ECW September Board Meeting:

Ladies of St. Philip’s, You’re Invited!

Tuesday, September 13, at 8:00 a.m. in the Parish Hall

Did you know that all women members of St. Philip’s are members of St. Philip’s ECW (Every Church Woman)? Its leadership is composed of an elected executive committee, directors, and ad hoc committees, and its chief goal is to promote Christian fellowship and growth for all women of St. Philip’s through Bible studies, dinners with guest speakers, and service opportunities. All ladies of St. Philip’s are encouraged to attend the monthly board meetings.

Questions about the ECW? Contact Caroline Fitzgerald, ECW president.

New Mothers Committee: The ECW is looking for a few volunteers to serve on the New Mothers Committee. This committee helps women transition from “expecting” to “mothering” by providing a meal, prayers, and encouragement. The new mothers and fathers always appreciate any break they can get! Please contact Gigi Dobbins at gigimccartydobbins@gmail.com if you’d like to help!

Theology on Tap

Tuesday, September 13, at 7:00 p.m. at Henry's on the Market

About Theology on Tap: Theology on Tap is a bi-weekly gathering for young adults in Charleston who long for meaningful conversation about life and God. We’ll be meeting again Tuesday, September 13, at 7:00 in the Whiskey Room at Henry’s on the Market for drinks (cash bar), apps (provided), and conversation. Next week's topic is "The Real Jesus For Real Life," and we will be connecting what Jesus actually said to our day-to-day lives.

At each of our meetings, we welcome your questions, which you can submit anonymously through a texting app. Free parking at the church parking lot is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Bring a friend!

We will continue our biweekly schedule through the fall, so if you can't make it September 13, be sure to stop by September 27!

Godly Grandparenting Matters:

The Gift of Mac and Cheese

by Kyle Hasbrouck, Chief Operating Officer of Compass: Finance God’s Way. Originally published on compass1.org. Used with permission.

My son, Cash (yes, his name is Cash), had been wanting to earn more money to purchase the essentials of a 9-year-old: candy, video game bucks, and Pokémon cards. But I knew if I continued to give my hardworking son odd jobs around the house, I would soon be bankrupt. Fortunately, a divine opportunity appeared. One of our wonderful neighbors asked Cash to mow the lawn. (He agreed to add me as part of his mowing team on a voluntary basis.)

Cash did a great job, and the money started piling in. He was getting $20 each time, sometimes making $80 a month! I was really proud of him. He would faithfully put 10% in his Giving jar, 10% in the Savings jar, and the rest was for spending. He would never touch or ask to use the Giving jar for something else. The problem was ... he wasn’t sure where or how to give it. I encouraged him to think of things that he was excited about and could help people. But I just got the wide-eyed blank stare.

Hosts Needed for International Guests

A Request from Our Diocese

Sept. 16–18 ~ Sept. 25–28 ~ October 1–3

St. Philippians, we have an opportunity to show hospitality to bishops who will be in the area for the New Wineskins Conference later this month.

The diocese is able to provide accommodations at Camp St. Christopher for the bulk of the visit, but they are in need of hosts for the weekends bookending that time, as well as for the most pressing period: Sunday, September 25, through Wednesday, September 28. Are you able to host one or more visiting bishops in your home for any or all of that time? If so, please email the Rev. Bob Lawrence at robert.stratton.lawrence@gmail.com.

Volunteer Opportunity: Front Desk Ministry

Shifts available September 19–30

Does your heart jump with eager anticipation when you hear a phone ring? Do you long to utter the words, “Please hold while I transfer you”? Are you curious about what St. Philip’s is like during the week?

Consider volunteering for a shift at the front desk! Front desk volunteers answer the phone (no worries, we’ll walk you through the steps), greet people who come to meet with clergy or staff with a warm St. Philip’s welcome, and partake of all the yummy St. Philip’s coffee they could ever want. And there are usually plenty of goodies left over from Bible studies or Wednesday night dinners to munch on!

We’ve set up coverage openings for morning and afternoon slots Monday, September 19, though Friday, September 30, in order to facilitate some much-deserved time away, but even a couple of hours of your presence would be a huge blessing! Click the link below or call the church office at (843) 722-7734 to sign up.

Twinning is Winning at St. Philip's!

Dorothy Lancaster, Director of Ministry to Children and Families, and Rachel Murphy, Executive Assistant to the Rector, have worked across the hall from each for over a year now, which is apparently the amount of time it takes for coworkers to begin accidentally dressing alike.

Last Tuesday, Dorothy and Rachel both arrived at work in black pants and cream-colored blouses with tiny black polka dots and ruffled sleeves. The very next day, they chose black, short-sleeved, knee-length dresses to accomplish their "twinning" look.

The odds were against a coincidental third day of twinning, and indeed, those of us who clung to the hope of being yet again fashionably entertained were disappointed when Dorothy arrived on Thursday in a striped top and Rachel in floral.

If you follow St. Philip's on Facebook or Instagram, then you already knew about last week's OOTD excitement. If you don't follow St. Philip's...why not? Take a minute now to get connected so that you will always be among the first to hear about upcoming events, schedule changes, and the staff's wardrobe choices.
