One Choir Camp Session Down—One to Go!
|
|
The first session of choir camp with Zippy Hood, Director of Children’s Choirs, was so much fun! Campers played games and enjoyed some musical activities while getting to know each other (and Ms. Zippy!). We’ve got one more choir camp session, and all children entering 2nd–12th grade are invited!
This is a great way for those thinking of signing up for choir to get a sneak peek of our program and a great refresher for those returning.
Canterbury and St. David Choirs (4th-12th grades)
Saturday, August 27: 10:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m.
St. Cecilia Choir (2nd and 3rd grades)
Saturday, August 27: 11:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m.

As promised, Fall Children's Choir

Open Door: A Missionary Ministry
Volunteers to open the church doors to visitors every weekday in the fall
|
|
Did you know that you could be a missionary by standing at the door of the church? St. Philip’s Open Door is a missionary ministry operating out of our own church, in our own city, ministering to people who come from all over this nation and the world, many of whom are curious about our faith.
On July 26, volunteers gathered with Elizabeth Bowles, Brian McGreevy, and Penn Hagood in the sanctuary to hear about the rich history and architectural meaning of St. Philip’s Church and to learn how to be part of the Open Door Ministry, sharing the knowledge and love of Christ with others. Just as Jesus taught in parables or stories that painted descriptive images of spiritual lessons, so the church, Christ’s body in the world, models his example and uses visual imagery to convey spiritual Truth. Our church offers a powerful example of his salvation story.
This fall, we plan to open the church doors to visitors and seeking souls every day of the week. There will be additional classes open to all so that everyone might learn about the glorious story our church tells and the inspiring history in which her members have taken part.
If you are interested in being part of St. Philip’s Open Door Ministry, please contact Elizabeth Bowles at (843) 364-0810 or epbowles2@comcast.net or Penn Hagood at (843) 709-9803 or pennhagood@gmail.com.

St. Philip’s Leadership Opposes Cumberland St. Development in Letter to Mayor, City Council, Others
|
|
Rendering by Bello Garris Architects of the 21-unit Cumberland St. condominium project scheduled to break ground later this year.
Landmark Partners, a Baltimore development company, aims to soon begin the first phase of construction on a four-story condominium project on Cumberland Street between Church and State Streets, directly across the street from St. Philip’s Parish House.
With the approval of the wardens and vestry, the St. Philip’s leadership sent a letter in opposition to the project to Mayor John Tecklenburg; City Councilman Mike Seekings; City of Charleston Board of Architectural Review Chair John Robinson; City of Charleston Director of Planning, Preservation, and Sustainability Robert Summerfield; the Historic Charleston Foundation; and the Preservation Society of Charleston.
|
|
Will You Speak Up?
Letters Strongly Encouraged!
|
|
Please take a moment to write to these elected representatives and staff to express any concerns you may have about this proposed project, which might include such things as:
- failure to include St. Philip’s in the planning and approval process for the project
- the inappropriate nature of the design for our historic neighborhood
- the faithful stewardship St. Philip’s has exercised for centuries to maintain and enhance the sacred beauty of our church and its environs.
Your communication will be most effective if you express your feelings in your own words.
- John J. Tecklenburg, Mayor—tecklenburgj@charleston-sc.gov, P.O. Box 652, Charleston, SC 29402
- Boyd Gregg, Charleston City Council District One Councilmember—greggb@charleston-sc.gov, 80 Broad Street, Charleston, SC 29401
