From the Rector
By the Rev. Donna S. Mote, PhD
Dear People of St Paul’s,
Grace and peace.
I hope to see as many of you as possible in person or via Zoom for the annual meeting of the parish of St Paul’s this Sunday, January 30 just after the conclusion of the 10 AM Eucharist.
We need thirty (30) folks whose memberships are at St Paul’s to have a quorum.
If you wish to attend via Zoom, the meeting information (link, meeting ID, and passcode) are below my signature here and in the announcements section of The Epistle.
My thanks to Sarah Kindinger for volunteering to prepare the materials for the annual meeting and to Mike Kindinger for organizing the AV logistics to make it possible for those present to see and hear those participating via Zoom and vice versa.
And my thanks as always to Tim Peterson, Ken Bagge, and Dean Warden for all the ways they attend to countless numbers of details that facilitate the graceful flow of all manner of things on the St Paul’s campus and in our congregational life. If everything looks great and works fine, we usually have those three to thank.
Particularly, as we draw nigh to the annual meeting, which is the day when some members of the vestry officially end their terms and others are elected to take their places, I want to say once again a hearty thank you to the members of the St Paul’s Vestry Class of 2022.
Ray Warden has steadfastly labored far more hours than probably anyone other than his husband and I are aware attending to innumerable details that make the proper functioning of the parish possible. I and we owe him a tremendous debt of thanks for keeping everything at St Paul’s, Key West between the ditches for more than two years as senior warden. The job of senior warden is a formidable one in “normal times,” whatever those are, much less than during a global pandemic without a priest. Thank you, Ray.
Kim Grizzle-Malgrat has been not only a faithful member of the vestry in carrying out all the duties of a vestry member these past three years—everything from approving budgets and reports to calling a new rector—but also brings enormous love and devotion to her service on the altar guild and to her early-morning assistance (along with Mickey) on Sundays preparing for the 7:30 AM Eucharist. In the summer months of 2021, she was, pretty much single-handedly, the altar guild. She is also a lay reader and a eucharistic visitor. Thank you, Kim.
Samantha Hall has also exercised faithfully all those duties of a vestry member these past three years. In addition, Sam has been one of the principal officiants of morning and evening prayer via Facebook Live for the past two years. This remarkable ministry which began online during pandemic lockdown has been beautifully and devotedly continued by Sam, Lisa Laskow and Bruce Hagemann, with assistance from Mary Simmons, Tim Peterson, and Sarah Hall, day after day, week after week, month after month. Thank you, Sam.
Please join me in expressing thanks to all these folks. It’s a great blessing for me to serve alongside so many faithful Christ followers down here at the end of the road.
With you on the journey,
Donna+

Senior Warden's Report
By Ray Warren
My time is your Senior Warden has come to an end. Or, more precisely, will at the
annual meeting on January 30.
It was an extraordinary time to inadvertently be immersed in church administration. In the past few years, we had the church completely shut down, then open under very limited circumstances before totally reopening. We were without a resident Rector almost a year. Then we called a Rector, and all of us have been
immersed in the process of getting to know her and moving forward under her leadership.
In my final missive, I want to say thank you to everyone who worked as a team to keep St Paul moving forward during the challenging times. And most especially thank you to those of you who personally encouraged me, worked with me, and uplifted me.
Do not be surprised if you continue to see me quite often on the church campus, in the office, or otherwise at church functions. I am (gladly) giving up the task of being the Senior Warden. But, I am not giving up various ways of being a lay volunteer.
I organize and manage the other volunteers who count contributions and make bank deposits. I also supplement the work of our office administrator, who now works remotely from a different state, by doing tasks that can only be done in the office.
In addition, I am, at the moment, a repository for continuity. I know how most of our office processes work, our relationship with vendors, and the history of what happened in the last two years. So, for a short-term I'll still be transferring knowledge and
experience to others, including our new Rector.
I'm so grateful to Becky England for becoming the newsletter editor. Over time we will recruit more people to volunteer in the office and as contribution counters. A strong community does not rely on any one or two people. I look forward to handing off other
responsibilities and actually seeing what it's like to be retired soon. But I’ll still be around for the foreseeable future as a volunteer.
Please be aware that many of the things that I did, and may continue to do, are not tied to the task of being Senior Warden. The new Senior Warden will be the Rector's "wingperson" - offering advice and expertise and guidance. But she or he is not expected to take up many of the other volunteer tasks that I or others may have done in the past or may do in the future. Being Senior Warden is a major task in itself.
St Paul's has a bright future. Pray for our Rector and pray for the new Senior Warden and our continuing Junior Warden. Good days are ahead.
