Sunday after Holy Theophany

Христос Међу Нама! Christ is in our midst! Cristo esta' entra nosotros!

Homily on the Sunday after Theophany

By Fr. Christopher Rocknage

In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit…

God is Revealed!

Бог се Јави!

Dios se revela!

The world lives in darkness…do we?

The regions of Zebulon and Naphtali by the sea—Galilee of the Gentiles—Christ comes to dwell in the land of broadening darkness. Zebulon, which translates to nocturnal, and Naphtali, which translates to a broadening road, show this quite plainly in this Gospel of Matthew as well as the Prophecy of Isaiah which precedes it. Yet Christ dwells in the city of Capernaum – literally the comfort of consolation—in this darkness.

Whether it be on the internet, at the market, at work or school, or at play, we confront a broadening road of sinful darkness. We make choices each and every day to either live in this darkness or to live in the Light of Christ.

Here in these United States of America, we live in a place of increasing homelessness, increasing sexual trafficking, increasing pornography, increasing use and normalization of mind-altering substances be it drugs or alcohol, and increasing identification of the self with sin. We live in a land of broadening darkness. Our choices made in this land reflect whether we walk in darkness, or we walk in the light. The currency of our lives is time. How we “spend” our time reflects whether we choose to live in darkness or light.

The world wants us to choose darkness. One has only to look at a new prescription available as a nasal inhaler. Its main purpose is to combat loneliness. The idea that one should combat loneliness by engaging with others is utterly rejected. The idea that human beings are social—that they only find fulfillment, purpose and joy in relation to others—is rejected in favor of a drug-based solution that can be marketed and sold to others.

We can choose to buy into this framework…and stay in darkness…and remain afraid…

Or we can choose to spend the currency of this life, our time, with Christ—the Light of the World.

Our Lord, God and Savior, Jesus Christ, gives us the narrow way of Light.

A life lived in the Holy Orthodox Church is a life lived in Christ. The demands Christ makes upon all who follow Him include loving the Lord our God with all of our soul, with all of our mind, with all of our strength, loving our neighbor as our self, and denying our self, taking up our cross and following Him.

How much effort does it take for us to make worship our number one priority each week? How much effort does it take for each of us to look out for our brothers and sisters? If we as a church congregation—all prepared for and received the Holy Mysteries each week, lives would be changed. We would no longer allow for there to be lasting disagreements or grudges between family members, be they blood related or spiritual. We would take time each week to check in on shut-ins, the ill, the orphaned, the widowed. We would no longer fear the possibility of danger, living not for this world, but for the world to come.

This is what we find when we choose to live the Life in Christ into which we were baptized. This is what we find when we rely upon the Holy Spirit whose gifts have been sealed into us when we were chrismated. This is what we find when we choose to love God first above all and to love our neighbor as our self.

May the Light of Christ Jesus, the Lord, God and Savior of the world, illumine each of our hearts, revealing that the darkness of the world is nothing to fear—just as we reveal to our children that there are no monsters in the closet when we turn on the lights. May we embrace His Light, choosing to live in it each and every day. May we walk in His Light, becoming beacons of Light and Love for the world—inviting all to the comfort of the consolation present in Christ, so we may all glorify Him, together with His Father, Who is from everlasting, and His Holy and Life-Creating Spirit, now and forever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

RESURRECTION TROPARION — TONE 6

The angelic powers were at Your tomb; the guards became as dead men. Mary stood by Your grave, seeking Your most pure body. You captured hell, not being tempted by it. You came to the Virgin, granting life. O Lord, Who rose from the dead, glory to You.

THEOPHANY TROPARION - TONE 1

When You, O Lord, were baptized in the Jordan, the worship of the Trinity was made manifest. For the voice of the Father bore witness to You, calling You His Beloved Son; and the Spirit in the form of a dove confirmed the truthfulness of His word. O Christ our God, You have revealed Yourself, and have enlightened the world, glory to You!

HOLY FATHER NICHOLAS TROPARIONTONE 4

Truly you were revealed to your flock as a rule of faith, an image of humility and a teacher of abstinence; your humility exalted you; your poverty enriched you. Hierarch Father Nicholas, entreat Christ our God that our souls may be saved.

RESURRECTION KONTAKION - TONE 6

When Christ God the Giver of Life, raised all of the dead from the valleys of misery with His mighty hand, He bestowed resurrection on the human race. He is the Savior of all, the Resurrection, the Life, and the God of all.

THEOPHANY KONTAKION - TONE 4

Today You have shone forth to the world, O Lord, and the light of Your countenance has been marked on us. Knowing You, we sing Your praises. You have come and revealed Yourself, O unapproachable Light.

Instead of “It is truly meet,” we sing: Tone 2

Magnify, O my soul, the Most-Pure Virgin Theotokos, more honorable and more glorious than the heavenly hosts.

No tongue knows how to praise you worthily, O Theotokos; even Angels are overcome with awe praising you. But since you are good, accept our faith; for you know our love inspired by God. You are the defender of Christians, and we magnify you.

Therefore He says: “When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive, and gave gifts to men.” (Now this, “He ascended”—what does it mean but that He also first descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is also the One who ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things.) And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.

LITURGY GOSPEL:

Matthew 4:12-17

At that time, when Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, He departed to Galilee. And leaving Nazareth, He came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the regions of Zebulun and Naphtali, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: “The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, by the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles: The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and upon those who sat in the region and shadow of death Light has dawned.” From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

MATINS GOSPEL:

Ninth Resurrection Gospel: John 20:19-31

At that time, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, “Peace be with you.”  When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.”  And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.  If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” Now Thomas, called the Twin, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came.  The other disciples therefore said to him, “We have seen the Lord.” So he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.” And after eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, “Peace to you!”  Then He said to Thomas, “Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing.” And Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.
