todos los estudiantes aprueben y pasen al siguiente grado. Además, sepa que aquellos estudiantes de segundo grado que aprueben el examen este año no tendrán que realizar el examen como estudiantes de tercer grado. Cualquier alumno de segundo grado que no apruebe este examen en este año, sin embargo tendrá que esperar a volver a realizarlo el próximo marzo.

8th Grade Trash Bag Sales
It’s that time of year when we know many of you are beginning to bag up your leaves and clean out your gardens. If you are interested in purchasing trash bags from the school office, we are selling rolls for $11 a piece. All proceeds go to fund the eighth grade class trip. An initial order form was sent home with all students this week, if you are interested in purchasing any. We do sell these bags throughout the year as well, so you may consider purchasing some in the spring as well.
