Saturday: Advent Drop-In at the Rectory

3:00–6:00 p.m. at the home of the Rev. and Mrs. Jeffrey S. Miller, 92 Church Street

All St. Philippians are cordially invited to join the Millers in their home for one of our favorite annual events full of festive fellowship and delicious food––and egg nog, of course! A golf cart shuttle will be available from the church's parking lot on the corner of Church and Cumberland Streets (about a five-minute walk from the Rectory). There is no need to bring anything but a festive spirit!

Sunday: Lessons and Carols, Wassail Bowl, and Poinsettia Delivery

Beginning at 10:30 a.m. (our 8:15 service of Holy Eucharist will go on as usual)

Anticipate the birth of our Lord and Savior by joining us for our service of Lessons and Carols, wherein God’s plan of salvation is traced in Scripture and song from the creation of the world through the wondrous incarnation of Jesus Christ at Christmas. Immediately following the service, join us in the Parish Hall for our annual Wassail Bowl reception, where you may mingle with St. Philippian friends, family, newcomers, and guests while munching on refreshments. And of course there will be plenty of hot mulled cider––otherwise known as wassail––to go around! And as you’re leaving the Wassail Bowl, please go by the downstairs entryway of the Parish House and pick up a poinsettia (or a few!) to deliver to someone who lives near you or on your route home. The poinsettias will be sorted by ZIP code and the cards will have complete addresses. Families who have lost loved ones this year are also welcome to pick up their own poinsettias.

ACNA Hymnal Commission Creates Music Resource Task Force

originally published on anglicanchurch.net on November 20, 2023

The twelve-member Hymnal Commission, which was chartered at the June 2023 Meeting of the College of Bishops, met at St. Mark’s Church in Arlington, Texas, from November 13-15. Our task was to develop a process that would produce a Hymnal for the Anglican Church in North America.

We considered the rich musical gifts of our Church, as well as the many diverse contexts and needs of the congregations our work must serve. We desired to produce a Hymnal that would bless and unify our young Province.

Deliberations on how to proceed were thoughtful, prayerful, and eventually inspired What emerged was a path forward that surprised us all.

Above: Chris Walchesky, St. Philip’s Director of Music and Organist (far right), and the Rt. Rev. Chip Edgar, Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of South Carolina (second from right), pictured here following a group dinner on November 13, are part of the 12-member Hymnal Commission-turned-Music Task Force.

Thank You, Foundations Team!

The Rev. Andrew O’Dell and the rest of the clergy of St. Philip’s would like to extend a heartfelt “thank you” to our Foundations support team! It is this delightful group and their ministry of hospitality to our students that make the class possible. We are grateful for their gift of time and service to the newcomers in our parish!

St. Philip's Drama Department

At staff meeting yesterday, Zippy Hood, director of the children's choirs, expressed how blessed she felt for the privilege of being a part of the talented St. Philip's musical team, which continues week after week to provide beautiful music that complements the lectionary readings, glorifies God, and enhances worship for parishioners.

And yet, mere hours later, she was caught on camera sneaking up on a completely unsuspecting Chris Walchesky with two very scary-looking lime green weapons.

What had caused such a drastic turn of events? A dispute over the ownership of mini-fridge contents? Fish in the microwave? A meeting that should have been an email? Perhaps we'll never know, but we do hope they can resolve whatever it is before Sunday's Lessons and Carols service!

If this is the first you're hearing of Zippy's covert mission, why don't you take a minute to give us a follow on social media so that you, too, can be among the first to hear about schedule changes, special events, and music department drama?

Sunday's Readings

Collect for the Second Sunday in Advent:

Blessed Lord, who hast caused all Holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant that we may in such wise hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that by patience and comfort of thy holy Word, we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which thou hast given us in our Savior Jesus Christ; who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

Readings for Sunday (8:15 a.m. service):

  • Isaiah 64:1-9a
  • Psalm 80:1-7
