The Youth Group Big Game:
“Your Mom” Takes Down “Sally’s Favorites”
| |
Saturday, November 12, was the day of the Big Game, when members of St. Philip’s middle- and high-school youth groups battled it out at the Horse Lot on Chisolm St. for the highest flag football honors.
They split into two co-ed teams: Your Mom and Sally’s Favorites (named for youth minister David Gilbert’s mother). Gilbert shared that conditions were “tough”: players had to deal with the blue skies, warm weather, organic “landmines” (canine excrement), and a whole lot of trash talk. “The horse lot may not house horses anymore,” said Gilbert, “but the dogs have taken over and dug holes, left 30 tennis balls, and created a new adventure for flag footballers.”
Although Sally’s Favorites, led by captain Patrick Bergstrom, put up a good fight, it was Your Mom, captained by quarterback John “Kid Flash” Settle, who reigned victorious with a score of 42-28.
The St. Philip’s youth group meets up every Friday at 6:00 p.m. (middle school) and Sunday at 6:00 p.m. (high school) in the Parish Hall for games, a teaching, and fellowship. Participants do not need to be members of St. Philip’s to attend. Other outings, service projects, and missions are scheduled throughout the year. Please contact David Gilbert at dgilbert@stphilipschurchsc.org if you have any questions.

Another Home Missions Volunteer Opportunity
Gift Card Angel Trees in the Narthex November 27–December 11
| |
On Sunday, November 13, our high school youth group and their fearless leaders enjoyed supper provided by Home Missions team member Becky Barber and got to work making ornaments for the angel trees! The handmade ornaments will be your gift (or reminder) for your gift card donation.
The St. Philip’s Home Missions Team is continuing its tradition of helping brighten the Christmas season for those in need in the Charleston area by collecting $25-gift cards to Walmart, Target, and Family Dollar. This year, the gift cards will be collected for clients and community members of two of our ministry partners, Lowcountry Pregnancy Center and Star Gospel Mission. Visit stphilipschurchsc.org/home-missions to learn more about our partners, and click the link below to volunteer to collect gift cards on a Sunday morning or Wednesday evening before or after worship.

On Monday, November 14, Home Missions Team members and a few of St. Philip’s own Citadel graduates volunteered to serve a meal prepared by chef Connie Stahl to cadets at the Citadel’s St. Alban’s Chapel before their Monday evening service. The Never-Ending Perks of Sextonhood | |
Cecilia Walchesky, our young sexton-in-training, has appeared in enough eSPIREs that you surely have noticed that she's got herself a pretty cushy gig: she sets her own hours, gets chocolatey bonuses from several of her coworkers, and never gets in trouble if she's caught napping.
Plus, whenever she goes beyond the call of duty, she enjoys some extra perks. Just yesterday, she helped Rachel Murphy cover the front desk for a little while. Her reward? A spoonful of Harris Teeter creamy peanut butter and permission to browse all the pictures of sleeping kitty cats on Rachel's phone.
| If you follow St. Philip's on Facebook and Instagram, then you already knew what our sexton-in-training was up to yesterday. But if you're just now hearing about it, don't you think you should take a moment to follow us so that you can be among the first to hear about upcoming events, weather-related schedule updates, and the lifestyles of the young and employed? | |
