Julian of Norwich

Lenten Book Study

Mondays beginning February 23

As part of our preparation for Fr. Luis’ sabbatical, we will be reading Revelations of Divine Love by Julian of Norwich. Written in the 14th century, Julian’s Revelations record and meditate on a series of visions (or “shewings”) she received during a grave illness in her early 30s, visions of God’s suffering and love revealed in Jesus. After her recovery, Julian dedicated herself to the life of an anchorite at the church of St. Julian’s in Norwich, England, and years later committed these shewings to writing, producing the earliest known book in English written by a woman.

Julian’s visions are principally of Christ’s suffering and crucifixion, and yet what is revealed to her is the glory, tenderness, and providential care of God’s love for each human being. In our gatherings we will read the text together and also explore the religious, historical, and social context of Julian and her world. Our aim is not only study, but prayerful engagement, to contemplate Christ’s suffering, and to reflect on God’s love for us and for the world.

We will meet on Monday evenings in Lent, beginning February 23. Evening Prayer will be said at 6:00 pm in the Chapel, and we will gather for our sessions at 6:30 pm. With a break in Holy Week and Easter Week, the course may extend a week or two into Eastertide. Because the sessions build on one another, this is not a drop-in course and will entail a commitment to attend each session from the start.

Copies of Revelations of Divine Love will be available to participants. Ten copies are currently available and more are on order. Please contact Michael Cava or Fr. Luis with any questions or to request a copy of the book.
