BY THE GRACE OF GOD

BISHOP OF EASTERN AMERICA

OF THE SERBIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH

Most beloved Clergy and Monastics, Sons and Daughters,

faithful Children of the Eastern American Diocese of our Most Holy Church!

It is with abounding gratitude emanating from a paternal heart,

that We greet you on this most auspicious occasion

in our collective ecclesial history:

THE 60TH ANNIVERSARY OF EPISCOPAL CONSECRATION

OF BISHOP STEFAN OF EASTERN AMERICA AND CANADA

THE SERBIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH

13 JULY 1963-2023

“He who is greatest among you,

let him be as the younger,

and he who governs as he who serves.”

(Luke 22:26)

On the solemn commemoration of this, the 60th Anniversary of the Election and Consecration to the Holy Episcopate of His late Grace, the Right Reverend Bishop Stefan of Eastern America and Canada, We offer due tribute to one of Our most esteemed predecessors on the Throne of the Bishops of Eastern America. Elected by the Holy Assembly of Bishops on May 11, 1963, this wholly dedicated servant of God, heeded his apostolic summons: ‘He who is greatest among you, let him be as the younger, and he who governs as he who serves’ (Luke 22:26). As such, Bishop Stefan, who reigned from his consecration on the Feast of the Synaxis of the Holy Apostles, July 13, 1963, to his untimely death on May 10, 1966, dutifully served in fulfillment of the same.

At the time of his election to the Episcopate, the Serbian Orthodox Church in the United States of America and Canada found itself in utter turbulence. With three nascent Dioceses having been formed out of the singular American-Canadian Diocese, the express task at hand was the consecration and enthronement of three worthy candidates to their Episcopal Sees. Of the three Dioceses, only one Diocese, the Eastern American and Canadian, found itself without a See, and only trust in God, that the guiding Archpastoral Right Hand of their new bishop would ensure a certain future.

The historic election of the first Bishop of Eastern America and Canada fell upon the shoulders of Protopresbyter Stefan Lastavica, at the time, parish priest in Windsor, Ontario. By his election, the Holy Assembly of Bishops chose to elevate a man of great dignity, a renowned musicologist, whose resonant voice marveled all who heard the same, an avid educator and, among numerous other admirable qualities, a proven and capable administrator. Summoned to join the Table of Hierarchs, with neither residence nor diocesan center, nor even administrative personnel, his was, indeed, the daunting task of reconstituting a fragmented group of parishes, with an insufficient number of clergy to service them, and establishing functional diocesan bodies. Thus, constituting the Diocese of Eastern America and Canada, come Diocese of Eastern America.

Bishop Stefan, took to heart the advice of the Holy Apostle Paul to his disciple Timothy: ‘Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through prophecy when the body of elders laid their hands on you. Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress’ (I Tim. 4:14-15). He set about organizing all necessary diocesan bodies and, in due time, succeeded in filling vacant parishes by ordaining four candidates to the holy priesthood. Through his diligent labors and efforts, a new church-school congregation was established in London, Ontario. Bishop Stefan blessed three churches, three schools, five parish homes and two church halls. After three years, he moved the See of the Diocese from Clairton, Pennsylvania to Cleveland, Ohio. Thereby, proving that progression and stabilization were proceeding in all areas of diocesan life. Soon, Bishop Stefan’s health began to decline. Afflicted with great concerns, stress, and, most of all, by the unfortunate situation in which our Church found itself on this continent, he passed from this life, in hope of Resurrection, to Life Eternal at the age of 58.

His remarkable episcopate, albeit only three years in duration, fulfilled a lifetime of service, leaving behind a stable local Church – the Diocese of Eastern America and Canada. His good deeds, truly, will live on to the close of the Age. Assured that he has, in verity, heard the words of our Savior:

‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things: Enter into the joy of your Lord’ (Matt. 25:23). May Bishop Stefan remember us before the Throne of Almighty God, as we prayerfully remember him with profound and abiding appreciation.

May his Memory be Eternal!

With Archpastoral blessings and paternal love,

   +IRINEJ

We Can Bring Forth the Needs of People to God

St. Anthony of Sourozh

In the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

A man was brought to the Lord Jesus Christ, paralyzed, by four of his friends. And Christ, seeing their faith, said to him that he could be healed.

There are two things in this story which I would like you to think about. The one is that this man was ill, he was in need; perhaps he was unable either to express his need, or to express the faith that he had in the possibility of healing; but his friends had faith: faith in Christ, faith in His power to heal, to make whole. And they took this man and brought him to the Lord.

But their faith would not have been sufficient; many were paralyzed, many were sick who did not find friends who would bring them to the healer. It is not only their faith in Christ, it is also their love to their friend that prompted them to act. And again, it is because this man, in the years when he was whole, was able to call out love, friendship, devotion, faithfulness in their hearts that in the hour of need they came to his rescue.

Here are two lessons for us; the one is that we can bring forth the needs of people — physical, spiritual and other needs; we can bring forth their needs to God if we have faith in His healing power, and our faith can open the gates of salvation for those who perhaps have not enough faith, who might not even be able to say, ‘I believe, Lord, help my unbelief — those who doubt, those who hesitate, those who are uncertain that we can bring them to the Lord. But this is possible only if the person in need has created in us, called out in us love; a love so personal, so faithful that we prove capable of acting. Or perhaps, if our life in Christ is deep enough that God has sawn into our hearts so much of His own compassion, of His own love that we can turn to the unknown, turn to whom we have never heard of, prompted by nothing but by his or her need, and bring him or her to God unto salvation, unto healing.

We must remember both the necessity for us to become capable of love and capable of calling out love around us. And also we must learn to have the daring of faith when we see need around us, and bring it to the Only One Who can resolve it, Who can heal, Who can make whole not only bodies, and minds, and souls, but the complex relationship between people.

Here is a calling, here is a vocation for us; let us pay attention to what God says to us in this Gospel, in this Good News of the power of love, divine and human, and the power of faith to which God’s love and mercy responds. Amen.

LITURGY GOSPEL:

Matthew 9: 1-8

At that time, He got into a boat, crossed over, and came to His own city.  Then behold, they brought to Him a paralytic lying on a bed. When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, “Son, be of good cheer; your sins are forgiven you.” And at once some of the scribes said within themselves, “This Man blasphemes!” But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts?  For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Arise and walk’?  But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins”—then He said to the paralytic, “Arise, take up your bed, and go to your house.”  And he arose and departed to his house. Now when the multitudes saw it, they marveled and glorified God, who had given such power to men.

MATINS GOSPEL:

Sixth Resurrection Gospel: Luke 24: 36-53

At that time, Jesus Himself stood in the midst of them, and said to them, “Peace to you.” But they were terrified and frightened, and supposed they had seen a spirit.  And He said to them, “Why are you troubled? And why do doubts arise in your hearts?  Behold My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself. Touch Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see I have.” When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His feet. But while they still did not believe for joy, and marveled, He said to them, “Have you any food here?”  So they gave Him a piece of a broiled fish and some honeycomb. And He took it and ate in their presence. Then He said to them, “These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me.” And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures. Then He said to them, “Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.  And you are witnesses of these things.  Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.” And He led them out as far as Bethany, and He lifted up His hands and blessed them.  Now it came to pass, while He blessed them, that He was parted from them and carried up into heaven.  And they worshiped Him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and were continually in the temple praising and blessing God. Amen.

Stewardship Reflection

In today's Epistle to the Romans, we reflect upon the gifts we are blessed with. Not everyone is the same and with those who have comparable gifts, some are much greater.

I can complete very basic household projects while my neighbor can add an addition to his home all by himself. God's concern is not on this difference but that we each exercise our gifts to their fullest. We will be judged on our works so however small we believe our gifts to be, we must use them!

· The lights at the park are 4 foot, 2-bulb fluorescent fixtures and we need 4.

July Charity

Monastery Marcha

On July 26, Monastery Marcha celebrates its Slava, the Synaxis of the Holy Archangel Gabriel, so it is fitting that the monastery is our Charity Sunday recipient this month. It is the first monastery established for Serbian Orthodox nuns in the United States and was begun in 1975 by His Grace, the late Bishop Dr. Sava. Its inspiration was the original 17th century Monastery Marcha of Serbia, destroyed by war twice in the 20th century. From modest beginnings, Monastery Marcha has grown. In addition to the new monastery church erected in 2001, there is a residence and lodgings for visiting monastics. The weekly Divine Liturgy is celebrated by nearby clergy. Mother Anna, of blessed memory, was the first American-born Serbian Orthodox nun who took residence at Monastery Marcha, and we, at St. Nicholas Church, counted Mother Anna as our dear friend. We have been blessed to have had her visit with us. Monastery Marcha’s main income is derived from the sale of candles, prayer ropes and other religious articles. If you travel to the Cleveland, Ohio area, plan to visit Monastery Marcha in nearby Richfield. It is a beautiful and uplifting spiritual site and visitors are welcomed with great warmth and hospitality.

You can send an email to the Monastery at [email protected]
