What is Faith?

Fr. Anthony Hughes

In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, one God. Amen.

Glory to Jesus Christ!

The father was surprised that the disciples were unable to heal his son, but undeterred he turned to Jesus. The Lord’s response was blunt. He lumped his impotent disciples together with what he calls a “faithless and perverse generation” and exclaims, “How long am I to bear with you?” When the disciples ask why they were unable to heal the boy the Lord’s response was direct, “Because you have no faith.”

So we must ask ourselves, “What is faith?”

First, faith is not an emotion or a feeling. It is not a kind of excitement we whip up inside ourselves like people when they get worked up about a football game, a good meal, romance or rock concert. It is not the same thing as belief although belief must have an element of faith in it. Belief is how we try to explain and express our faith. Belief is the way we explain what it is we have come to accept as true. But faith is more than an unshakable adherence to a list of beliefs. It is much, much more than that and often includes the letting go of the same propositions since the more we grow in faith the more they fail to express the deep truths we discover. Faith that does not grow and change is not a living faith and cannot, therefore, be an authentic faith in the Living God.

Faith is above all a personal relationship with God. It is the opening of the eye of the soul and of the heart to see what cannot be seen, to know what cannot be known. Faith above all is communion with the Divine, the transformation of our mortality into immortality, the deification of human flesh, the transfiguration of the mind.

In all of us faith is partial, incomplete and often inadequate. We need to enter more and more deeply into a relationship with God which demands a humbling of ourselves, a dying to ourselves, a crucifixion of the mind. It is risky. Faith leads us into uncharted territory, into a mystery that cannot be explained or described. The only power we have, once we have begun, is the power to stop or continue; other than that we cannot determine what will happen along the way. That can be a scary thing. To come closer to God is to realize more and more just how distant we are. It is a paradox. Fr. Hopko says, “God cannot be known, but you have to know Him to know that.”

So what do we do? We take the plunge. We allow ourselves to swim away from shore, from what we think we know so well into the deep waters where we know nothing, where there is nothing to hold on to, where it might just be too far to swim back if we get tired. That is faith. To swim away from shore, to let go of our boats, our life-preservers, our safety nets is where faith becomes real. Faith is ultimately the trust that God is really there and that our fear of the unknown is really only a lack of faith. Casting aside our fears we keep going. Then we learn as we swim out into the deep that the strength to reach the shore comes just when we need it. The Zen masters say, “Jump and the net will appear.”

Perhaps this quote from a modern saint, Joseph the Hesychast will give you an idea of what I mean.

“At last, I was completely changed, and forgot myself. I was filled with light in my heart and outside and everywhere, not being aware that I even had a body.”

Key in this quote are the three words, I “forgot myself.” The Elder had made himself a living sacrifice, holding nothing back, letting everything go for the sake of being in Communion with God. What would come as a result he did not know, but he did find out. The Elder passed from mere belief about God to faith in God, a living experience beyond his imagination, quite beyond his control.

When the endless activity of the mind halts in adoration, the senses are completely taken over, infused with divine light and the physical body becomes no longer heavy and cumbersome, but luminous and filled with divine energy, then we know we are in deep water, over our heads, in that unpredictable territory where the only thing is God who is all in all. Completely at His mercy we come to realize what faith really is.

Faith is communion.

In the hymns for the Feast of the Transfiguration we chant these words:

Those of us who long to see

that inexplicable beauty,

let us acquire hearts

in which we shall receive its shining.

Leaving behind the desire for this world, its pleasures, its distractions we prepare our hearts to open to God. Stripping away all idolatrous images, our opinions, our smallness we at last find the door upon which the Lord of All has been knocking and knocking.

The mystic poet writes:

Deafened by the voice of desire

You are unaware that the Beloved lives

In the core of your heart.

Stop the noise and

You will hear His voice

In the silence.

This is the path of faith.

~Hymnography of the Day~

Commemorating the Forefeast of the Procession of the Honorable and Lifegiving Cross of the Lord, Righteous Joseph of Arimathea, Righteous Eudocimus of Cappadocia, St Germanus Bishop of Auxerre, Hieromartyr Benjamin Metropolitan of Petrograd and Gdovsk and those with him, St Arsenius Bishop of Ninotsminda, Martyr Julitta at Caesarea

RESURRECTION TROPARION—TONE 1

When the stone had been sealed by the Jews, while the soldiers were guarding Your most pure body, You rose on the third day, O Savior, granting life to the world. The powers of heaven therefore cried to You, O Giver of Life: “Glory to Your Resurrection, O Christ! Glory to Your Kingdom! Glory to Your dispensation, O Lover of mankind!”

PROCESSION OF THE CROSS TROPARION—TONE 1

O Lord, save Your people, and bless Your inheritance! Grant victories to the Orthodox Christians over their adversaries. And by virtue of the Cross, preserve Your habitation!

HOLY FATHER NICHOLAS TROPARION—TONE 4

Truly you were revealed to your flock as a rule of faith, a model of meekness and a teacher of temperance. Your humility exalted you; your poverty enriched you. O Hierarch Father Nicholas, intercede with Christ God that our souls may be saved.

ST. EUDOCIMUS TROPARION—TONE 4

He Who called you from earth to heaven keeps your body unharmed after death, holy Eudocimus; for you lived a sober and holy life and did not defile your flesh; so with boldness intercede with Christ that we may be saved!

RESURRECTION KONTAKION—TONE 1

As God, You rose from the tomb in glory, raising the world with Yourself. Human nature praises You as God, for death has vanished. Adam exults, O Master! Eve rejoices, for she is freed from bondage and cries to You: “You are the Giver of Resurrection to all, O Christ!”

HYMN TO THE MOTHER OF GOD KONTAKION—TONE 6

Steadfast Protectress of Christians and constant Advocate before the Creator; despise not the cry of us sinners, but come speedily to help those who call on You in faith. Hasten to hear our petition and to intercede for us, O Theotokos, for You always protect those who honor You!

DEACON: Wisdom!

READER: The Reading is from the Epistle of the Holy Apostle Paul to the Corinthians.

DEACON: Let us attend!

READER: Brethren, for I think that God has displayed us, the apostles, last, as men condemned to death; for we have been made a spectacle to the world, both to angels and to men. We are fools for Christ’s sake, but you are wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are distinguished, but we are dishonored! To the present hour we both hunger and thirst, and we are poorly clothed, and beaten, and homeless. And we labor, working with our own hands. Being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we endure; being defamed, we entreat. We have been made as the filth of the world, the off scouring of all things until now. I do not write these things to shame you, but as my beloved children I warn you. For though you might have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet you do not have many fathers; for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel. Therefore I urge you, imitate me.

PRIEST: Peace be unto you, reader!

READER: And with your spirit! Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!

CHOIR: Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!

READER: God gives vengeance unto me, and subdues people under me.

CHOIR: Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!

READER: He magnifies the salvation of the King and deals mercifully with David, His

anointed, and his seed forever.

CHOIR: Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!

LITURGY GOSPEL:

Matthew 17: 14-23

At that time, when they had come to the multitude, a man came to Him, kneeling down to Him and saying, “Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and suffers severely; for he often falls into the fire and often into the water. So I brought him to Your disciples, but they could not cure him.” Then Jesus answered and said, “O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I bear with you? Bring him here to Me.”  And Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of him; and the child was cured from that very hour.

Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why could we not cast it out?” So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.  However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.” Now while they were staying in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men, and they will kill Him, and the third day He will be raised up.” And they were exceedingly sorrowful.

Tenth Resurrection Gospel: John 21: 1-14

At that time, Jesus showed Himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias, and in this way He showed Himself: Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together.  Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We are going with you also.” They went out and immediately got into the boat, and that night they caught nothing.  But when the morning had now come, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus.  Then Jesus said to them, “Children, have you any food?” They answered Him, “No.” And He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish.

Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment (for he had removed it), and plunged into the sea.  But the other disciples came in the little boat (for they were not far from land, but about two hundred cubits), dragging the net with fish.  Then, as soon as they had come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid on it, and bread.  Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish which you have just caught.” Simon Peter went up and dragged the net to land, full of large fish, one hundred and fifty-three; and although there were so many, the net was not broken.  Jesus said to them, “Come and eat breakfast.” Yet none of the disciples dared ask Him, “Who are You?”—knowing that it was the Lord.  Jesus then came and took the bread and gave it to them, and likewise the fish. This is now the third time Jesus showed Himself to His disciples after He was raised from the dead.

Homily on the Transfiguration of our Lord, Jesus Christ

St. Nikolai of Žiča

In the third year of His preaching, the Lord Jesus often spoke to His disciples of His approaching passion but at the same time of His glory following His suffering on the Cross. So that His impending passion would not totally weaken His disciples and that no one would fall away from Him, He, the All-wise, wanted to partially show them His divine glory before His passion. For that reason, He took Peter, James and John with Him and, with them, went out at night to Mt. Tabor and there was transfigured before them: “And His face shone as the sun and His garments became white as snow” (Matt. 17:2). There appeared alongside Him, Moses and Elijah, the great Old Testament prophets. And, seeing this, His disciples were amazed. Peter said: “Lord, it is good for us to be here: if You will, let us make here three tabernacles; one for You, one for Moses and one for Elijah” (Matt. 17:4). While Peter still spoke, Moses and Elijah departed and a bright cloud overshadowed the Lord and His disciples and there came a voice from the cloud saying: “This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased; hear Him” (Matt. 17:5). Hearing the voice, the disciples fell to the ground on their faces as though dead and remained that way, lying in fear, until the Lord came near to them and said: “Arise and be not afraid” (Matt. 17:7).

Why did the Lord take only three disciples on Tabor and not all? Because Judas was not worthy to behold the divine glory of the Teacher, Whom he will betray and the Lord did not want to leave him [Judas] alone at the foot of the mountain so that the betrayer would not, by that, justify his betrayal. Why was our Lord transfigured on a mountain and not in a valley? So as to teach us two virtues: love of labor and godly-thoughts. For, climbing to the heights required labor and height represents the heights of our thoughts, i.e., godly-thoughts. Why was our Lord transfigured at night? Because, the night rather than the day is more suitable for prayer and godly-thoughts and because the night, by its darkness, conceals all the beauty of the earth and reveals the beauty of the starry heavens. Why did Moses and Elijah appear? In order to destroy the error of the Jews, as though Christ is one of the prophets; Elijah or Jeremiah or some other that is why He appears as King above the prophets and that is why Moses and Elijah appear as His servants. Until then, our Lord manifested His divine power many times to the disciples but, on Mt. Tabor, He manifested His divine nature. This vision of His Divinity and the hearing of the heavenly witness about Him as the Son of God, should serve the disciples in the days of the Lord’s passion, in strengthening of an unwavering faith in Him and His final victory.

Stewardship Reflection

Reflection from St. John Chrysostom...

When a tailor makes and sells a garment, only one service is performed, that of putting clothes on the body. The same is true of the cobbler making and selling a pair of shoes; the only service in this case is to put shoes on the feet. But when a person makes a gift to another person, of money or some object, a double service is performed. First, the receiver derives a material benefit from the gift. Second, the giver derives a spiritual benefit because this act of generosity would have brought a blessing to his soul.

Zoe for Life

Many women are fortunate to have the love and support structure to lead them to marriage, children, and a meaningful life. Others, however, are from different circumstances, and may find themselves in crisis because of an unplanned pregnancy. Their situation may have them in turmoil and panic, where healthy decisions are difficult to make. ZOE for Life!® serves as a conduit, guiding women to a wider range of support organizations, providing an attractive set of options and a promising outlook on their situation. There is counseling, housing referral assistance, referral for prenatal care, adoption and other services available for which most women in distress are unaware. It is the goal of ZOE for Life!® to offer more opportunities to women in unplanned pregnancies, and to empower them to make decisions everyone can live with. ZOE for Life!® is a pan-Orthodox outreach of Orthodox Christians. It is funded privately, and has received 501(c)(3) status from the Internal Revenue Service. All gifts are tax-deductible as specified by law.
