| A Note from Fr. Rick
Dear St. Michael's Family,
Hopefully by now you have had time to read my letter sent earlier today informing you that our Sunday services for the March 22nd and March 29th are cancelled, but we'll have worship online.
With the intention to practice social distancing and yet provide a time of corporate prayer for the next two Sundays March 22nd and 29th we will NOT gather in the church building but virtually online for Morning Prayer with homily at 10:15.
Just four weeks ago on Ash Wednesday we began our observance of Holy Lent with the invitation to self-examination and repentance; to prayer, fasting and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God's holy Word.
I imagine none of us expected Lent to be "imposed" upon us; to have self-denial, self-sacrifice, and fasting to be chosen for us, yet this is where we are, Lent is real, and let us not forget that Lent is Holy. Despite all the uncertainty we are facing, may we be reminded of the invitation of observing a Holy Lent-to return to God with all our hearts where we'll discover the mercy, grace, forgiveness and love of God who "hates nothing He has made." God is here, with us.
The office staff and clergy are here, so for emergency situations, parishioners are invited to communicate with a priest, deacon or available staff by phone or by email.
We'll continue to send updates when necessary.
Our prayers and love are with you.
In Christ's love,
Greetings in the name of our Lord!
As I'm sure you are experiencing, this is a time unlike any other, at least in my lifetime.
There is uncertainty all around, thankfully our hope is in the Lord, who never changes.
I've been checking in with our ministry partners over the past few days to see what the needs are and how we can help. Here's what we know for sure:
The Coalition for the Homeless has suspended volunteer activities until further notice. Our efforts with the Gathering will continue as we are able. The group is taking precautions while they cook and the food is delivered to the Coalition and unloaded and served by them.
This ministry would welcome any additional donations as the amount of people we are feeding will certainly increase in the coming weeks.
Getting Food to Kids:
OCPS has announced Grab and Go Meal distribution centers for Orlando. Students will receive lunch for that day and breakfast for the next morning.
The closest pickup to St. Michael's will be Edgewater High School. For more information visit
Lake Silver Elementary, College Park Middle, and Edgewater High School
As this week is Spring Break we have not been able to speak with our on campus contacts. We want to make sure that folks that are in need for other meals are helped as possible, weather that be through support via Feed My Lambs or us supporting One Heart for Women and Children. We will send you an update next week.
Many experts are predicting an increase in Domestic Violence as a result of people spending more time in isolation at home. In addition, the children in Harbor House's residential program are no longer in school so they are spending 24 hours a day at the family shelter. Their immediate needs are similar to our lists for the schools: canned food, snack food, cleaning supplies, however they are in dire need of
larger size diapers and wipes. These items can be dropped off directly
at their office, 708 E Colonial Dr #201, Orlando, FL 32803. Just give them a call at 407-886-2856. (If you would like to let us know so we can keep track of donations, that would be great!)
One Heart for Women and Children:
This organization (right around the corner from us) has experienced triple the number of clients requesting assistance. They also are in need of all the items mentioned above. You can drop off items between 8-4 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and 8-2 on Saturday at their office, 2040 N Rio Grande Ave, Orlando, FL 32804.
As Father Rick has mentioned, the absolute best way to help our outreach efforts in a time where things are changing from one day to the next, is to continue your faithfulness and financial support. In this manner you enable to respond quickly to needs that arise in our own community and beyond.
|Lenten Bible Challenge: A 40-Day Journey Through Matthew
Lent is an invitation to spend 40 days walking alongside Jesus, listening to His life-changing teachings, and falling more in love with God through self-examination and repentance; prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God's holy Word.
You're invited to rediscover Christ anew by reading through the Gospel of Matthew in 40 days. You'll cover approximately 30 verses each day for six days a week and then take Sunday as a day of rest. This requires intentionality and may require fasting 10 minutes a day from Facebook, Twitter, cable news, or ESPN to reflect on God's "love letter" to you.
