Homily on the Twelth Sunday after Pentecost
Fr. Anthony Coniaris
In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit...
Glory to Jesus Christ! Glory be forever!
A person accidentally slipped and fell of a cliff. On the way down he grabbed hold of the branch of a tree and remained suspended there. He started praying as he had never prayed before: “Lord, save me! Lord, Lord!” Suddenly the Lord answered, “Yes?” The man pleaded, “Save me, Lord!”
“Have you attended Church?” asked the Lord.
“Yes, I did whenever I could, but I promise never to miss if You will save me.”
“Have you kept the ten commandments?”
“Yes, as much as I could. I promise to obey them to the letter if You will save me.”
“Have you said your prayers every day?”
“Yes, Lord, but just get me off the side of this cliff and I’ll be the best praying man in the world.”
“Have you given generously to the work of my Church?”
“Yes, I think I have, but I’ll give even more generously in the future. Just get me off the side of this cliff.”
“Do you trust Me?”
“Yes, Lord, of course I trust You — completely.”
“Then let go the branch.”
Let go the man-made crutches you hold onto. Replace them with a tight grip on God.
Let go the sin that has possessed you. It seems that we become so accustomed to our sins that we feel comfortable with them and refuse to let go.
Let go that hatred. How many times have we heard people say, “I’ll do anything for You, Lord, but just don’t ask me to forgive so-and-so.”
Let go that alcoholism. A short time ago there was a convention of Alcoholics Anonymous at the Leamington Hotel. Three thousand well-dressed, dignified persons attended the banquet — all of them former alcoholics. Those who had remained dry for one year were asked to stand up. Then two years, then three. A fellow priest who was there told me that it was the most inspiring sight he had ever seen. All of those people had been brought back from death to life because they had let go the branch, the bottle, and trusted God.
The rich young man in today’s Gospel lesson came to Jesus seeking eternal life. Knowing that his besetting sin was love of money, Jesus prescribed the remedy: “Sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” The Gospel says that “when he heard this he became sad, for he was very rich. Jesus looking at him said, ‘How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God!” In other words, how hard it is for those who become so attached to their riches, so enslaved to their material possessions, that they cannot let go because their possessions have become their god.
Like the young man in today’s Gospel lesson, how many there are today who want everything that Christ has to offer: forgiveness, peace, assurance of life eternal with God — but they don’t want to let go their false gods, their besetting sins.
So, the Lord asks us today:
“Do you trust Me?”
We reply,
“Yes, Lord, we trust You.”
“Then let go,” He says. “Let go the demons, let go the death that is within you.”
We reply prayerfully,
“Lord, I let go trusting that You will bring me back to life.”
That we may glorify You, together with Your Father, Who is from everlasting, and Your All-Holy, Good and Life Creating Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Commemoriating the Afterfeast of the Dormition of the Mother of God, Saints John and George Patriarchs of Constantinople, Saints Barnabas and Sophronius of Asia Minor, Saint Christopher of Gazara, Martyrs Florus and Laurus of Illyria, Martyrs Hermes, Serapion and Polyaenus of Rome, Hieromartyr Emilian and with him Martyrs Hilarion, Dionysius and Hermippus, Venerable Macarius the Monk of Pelekete, Repose of Venerable John Abbot of Rila, Venerable Sophronius of Saint Anne Skete Mount Athos, Venerable Arsenius of Paros, 4 Ascetics, Venerable Christodoulos the Philosopher
RESURRECTIONAL TROPARION—TONE 3
Let the heavens rejoice! Let the earth be glad! For the Lord has shown strength with His arm. He has trampled down death by death. He has become the first born of the dead. He has delivered us from the depths of hell, and has granted to the world great mercy.
HOLY DORMITION TROPARION—TONE 1
In giving birth you preserved your virginity, in falling asleep you did not forsake the world, O Theotokos. You were translated to life, O Mother of Life, and by your prayers, you deliver our souls from death.
HOLY FATHER NICHOLAS TROPARION—TONE 4
Truly you were revealed to your flock as a rule of faith, an image of humility and a teacher of abstinence; your humility exalted you; your poverty enriched you. Hierarch Father Nicholas, entreat Christ our God that our souls may be saved.
VENERABLE JOHN OF RILA TROPARION—TONE 1
Your life was a foundation of repentance and a model of compunction, an image of consolation and spiritual perfection, equal to the angels, O venerable one. You persevered in prayer, fasting and tears, O Father John; intercede with Christ God for our souls.
RESURRECTION KONTAKION—TONE 3
On this day You rose from the tomb, O Merciful One, leading us from the gates of death. On this day Adam exults as Eve rejoices; with the Prophets and Patriarchs they unceasingly praise the divine majesty of Your power.
HOLY DORMITION KONTAKION—TONE 2
Neither the tomb, nor death could hold the Theotokos, who is constant in prayer and our firm hope in her intercessions. For being the Mother of Life, she was translated to life by the One who dwelt in her virginal womb.
INSTEAD OF “IT IS TRULY MEET”
The angels, as they looked upon the Dormition of the Virgin, were struck with wonder seeing how the Virgin went up from earth to heaven. The limits of nature are overcome in you, O pure Virgin; for birth-giving remains virginal and death is united to life; a virgin after childbearing and alive after death, you ever save your inheritance, O Theotokos.

READER: The Reading is from the first Epistle of the Holy Apostle Paul to the Corinthians.
DEACON: Let us attend!
READER: Brothers and Sisters, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures, and that He was seen by Cephas, then by the twelve. After that He was seen by over five hundred brethren at once, of whom the greater part remain to the present, but some have fallen asleep. After that He was seen by James, then by all the apostles. Then last of all He was seen by me also, as by one born out of due time. For I am the least of the apostles, who am not worthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not in vain; but I labored more abundantly than they all, yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me. Therefore, whether it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed.
PRIEST: Peace be unto you, reader!
READER: And with your spirit! Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!
CHOIR: Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!
READER: In You, O Lord, have I hoped; let me never be put to shame!

LITURGY GOSPEL: Matthew 19:16-26
At that time, one came and said to Him, “Good Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?” So He said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments.” He said to Him, “Which ones?” Jesus said, “‘You shall not murder,’ ‘You shall not commit adultery,’ ‘You shall not steal,’ ‘You shall not bear false witness,’ ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ ” The young man said to Him, “All these things I have kept from my youth. What do I still lack?” Jesus said to him, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions. Then Jesus said to His disciples, “Assuredly, I say to you that it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. And again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” When His disciples heard it, they were greatly astonished, saying, “Who then can be saved?” But Jesus looked at them and said to them, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

FOR SALE (BENEFITS THE MORTGAGE)
Matushka Z’s Very Russian Looking Hat is a children’s book (suited for all generations) written by St. Nick’s very own, Jane Svitchan and illustrated by Sheena Hisiro who grew up going to Christ the Savior OCA. Jane is a long-time, very generous, member of our parish and is also the author of Herman My Love, Mishka the Mouse, and The Dishpan that Glowed. All are available at the Gift Shoppe Table in the Lobby. All are autographed, some have a bow and pencil. Previously all proceeds from the sale of the books were donated to the Church, the Mothers Club, or the Fr. Srboljub Fund, and now will benefit the effort to pay off the church mortgage. Jane has generously gifted several copies of Matushka Z and tea towels featuring Grisha, the rat, a character in the story. This combination will be part of a special sale of $27 until after Christmas 1/7/26 (after Nativity it will be $30). Books alone are on sale for only $18 (will be $20 after Nativity).
FUNDRAISER FOR SHADELAND
A generous donor has given us a gift of surplus food, which includes brand name frozen pizza!! PLEASE visit the table in the Social Hall and take what items you or someone you know can use. Then make a Monetary Donation of what you can. Help someone in need and Save money at the same time! Remember to check the table every time you are at church as supplies will change frequently. ALL monetary donations will go to support our St. Sava Shadeland Camp!!! See Terry Govelovich to purchase the frozen pizzas.
SHADELAND COLLECTION
The operation of our St. Sava Shadeland Camp has been subsidized by the Diocesan Endowment for the Future. This endowment was based upon the royalties we received from natural gas and oil wells and is now depleted. Currently, we no longer have any reliable income from these wells. Camp fees have been kept artificially low due to these royalties. This means that there is a deficit of $150,000 to run the camp each year. Additionally, there are approximately $225,000 in repairs and maintenance that will be necessary in the next 3 years. The Diocese is asking for donations to offset the operating costs. These donations may be given directly to the Diocese, to our local church here at St. Nicholas, by renting Shadeland Camp for your event, or purchasing a hunting license, thus increasing annual revenue. Checks can be made payable to St. Nicholas Church with Shadeland in the memo and given to our Church, or go to easterndiocese.org to donate directly to the Diocese.

August Charity
Zoe for Life
Many women are fortunate to have the love and support structure to lead them to marriage, children, and a meaningful life. Others, however, are from different circumstances, and may find themselves in crisis because of an unplanned pregnancy. Their situation may have them in turmoil and panic, where healthy decisions are difficult to make. ZOE for Life!® serves as a conduit, guiding women to a wider range of support organizations, providing an attractive set of options and a promising outlook on their situation. There is counseling, housing referral assistance, referral for prenatal care, adoption and other services available for which most women in distress are unaware. It is the goal of ZOE for Life!® to offer more opportunities to women in unplanned pregnancies, and to empower them to make decisions everyone can live with. ZOE for Life!® is a pan-Orthodox outreach of Orthodox Christians. It is funded privately, and has received 501(c)(3) status from the Internal Revenue Service. All gifts are tax-deductible as specified by law.
