St. Paul's Episcopal Church

This Week's News Highlights

Our Service This Week

Holy Eucharist on Facebook and for those in person will be at 8:30AM on Sunday. See below for how to attend by either mode of participation. Please consider the current state of the pandemic in making your decision about attending this service, or any other, in person. Facebook Live continues to be a safe and meaningful way to join in worship each Sunday.
The Passing of a Beloved Parishioner

Charles ("Chuck") Hammond died at his home on March 13th. A longtime leader and fixture at St. Paul's, his passing is mourned by the entire community.

Born in 1929, Chuck grew up in Canton, Illinois. He received a scholarship in high school to attend the University of Illinois. From there he had a distinguished career culminating in the position of chief economist for the Import/Export Bank in Washington, D.C.

After more than thirty years in the nation's capital, Chuck moved to Key West in 1992.

At St. Paul's Chuck was most visible, especially to seasonal visitors and friends, as an usher. For as long as many can remember attendance at St. Paul's meant seeing Chuck, or fellow usher Don Curry, at the back of the church.

Chuck was also a behind the scenes leader. He was a former member of the vestry, assistant parish treasurer, head of the tellers who counted money after services and president of the Damascus Fund, one of the two endowment funds that support the work of the church (and the upkeep of our very old buildings).

Chuck fell in his home in January, but after several months of convalescence in Miami, he had recently returned home to his partner and companion, Joseph Lyles. He died unexpectedly, but peacefully in his home with Joseph.

Chuck is survived by Joseph and several nieces and nephews. When arrangements are announced for a memorial service, we will forward the information. In addition, if a formal obituary is published this newsletter will include a link to it.
Into your hands, O merciful Savior, we commend your servant Charles (“Chuck”) Hammond

Search Committee Progress Report

The Search Committee has extended its advertising for another month to receive more resumes. The Committee has already identified several strong candidates, but there appears to be strong interest in the position and the committee will take full advantage of that fact.

Candidates will be invited to visit Key West soon. Beyond noting the general progress, the work of the Search Committee is entirely confidential. So let us all unite in prayer and thanksgiving, trusting the committee in this important work.
Please Buy A Brick and Build a Legacy

Brick sales are going well! Please consider joining in this project. You can order your brick(s) here.
Sunday's Service

Join us Sunday for Holy Eucharist at 8:30AM. Sign up in advance to attend in person (see above) or join us on Facebook.

To join via Facebook, go to the church Facebook page at the appropriate time and look for the window showing that "St. Paul's Key West is now live". Click on the window. (You may need to refresh the page a few times if the "live" window does not appear promptly at the appointed time.)

Did you know you DO NOT need to have a Facebook account to view the service or visit our Facebook page? Simply use the Facebook page link to go directly to our Facebook page (even if you don't have your own Facebook account). Follow the directions above.

You can open or download the bulletin for the Sunday service here.

To attend a Sunday service (or a Holy Week service) please send an email to info@stpaulskeywest.org indicating the following information:

  • Your name and the names of any family or household members who will attend with you.
  • Your email address
  • Your cell phone number

Email is greatly preferred, but reservations can also be made by calling the church office at 305-296-5142. If nobody answers please leave a message with the information.

(Walk-ins will be accommodated if space allows but please pre-register whenever possible.)
Junior Warden's Report
By Greta Philips-Ford
I can’t believe it’s been a year!  Featured in this week’s photo opportunity is Ken and Edmund working on re-stringing the lights in the Garden. They have placed the lights on a timer so the lights illuminate the Garden and walkway at night adding more security to our property.
The benches have all been repainted and are looking fresh for Easter.
This week we will gather at the current rectory (not the historic rectory)
located at 3524 Riviera Drive for some spring cleaning at 9:00. If you have never been to the rectory on Riviera, Saturday is your day to play tourist and come see the property!

(Note. This is in new town, not the church campus. Street parking is available.)
I am in need of some help with a “basket” project for a raffle/auction. I can provide the baskets and items to go in, I just need a creative person to whip it in shape and another to develop the “raffle/auction”.

I will also need palms for Palm Sunday and flowers to flower the Cross for Easter. If anyone is interested in helping to arrange or has plants that need a good pruning, let me know!

I look forward to seeing you on Saturday—masks required.
Senior Warden's Report
By Ray Warren

Many of us have received or will receive our vaccines soon. (I am scheduled for Sunday after church.... in Marathon! It is a road trip, but I am happy to take it.)

With the vaccines, we expect attendance at Sunday services to tick up. We still have capacity, but it might get close to the 48 approved capacity before our seasonal members begin leaving for the summer. We may also approach capacity on Easter Sunday.

Please, please, please, let us know in advance if you plan to attend any services. You can email the office or call and leave a message at the office. Be sure to include the needed information: the name of each person who will attend, and a phone and email contact for each person.

We often receive emails simply saying "John Smith" wishes to attend on Sunday. We really need the full information. Not having it in advance slows down seating and prolongs potentially unsafe interaction in the back of the church before services.

If you attend on any given Sunday, please indicate to the usher if you intend to return the next Sunday. That is all you need to do, but without your affirmative statement you may not appear on the list the following Sunday. Once our capacity is reached we'll have no choice but to not allow entry for those not on the list. We really do not want to be in that situation.

Huge kudos to the church webmaster, Jim McCloud, who keeps our website not only looking good, but in good order. Jim and his wife Pamela moved to the mid Atlantic area last year, but they continue to be seasonal visitors to Key West, and Jim graciously continues his important volunteer digital work. If you haven't visited the website recently, take a moment and do so.

----
Don't forget, we have a NEW challenge. A couple has made a commitment of $500 toward a new flagpole for the church contingent on raising $500.00 from others. Let's do it! I'm in. Together we can continue the progress toward restoring our property as a premier corner in old town Key West. To contribute to this effort send your check with "Flagpole Fund" on the memo line or in the "instructions to seller" in your online contribution. We need $300.00 more to make the project work.
Please Pledge Today

We are up to 33 families formally pledging their support for St. Paul's
If you have not done so already, please join in affirming your commitment to St. Paul's. Every person counts. You can find more information about pledging here.

Thank you.
