The only way for you to know for sure is to join us! The work is light but plentiful, so we need as many hands as possible pitching in. Helpers of all ages and activity levels are encouraged to come––there's something for everyone! (There are also bigger jobs available if you’re up for it!)

Register for a Foyer Group Today!
|
|
Looking for a great way to get to know others in the St. Philip’s family? We are pleased to announce the return of Foyer Groups, monthly gatherings of about eight to ten adults––married couples or single folks, longtime members or relative newcomers––assigned randomly and meeting in each other’s homes for a simple meal and fellowship. Generally the host provides the main dish and others bring the rest of the meal (appetizer, salad, side or dessert). If you’re concerned about accommodating a group in your own home, consider co-hosting with another member of the group or having a casual backyard evening. If you are not a cook, there’s always bread and wine!
This is a social evening with a real purpose—to know one another better and build a stronger sense of community in the Body of Christ at St. Philip’s as we practice the gift of hospitality.
Please sign up at the link below today so that we can put groups together by the end of the month.

Mt. Pleasant, S.C. (October 16, 2021) Today, during a special Electing Convention held at Christ Church in Mt. Pleasant, the Very Rev. Chip Edgar was elected Bishop Coadjutor of the Anglican Diocese of South Carolina. Pending approval by the Anglican Church in North America’s College of Bishops, who will meet in January 2022, Edgar will be in line to succeed Bishop Mark Lawrence, who has served as the Diocesan Bishop since January of 2008.
“You have bestowed a trust in me and I promise I will do everything I possibly can to live into that trust,” said Edgar following the election. “I am deeply, deeply humbled.” Quoting Second Samuel, he said, “‘Who am I that you have brought me this far? And who is my family?’ I trust this is the Lord’s will for the Anglican Diocese of South Carolina and this is the Lord’s will for me and for my family ... I covet your prayers. From this point forward I covet your prayers. Thank you very much.”

St. Philip’s Clergy Team Learns Life-Saving Techniques
Parishioners Encouraged to Join Next Class
|
|
Last Thursday, members of the St. Philip’s clergy team and some staff members participated in the initial CPR/AED (automated external defibrillator) training class. Participants learned the importance of quick CPR and use of an AED in the event of a cardiac emergency. The class focuses on the American Heart Association chain of survival: recognition of a cardiac emergency, 911 call, quick CPR administration, and early use of an AED.
While there is no certification involved in this class, the skills presented, CPR and use of an AED, are of paramount importance for our church if and when a cardiac emergency presents itself. Statistics show that early CPR and AED intervention increase survivability of a cardiac emergency by a large percentage.
The next class is scheduled for Thursday, October 28, at 1:30 p.m. in room 109 (ground floor of the Parish House). Please avail yourself of this training. The more parishioners so trained will increase the safety of our congregation.
Please email Doug Ringer at ringdoug@gmail.com or phone him at (423) 827-6596 if you wish to participate. Classes will continue to be scheduled for Thursdays at 1:30 p.m. for now, but we will be working on evening or weekend options shortly.

Grandparents Connect at Generations Ministry Kick-Off Coffee
|
|
On Friday, October 15, St. Philip’s Generations Ministry kicked off the 2021-2022 season with coffee and refreshments for grandparents in the Parish Hall.
Attendees heard from Tim and Sherrie Stringer, grandparents of five and members of St. Michael’s Church. Tim has been active in men’s ministries and marriage groups, and he currently serves on the vestry and the Family Task Force. Sherrie serves on the Mission Task Force and is a member of both the altar and flower guilds.
Grandparents also heard what Generations Ministry cochairs Jane McGreevy and Lynn Dayton had planned for the year, and they spent some time in small groups and prayer.
If you missed the kick-off coffee, be sure to get on the Generations Ministry email list so you don’t miss out on another event! Contact Director of Ministry to Children and Families Dorothy Lancaster (dlancaster@stphilipschurchsc.org) to get signed up, and keep an eye on your inSPIRE for the next installment of the new monthly column about intentional grandparenting.
|
|
Contributions for grandparenting column needed!
Do you have a simple activity you enjoy with your grandchildren that you’d like to share with other grandparents? Is there a book about grandparenting or one you enjoy reading with your grandchildren that you think other grandparents might enjoy? Please share your ideas with Jane McGreevy (janemcgreevy@yahoo.com) or Lynn Dayton (lland312@gmail.com). And remember to “Name That Column” to win a book from the Generations Ministry collection!

God’s Feet and Hands at St. Philip’s
by Monti Hanger and Callie McLaurin, Compassion Committee Cochairs
|
|
The Compassion Committee of St. Philip’s, as you can imagine, had to modify its ministry of meal delivery to church members in need with the advent of the pandemic. We are so grateful for the enthusiastic willingness of Connie Stahl to make and deliver meals throughout these times of isolation. We couldn’t have done it without her ( 36 in 2020 and 71 thus far in 2021).
Now with the church opening up for us all, we will return to requesting meals from our responsive committee volunteers. We will depend on this awesome 80-member team that was in place at the beginning of 2020, but we’d also like to let all know we can always use more helping hands! If you can make and deliver one meal a year, this committee is for you. Once Callie and I have identified that a meal would be helpful for a church member, an email is sent out asking for a volunteer, and we usually get a response in seconds!
Please call the church office at (843) 722-7734 if you would like to have your name added to our roster of volunteers.

Happy Anniversary, Juli Garland!
|
|
The clergy and staff of St. Philip's Church enjoyed a very special treat following yesterday's staff meeting: warm, gooey, delicious, homemade cinnamon rolls! The occasion was the 20th anniversary of financial administrator Juli Garland’s arrival on the St. Philip’s scene, and the talented baker was the lady of the hour herself!
We're not sure why we were the ones treated on her special day, but we didn't question it! We gobbled up those cinnamon rolls like it was our job.
Some of our questions about Juli's time at the office have gone unanswered (how did her office become the orchid hospital? how many pounds of chocolate get picked out of her candy dishes in a year? is she sponsored by Blackberry?), and we all have different guesses about which years have been her favorite (we mostly guess the glory years began whichever year we ourselves joined the staff), but one thing's for sure: those cinnamon rolls were gooooooooooood. We're so thankful for our Juli and happy that she's had a wonderful 20 years at St. Philip's (and that she chooses to express her happiness in such a delicious way)!
If you follow St. Philip's on social media, you already knew about Juli's anniversary. But if this is news to you, why don't you take a minute to click the buttons below and follow us right now so that you, too, can be among the first to hear stories like this?
