St. Philippians and Neighbors Make Big Impact at Summer Blood Drive
|
|
The rain was falling steadily on Tuesday, June 28, but we still managed to collect 42 units at our summer Red Cross blood drive. Each unit can save up to three lives––that’s up to 126 lives saved at a time when blood supply is at a 10-year low!
Although we fell just shy of our collection goal of 45 units, Home Missions Team member Connie Rink noted that many of our faithful donors were traveling, and Coastal South Carolina Regional Account Manager Brandon Kenney pointed out that the weather could have affected walk-ins and presented traffic challenges to some donors. He chalked our total up as “a solid win”!

Get to Know Our New Children's Choir Director!
|
|
My name is Zippy Hood, and I am the new children’s choir director at St. Philip’s Church. I am excited to meet all of you and make glorious music to honor our God. I have an extensive choral and instrumental background, teaching both in the private and public sector. St. Philip’s has been my home church for many years, and I grew up participating in both the children and adult choirs. I am married to Billy, my high school sweetheart, and we have a beautiful 10-month-old baby girl named Elizabeth (“Libby”), who put the “Labor” in Labor Day this past September. Lastly, we have a handsome spotted pointer/hound mix named Hunley. I am thrilled to be here and show you the joy of combining music and worship together.

CPR/AED Course
An invitation from Doug Ringer
Saturday, August 6, 10:00 a.m. ~ St. John's Chapel, Hanover St.
|
|
I recently taught a CPR/AED course St. John’s Chapel, an Eastside mission church of our diocese. St. John’s has begun the process of buying one or two automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and requested the training for their staff and ushers. I will be teaching a second class at St. John’s on Hanover St. at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 6. They would be delighted to have some of our congregation attend the training session.
This is just like the previous sessions we have had at St. Philip’s. Although you will not receive certification, I guarantee that if you pay attention and take part in the hands-on training, you will know what to do in the event of a cardiac emergency.
The CPR portion will be “hands only”––we will not teach rescue breathing as a part of the CPR process. The only physical requirement will be getting down on the floor to practice the CPR and use the AED.
How to Sign Up
We have four spots available for St. Philippians. If there are more who are interested, I’ll schedule another date for training in the near future. please contact me at ringdoug@gmail.com to sign up.
Below: Doug Ringer instructs the Rev. Jeff Miller and the Rev. Bill Christian during a CPR/AED course last October.

Frappuccino and Theology with the Rev. Bill Christian
|
|
On Thursday, June 30, Amy McGreevy hosted the summertime version of High Tea and Theology in her Mt. Pleasant home: Frappuccino and Theology!
The delicious iced coffee drinks were the perfect refreshment on a characteristically humid summer day in Charleston, and they paired beautifully with freshly baked cookies from Kudzu Bakery. With the calming classical music in the background and the engaging theological discussion led by the Rev. Bill Christian, no one wanted to leave!

Prayer Request for the St. Philip's Choir
|
|
The St. Philip's Choir is heading to London in August to serve as the resident choir at St. Paul's Cathedral! They appreciate all the support you've given them by worshipping with them at evensong, donating to and attending the art auction in January, and more––and now, as they enter the final stretch before their journey and as they travel in August, they covet your prayer support.
O God, whom saints and angels delight to worship in heaven: Be ever present with your servants on earth who seek through art and music to perfect the praises of your people. Grant them even now true glimpses of your beauty, and make them worthy at length to behold it unveiled for evermore; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (Book of Common Prayer 2019, page 650)

How did you celebrate International Joke Day on July 1?
We celebrated the only way we knew how––by sharing a joke:
A kindergarten teacher approached a student who was working especially hard during drawing time.
The teacher asked, "What are you drawing?"
The little girl replied, "God!"
The teacher said, "But sweetheart, no one knows what God looks like."
The girl continued drawing and said, "Well, they will in a minute!"
If you follow St. Philip's on Facebook or Instagram, then you've already heard that joke (and you may have heard it even before that––it's an old one!). If you don't follow St. Philip's...why not? Take a minute now to get connected so that you will always be among the first to hear about upcoming events, schedule changes, and obscure holidays.

Almighty God, the fountain of all wisdom, who knowest our necessities before we ask and our ignorance in asking: Have compassion, we beseech thee, upon our infirmities, and those things which for our unworthiness we dare not, and for our blindness we cannot ask, mercifully give us for the worthiness of thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
