Rector's Note

1.23.24

It’s all anyone in religious circles has been talking about: Did you hear the sermon that the Rt. Rev. Mariann Budde, Episcopal Bishop of Washington DC, gave on Tuesday at the Inaugural Prayer Service at the National Cathedral? Did you hear what she said, directly to President Donald Trump, who was sitting right in front of her?

The little video where she asks President Trump to “ have mercy on the people in our country who are scared now” is all over the internet. In response I’ve heard her described as courageous, faithful and “badass.”

An Overview of Our Warm Regards Campaign

The Warm Regards Campaign, originally launched in May 2023 to help the church cover the costs of brand new energy efficient boilers, has been extremely successful with its goal.

The campaign has rendered a fruitful surplus thanks to parishioner donations and a matching grant incentive from an anonymous donor. The campaign ended up surpassing the original $150,000, by $78,000 and ended sooner than projected.

Feb. 2 Adult Forum: Humor is the Best Medicine

We all want a healthy lifestyle and well-being. Taking charge of our emotional well being is just as important as diet and exercise. Studies show that laughing, smiling and being positive can help you live longer, help treat depression, promote creativity, encourage productivity and change stressed into desserts.

Dr. Joel Schwartz will lead a discussion during adult forum to help us learn about the physical and emotional benefits of humor and how to apply it to your life, your education, your work and your relationships.

Anthem Spotlight

Let Heavenly Music Fill This Place

“I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving.”

- Psalm 69:30

“Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing.”

- Psalm 100:2

Gordon Young (1919-98) is one of the most prolific Choral composers that America has seen. Having written hundreds of beautiful anthems, there is hardly a church choir that has not sung his music. This week, the St. Peter’s Choir will offer Let Heavenly Music Fill This Place, originally written for the First Baptist Church of Reidsville, N. C. This is an area which was somewhat spared during the recent hurricanes, but it has seen its share of treacherous weather since the composition in 1975.

Young studied organ in Philadelphia at the Curtis Institute, but is best known as a church musician. Over 800 works for Choir and Organ have been credited to his labors. This piece, while less complex in style, is nonetheless vibrant and inspiring. It was written for 4-part harmony, but the majority of the work is sung in unison. The organ introduction sets the spirit with rising and falling chordal scale passages. The Choir enters with similar, yet different, unison writing. The Anthem is designed in A-B-A format. An opening section; a variation by upper voices in the middle and then a return to the main theme with full Choir. Interestingly, the text summons the ‘harmonies of heaven’ to be heard….but they are saved until the final closing section.
