Anthem Spotlight
The Gift of Love
|
The Gospel for Sunday, January 19, tells us the story of the wedding feast at Cana. Through the years marriage has been considered an expression of great love. It seems fitting that Jesus’ first public miracle would take place at a celebration of love. In addition to the story in John 2, texts in I Corinthians further illustrate the importance of spiritual love as the ultimate goal for all.
Hal Hopson is an American composer who has woven a beautiful tune around this theme. It has become one of the most popular hymns of the late 20th century, as well as a well-received choral anthem. Mr. Hopson is a Texas native who has had more than 1300 compositions published. On any given Sunday, somewhere in the world one of his works is being heard in a Church. This is not a common occurrence in today’s world. Aside from being a prolific composer, Mr. Hopson has taught at many institutions of higher learning including Westminster Choir College in Princeton.
The Gift of Love is a beautiful creation that can work well in various media - solo, choral or congregational hymns. Its versatility is part of its great popularity. It was first written as a two-part choral piece but was suggested to be included in hymnals much later. Today it is found in hymnals of many denominations. Our Anthem is written for Soprano, Alto and Baritone (combined Tenor and Bass) and has both independent sections as well as harmonically blended parts. It is a reminder to all that God’s love comes to us through Christ and the Holy Spirit. There are no shortcuts, but rather one direct path for us all to reach Him.

Donate to the Food Pantry |
Thank you to all who so faithfully donate to our food cupboard. Your contributions are very much appreciated.
We have seen the need for food increase in the past months. Our shelves are often almost bare, and there is little in our stock closet to fill them. If you haven’t been a regular donor, please consider our neighbors with food insecurities. The holidays are especially tough on some.
We are in great need of soup and proteins (tuna, chicken, stew, Spam)
Thank you for your support,
Audrey Kipphut and Rick DeKalb.
